Dear Friends, In St. John's Gospel, chapter 17 we hear one of the most profound passages in the Holy Scriptures. The Lord Jesus' pub-lic ministry is coming to a close, he will soon be betrayed, arrested, and crucified. Before this happens he prays to the Father for himself, his disciples, and those who will come to believe through them, the Church (that's us!). In vs. 22 he prays that we--his followers-- "may be one" as he, the Father, and the Holy Spirit are one. We as followers of Christ have often failed to live this vocation of unity in the Christian family. Each January, Christians around the world observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This year the week began last Wednesday, Jan. 18 and concludes this coming Wednesday, Jan. 25. This is a time to pray for, reflect on, and re-commit ourselves to reconciliation and unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ. The proper prayer in the Mass For the Unity of Christians expresses it well: We humbly ask you, Lord, lover of the human family, to pour out more fully upon us the grace of your Spirit, and grant that, walking worthily in the vocation to which you have called us, we may bear witness to the truth before others and seek with confidence the unity of all believers in the bond of peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen [Roman Missal, 17. For the Unity of Christians] May we and all of our brothers and sisters live and bear witness to this holy and grace-filled unity in our lives and com-munities. In Christ, Fr. Tom

Queridos amigos,

P. Tom

God of all, we pray as one, that we may be one, just as the Lord Jesus prayed we may be one in Him. Your son Jesus compels us to be reconciled to one another. May our spirits be joined to your Holy Spirit, that we may wit-

ness to the visible unity of your Church. May we all recognize that we are truly one with you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and grow

together in peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Quote of the Week

“Each one therefore ought to be more radically converted to the Gospel and, without ever losing sight of God's plan, change his or her way of looking at things. Thanks to ecumenism, our contem-plation of "the mighty works of God" (mirabilia Dei) has been enriched by new horizons, for which the Triune God calls us to give thanks: the knowledge that the Spirit is at work in other Christian Communities, the discovery of examples of holiness, the experience of the immense riches present in the communion of saints, and contact with unexpected dimensions of Christian commitment. In a corresponding way, there is an increased sense of the need for repentance: an awareness of certain exclusions which seriously harm fraternal charity, of certain refusals to for-give, of a certain pride, of an unevangelical insistence on con-demning the "other side", of a disdain born of an unhealthy pre-sumption. Thus, the entire life of Christians is marked by a con-cern for ecumenism; and they are called to let themselves be shaped, as it were, by that concern.” -St. John Paul II, Ut unum sint 15 -Bl. Paul VI, Evangelii nuntiandi, 20-21

Q. What is ecumenism (ek-yoo-men-ism)?

A: Ecumenism is working for the restoration of unity between Christian communities and Churches. This is something we are all called to do. Some of these divisions are about real substan-tive issues. Many are built on misunderstandings. The most important way that ecumenism is practice (second only to pray-er) is through our living a good Christian life– giving an exam-ple to our separated brothers and sisters, and being willing to learn from their example. We can serve together, we can pray together, we can study the Scriptures together. Building rela-tionships in this way allows us to overcome false divisions that are based on misunderstanding, and get down to the work of dialoguing about the real things that divide us. It is also im-portant for Catholics to know their faith. There is a lot of pseudo-knowledge and misinformation out there about Catholic teaching. You may be the only person in someone’s life who can set the record straight! If you don’t know your faith, you can’t talk with other people about it (and you yourself could be misled in the process)! As Catholics we believe that everyone who celebrates Trinitari-an baptism with water is a true Christian. They are truly our brothers and sisters. And we recognize that Christ desired total unity for His Church so that it could be an effective witness in the world. We should especially ask for forgiveness for the ways in which we have put a bad face on the Church and Cath-olics by our own sinfulness, and for the ways we have taken God’s gifts to us in the Church for granted, especially the Eu-charist.
