Research Highlights
Research Highlights
• As a result of the launch of the Affordable Care Act, significantly more Hispanic and non-Hispanic adults reported having healthcare coverage in May 2014 compared to November 2013 (open enrollment for 2014 ran from October ‘13 – March ‘14).
• For Hispanics, the increase was clearly driven by the Least Acculturated who in November ’13 had by far the lowest health insurance coverage compared to Biculturals and the Most Acculturated. As of May ‘14, the proportion of the Least Acculturated with healthcare coverage is now even with the other two segments (approx. 8-in-10).
• Among Hispanics, much of the increase came from the purchase of individual health insurance plans. Among non-Hispanics, more are taking advantage of employer-based coverage.
• Hispanics report higher levels of approval of the ACA compared to non-Hispanics. The Least Acculturated, are the most likely to approve of the law.
• In general, Hispanics report a greater understanding of the health insurance exchanges that are applicable in their state compared to late 2013. More are also aware of the penalties for not enrolling.
