THE GREENESTOF ALLAccurate Dorwin windows are

easy on the environment with

more LEED (Leadership in

Energy and Design) focused

architects and builders turning

to fiberglass windows than any

other style. Unlike some

products, Accurate Dorwin

fiberglass windows are made

tough and last longer than

others in the industry. This

means fewer old windows lying

around in landfills. Even the

manufacturing process is a

step ahead with systems using

less energy to create the

company’s innovative frame

material. Altogether, Accurate

Dorwin windows are among

the greenest ways to view the

outdoors, an attribute that

comes with the assurance of

testing by the National

Fenestration Rating Council.

1959Accurate Dorwin Co. (Dorwin Industries), aleader in the fenestration industry has beenin the business of making the finest qualityand highest energy rated windows anddoors since 1952. Well established in CentralCanada, Accurate Dorwin Co. is dedicatedto providing exceptional customer service toall residential and commercial customersthroughout North America.

1983In 1983, Dorwin Industries of Winnipegintroduced the first fiberglass window to theworld. The idea evolved from a simpleconcept of using a composite material thatis thermally superior to steel, wood, vinylaluminum, and other materials. It was arevolutionary idea that proved to be achallenge. Nothing existed to fabricate therequired window profiles. As a result, DorwinIndustries developed a new manufacturingprocess now known as “pultrusion”.Pultrusion involves saturating parallel strandsof glass fibers with resin and pulling it througha heated die. The result is a pultrudedfiberglass profile. • Fiberglass is paintable, stronger than vinyl,

more weather-resistant than wood, andless thermally conductive than steel andaluminum.

• It has a low thermal expansion andcontraction coefficient similar to glassmaking it the ideal frame for most highperformance IG units.

• Fiberglass is a strong frame material idealto handle heavier dualpane and tripaneIG units.

• Fiberglass frame system has narrowersightlines offering a higher ratio of glassarea (daylight) to frame area than mostconventional frame materials.

Dorwin Industries pioneered and developeda system that combines the mostdimensionally stable window frame materialwith foam insulation and high performanceIG units. This system is what Accurate DorwinCo. now proudly calls, “The FiberglassAdvantage”.

2006Philosophy“A Company That Service Built”With over 60 years experience and areputation for offering the best product,Accurate Dorwin backs every product soldwith the very best customer service.Customer satisfaction is a priority andAccurate Dorwin is committed to deliveringthe very best service. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF FIBERGLASS WINDOWS

The environmental impacts of windows were studied as part of the design process for the

Waterloo Region Green Home. There were eight environmental factors that were considered

when the decision was made to install windows with pultruded fiberglass frames and a high

efficiency glazing system. A comparison to aluminum-clad and vinyl-high performance windows

was made.

Materials UsedFiberglass for window frames is made of 65 to85% glass fibers and 15 to 35% resin. Silicasand is melted and spun into the glass fibers. The resin is thermoset polyester, which is apetroleum-based alkyd containing styrene, glycols and acids. The insulation in theframes is expanded polystyrene. Thepultruded lineals were produced byOmniglass of Winnipeg using fiberglass andresin from Owens Corning. The windows weremanufactured and assembled by AccurateDorwin of Winnipeg. The high-performanceglazing units consisted of three panes ofglass with LOF Energy Advantage Low-Ecoatings on surfaces 2 and 5, low-conductivity silicone Super Spacer fromEdgetech and two argon gas fills.Aluminum-clad wood framed windowsrequire aluminum sheeting and high qualityclear lumber. Some finger-jointed lumber isused in interior components that are notvisible once the window is installed. Vinylwindows are made from polyvinyl chlorideand often contain steel reinforcement.

Resource DepletionThe raw material reserves for silica sand arevery large at present and are not expectedto be exhausted. Quality control concerns inthe production of glass fiber presentlypreclude the use of recycled fiber andwaste is not recycled into the processthough these options are being investigated.In-plant waste resins for fiber glass are re-used and re-blended. The raw materialreserves are based on the limits of petroleumproducts. The amount of petroleum isrelatively small and contributes to a durableproduct that has a long life and energyefficiency not available from other materials. The polystyrene insulation is a petroleumproduct and as mentioned above, has

reserves based on the limits of petroleum.Again, a durable insulation is produced thathas advantages in energy use reductionduring the life of the window compared toother products. Vinyl windows require a largequantity of polyvinyl chloride resins which usepetroleum as feed stock. Wood windowsrequire clear heartwood for visiblecomponents placing a strain on old growthforests.

