TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — The burdens that were once laid upon the people have been vanquished (Isaiah 8:23 — 9:3). Psalm — The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Paul exhorts the believers at Corinth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divisions among you. (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17). Gospel — After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Galilee teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and curing the people (Matthew 4:12-23 [12-17]).

Question for Children: How do you hear Jesus calling you to do what he wants you to? Question for Adults: How does Jesus call you to assist in his ministry: the building up of the Reign of God? How do you know what God wants of you in this regard?

LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an atlas to deter-mine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is pro-phetic of Jesus’ future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that de-velops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissen-sion, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in to-day’s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the king-dom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

Treasures from our Tradition Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe

It’s still months away, but parish ministers, especially if they are involved in the catechumenate, have their eyes on Lent and the Easter Triduum. Until fairly recent times, the last few days before Easter were shaped by an aware-ness of the Passion, but the faithful were left to their own devices about how to engage with these mysteries. A thousand years ago, the Easter Vigil as a solemn and cen-tral moment of initiation had vanished. By the early 1950s it was a minor moment in parish life, celebrated on Holy Saturday morning, usually with only the priests and a handful of invited guests. Most people understood it as necessary only for blessing the paschal candle and prepar-ing the Easter water. People who were children during World War II sometimes remember that the weekly noon-time test of the air-raid sirens on Holy Saturday signaled the end of Lent. Today, of course, we see Holy Saturday as entirely within the paschal fast, and hardly the time for children to be tearing through the plastic grass looking for jelly beans and chocolate eggs. These memories point to a total col-lapse of the once-central liturgies of the Christian year. This impoverishment of the liturgy was mostly an acci-dent of history. The root cause was the loss of Lent as a time focused on the final formation of catechumens for the Easter sacraments. By 1880, scholars began to piece together a vision of what once had been, and slowly, at first in a handful of monasteries in Europe, pieces of the tradition were rediscovered and celebrated.

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

Thursday, February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. An old English name for this day is Candlemas. This feast celebrates the fortieth day after

Christmas. The symbol of forty days is the reason for the feast’s traditional importance and for the practice of blessing candles for use in churches and homes. Christ-mas the light came into the world; Epiphany it rose to shine like a star; Candlemas the light is placed in our arms and like old Simeon, we embrace heaven’s eternal youth.

CANDLELIGHT MASS PRESENTATION OF THE LORD,

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2 at 7:00 PM There will be a special Candlelight Mass and procession to celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas) on this day. Mass will begin at 7:00 p.m. Candles for your devotional use at home will be blessed at this mass. Candles will be available to purchase prior to Mass as well as in the Religious Goods Room after all Sunday Masses.

SAINT BLAISE, BISHOP AND MARTYR, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd

In memory of Saint Blaise, the blessing of throats will be given at the 8:30 a.m. Mass.

Statement on the death of Archbishop Patrick Flores, Emeritus Archbishop of San Antonio

My good friend and mentor, Archbishop Patrick Flo-res, passed away today at the age of 87. I received the news with personal sadness but also with a sense of joy that he is now enjoying the presence of our loving God. Archbishop Flores lived a long and good life and through his priesthood and ministry he touched many people with his love for life and his love for Jesus Christ. He was a beautiful example for me of a priest and a bishop. I will always be grateful for his generosity and kindness to me. It was an honor to follow him as Archbishop of San Anto-nio, which I did when he retired in 2004. As the first Hispanic bishop appointed in this country since the time of the early missionaries, Archbishop Flores was a pioneer and role model not only for me but also for a generation of Hispanic priests and Latino leaders. He knew the struggles of Hispanics in this country, and he was a friend to the farm workers and a voice of conscience for dignity and human rights. He taught all of us to celebrate our heritage and tra-ditions and encouraged us to share our faith and val-ues proudly and to become leaders in our communi-ties. I will miss him. I ask Our Lady of Guadalupe to draw him close in her maternal tenderness.

DID YOU KNOW? Speak up with concerns about a child’s environment. Parent and caregiver observations can help protect a child in danger, and you should know when it’s important to speak up. Although it may be awk-ward to approach a parent you do not know, if you have witnessed a scenario where the child is in danger of physical or mental abuse, it is your responsibility to act in that child’s best interest. In addition to reporting con-cerns, think about any practical solutions that can help keep kids safe pending an investigation and solution. For a copy of the VIRTUS© arti-cle “Voicing Concerns About a Child’s Environment,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

¿SABIA USTED?
