Third Grade fun with math word problems! Word Problem Mania!

HOW do we complete a word problem?Think about CBS but this time were not watching TV! We are solving word problems!

C: Circle the important numbers.B: Box in the question.S: Solve & label the word problem!

Lets try an example together!Tyler finds 38 golf balls around his house. He also finds 46 golf balls along the golf course. (Did you know that Tyler is SUCH a great golfer?) How many golf balls does Tyler find in all?

Great work!

How about we do one more as a class?

Here we go The Bridge family takes 9 tents when they go camping. The Bartlett family takes 7 tents, and the McHugh family takes 5 tents. How many tents do they take in all?

Great work!

Look at #1 on your paper. You are going to solve this one on your own now!

I will pull up the screen and do this problem with you after everyone has tried it! Alyssa jumped 11 times. Nora jumped 15 times. How many times did they jump altogether?

Here is our answer! Number model: 11 + 15 = 26

Answer: 26 times

Way to go!

Now try #2!

We will check it together after everyone is finished. Set your pencil down after you have solved it so I know you are ready! Riley kicked a soccer ball 102 times. Xariyan kicked a soccer ball 94 times. How many more times did Riley kick the soccer ball than Xariyan?

Here is our answer! Number model: 102 - 94 = 8

Answer: 8 more times

Woohoo!

Now try #3!

We will check it together after everyone is finished. Set your pencil down after you have solved it so I know you are ready! Bianca had 25 pencils. Emily had 75 pencils. What is the total number of pencils that they had?

Here is our answer! Number model: 25 + 75 = 100

Answer: 100 pencils

Lets do one more!

Try #4!

We will check it together after everyone is finished. Set your pencil down after you have solved it so I know you are ready! Konnor and Elijah read 10 more books than Luke. Luke read 49 books. How many books did Konnor and Elijah read?

Here is our answer! Number model: 49 + 10 = 59

Answer: 59 books

Amazing job!

Now are you ready for a REAL challenge?

Lets review our CBS rules:C: Circle the important numbers.B: Box in the question.S: Solve & label the word problem!

This time there will be MORE than one step in the word problem! You will have to take your time and think really hard to solve these tricky math word problems!

This time, when we dont know part of the word problem we will represent what we dont know with a letter! This is called ALGEBRA! (You are SO grown up to be doing algebra already. Your teachers didnt learn algebra until they were in middle school!)

Here is an example:

42 + 13 3 = x

or

62 + 37 41 = a

Lets try an example together!Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with?(These problems have more than one step we might have to add AND subtract in some of them! Yikes!)

C: Circle the important numbers.Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with?

B: Box in the question.Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with?

S: Solve & label the word problem.Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with?Remember that we need to use a letter to represent the information that we dont know yet! 56 + 76 17 = bNumber model:

S: Solve & label the word problem.Kendyl had 56 balloons. She blew up 76 more balloons. Then 17 popped. How many balloons is Kendyl left with?Now we can solve for the letter b! 56 + 76 17 = bNumber model:Answer: 56 + 76 17 = 115 balloons

Fabulous!

How about we do one more as a class?

Here we go!Evan has a large collection of books. He gave his best friend 14 books and his brother 7 books. Now Evan has 60 books. How many books did he start with?

How many books did he start with?Remember that we need to use a letter to represent the information that we dont know yet! Number model:60 + 7 + 14 = n

Great work!

Look at #1 on your paper. You are going to solve this one on your own now!

I will pull up the screen and do this problem with you after everyone has tried it! Ronan had 10 Snickers bars. Michael gave him some Hershey bars and 20 Crunch bars. Ronan now has 42 candy bars total. How many Hershey bars did Michael give Ronan?

Here is our answer! Number model: 10 + h + 20 = 42

Answer: 12 Hersheys bars

Way to go!

Now try #2!

We will check it together after everyone is finished. Set your pencil down after you have solved it so I know you are ready! Madi had 6 toys. Kelsey brought her 8 more, but Makenzie borrowed 3. How many toys does Madi have now?

Here is our answer! Number model: 6 + 8 3 = t

Answer: 11 toys

Woohoo!

Now try #3!

We will check it together after everyone is finished. Set your pencil down after you have solved it so I know you are ready! Hannah Montana had 38 fancy shirts. She bought 13 more. Then Justin Bieber stole some! She has 31 shirts left. How many shirts did Justin Bieber steal?

Here is our answer! Number model: 38 + 13 s = 31

Answer: 20 shirts

Lets do one more!

Try #4!

We will check it together after everyone is finished. Set your pencil down after you have solved it so I know you are ready! Mrs. McHugh bought 3 hot dogs. Mrs. Bartlett bought 400 more. Then Mr. Bridge ate some of them. They only had 303 left. How many hot dogs did Mr. Bridge eat?

Here is our answer! Number model: 3 + 400 h = 303

Answer: 100 hot dogs

You did a great job and now you can go home and say that you can do algebra! You smartie, you! AMAZING WORK!
