How to Ensure Success for
Non-IT Stakeholders

PTT: Productivity Through Technology

Success is NOT a spectator sport
Handshakes, not Handoffs One Team,
One Goal
People, Process, and
Technology
Winning the
Hearts and Minds
Calm is Contagious
• Start with Why?
– Why does this matter to an end user’s “day job”? Why does it matter
more to some?
• As a leader and partner, be the one to listen
• You have influence!
– Leaders make decision based on information in front of them and
incomplete information
– Leaders want you to have a voice that aggregates perspectives and
priorities from all affected parties
Doing IT With, Not To
8
• Formal, written, time bound requirements and expectations – from
actual end users
– Business sign off is critical for engagement and “owning it”
– IT teams aren’t those that sign off on deliverables, end users sign off
• Education Required
• Engagement every day Required
• Show small progress steps via current process
– Don’t come in to change all processes and declare all existing things
“dumb”, “clugy” or “archaic”
– Do show small wins and true caring for the experience of people affected
by change
• “DRAFT” slides to communicate project parameters can be your friend
End Users decide success criteria
9
• All Channels – in-person, visual onsite, large phone conferences, small group sessions with influencers
– The time spent in relationship development will provide both awareness of what stakeholders care about and pave the way to trusting working relationships
– End result – faster, better and more relevant results
• Perform Mock/Dry Runs for end users and participants in big changes
– Role Play – do actual choreographed run-throughs with stakeholders
– Practice exactly how you will Perform
• Do NOT assign tasks to teams or individuals or assume compatibility with existing functions unless they expressly accept them via in-person conversation
Over Communicate: Early and Often
10
• As Leaders – first, we criticize ourselves fearlessly and with
vulnerability
• Let go of being right and perfect early on in favor of eventual (time-
boxed) success
• Don’t let a good crisis go to waste