Emissions During ManufactureGlass fiber production is said to be a closedprocess with few emissions escaping into theenvironment. Resin manufacture is also saidto be a closed process with very fewemissions in the environment. There is achemical risk from the resins but it is less thanthat of PVC production. Expandedpolystyrene is not produced in a closedprocess and some of the pentane blowingagent and other volatile compounds areable to escape. The production of PVC releases petroleumby product into the atmosphere. Theproduction of aluminum releases two fluorinegasses with potent greenhouse warmingpotential.

Embodied EnergyThe energy intensity (18 MJ/kg) of fiberglass islower than that of PVC (26 MJ/kg). Fiberglassframes are slightly heavier than vinyl buthave a lower embodied energy. Woodwindows have a lower embodied energybut aluminum cladding increases energyrequirements significantly. All of the components for fiberglass windowsare manufactured in North America so thattransportation energy is relatively low asshipping distances are short. Fiberglasswindow frames are extremely durable andare expected to last the life of the house. This

Page 6: Think FIBERGLASSFirst For Windows That Last! ASSESSMENT OF FIBERGLASS WINDOWS The environmental impacts of windows were studied as part of the design process for the Waterloo Region

means that embodied energy must only bedealt with once rather than several times, aswould be the case if the windows requiredreplacement (as would probably occur withother materials).

Energy Used During the Life of the WindowsThe space heating energy consumed as aresult of the windows is much greater thanthe energy required to construct thewindows. With fiberglass windows, the space heatingenergy is actually an energy gain onaverage. The Accurate Dorwin windowsused at the Green Home have an energyrating (ER) of 48 for the operable versions. This means that averaged over the fourcardinal directions and across the Canadianclimate, they gain 7.2 watts per squaremeter of window over the heating season.Accurate Dorwin Windows are listed for theOntario Hydro incentive program that havea positive energy rating for an operablemodel.

A standard double-glazed wood windowhas an energy rating of -33 W/m2. Thehighest triple-glazed wood window rating is -5 W/m2. Vinyl windows have similar ratings aswood.

Ozone DepletionThere are no ozone-depleting chemicalsused in the manufacture of the fiberglasswindows. The expanded polystyrenehowever, uses pentane (approximately 7%by volume) as a blowing agent (agreenhouse gas).

Environment Emissions During the Life of the ProductPolyesters and keytones will off-gas for sometime after fiberglass is manufactured. Thepainted finish on the surface of the frames ishowever expected to reduce the rate ofemission. Vinyl windows and to a lesserextent, wood windows, also have emissions.

SummaryTable 1 summarizes how the three window frame materials compare in addressing the eightenvironmental issues. Energy use was considered to be the most important environmental factor. From this analysis, it was found that fiberglass windows have the lowest overall environmentalimpact. The energy efficiency and long life of fiberglass windows significantly reduces the needfor purchased energy, which means that their impacts on resource depletion and embodiedenergy are also limited. The high energy use and to a lesser extent the emissions duringproduction of aluminum-clad, wood and vinyl windows were the principal factors working againstthese products.Enermodal Engineering Limited

The Fiberglass Advantage

Strength – Pultruded Fiberglass is the strongest of all window materials. Fiberglass is eight timesstronger than PVC, over three times stronger than wood composites and 20% stronger thanaluminium.

Stability – Pultruded fiberglass frames exhibit minimal expansion and contraction in extremetemperature changes when compared to other window frame materials. Fiberglass and glasshave similar rates of expansion and contraction which results in superior weather sealperformance over a wide range of seasonal temperatures changes, smooth window operationand consistent alignment of the sash and frame. As a comparison PVC expands and contractsat a rate eight times of glass.

Energy Efficiency – Pultruded Fiberglass window frames have a much lower thermalconductivity than other materials such as aluminium. This combined with insulated frames andsashes results in some of the most energy efficient windows in the world.

Durability – Pultruded fiberglass window frames will not bend, warp, crack, dent, rust orcorrode. Fiberglass will not corrode in coastal applications as it is impervious to saltwater.

Environmentally Friendly – Pultruded Fiberglass window frames combined with highefficiency insulating glass can help reduce the world’s energy consumption. Fiberglass is madefrom silica sand an abundant natural resource. There is less embodied energy in fiberglass ascompared to PVC which requires gas and petrol-chemicals. Aluminium requires large amounts ofelectricity and natural gas to produce and wood consumes large amounts of slow growing trees.
