Matthew 11:2-11

MT 14:22-33

MT 13:24-43

TODAY’S GOSPEL Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although

Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK

Today’s reading from Isaiah continues the message of renewal and hope we heard last week. Isaiah speaks words of hope and comfort, possibly to those exiled in Babylon. They are weak but he speaks words of strength and encouragement to them, “Be strong, do not fear!” (v.4) Their God comes to deliver them. “The ransomed of the Lord shall return, and enter Zion singing” (v.10). These words provide hope for a broken people. Returning to Jerusalem they will rebuild their city and its temple and once again “see the glory of the Lord” (v.2).

the glory of the Lord” (v.2). Over the years the early church came to realize that Jesus wasn’t coming back as soon as they anticipated. James writes to encourage them to be patient. Things happen in God’s time, not ours. While we wait we are called to persevere in faith, knowing that just as planting seeds leads to a harvest so too our faith will eventually be rewarded. James reminds them of the prophets who suffered patiently and never lost faith in God. In today’s gospel we hear that John the Baptist, while in prison, sends his disciples to question Jesus about his identity, “Are you the one who is to come?” (11:3). Jesus’ response invites them to report back to John “what you hear and see” (v.4). Jesus’ ministry to the blind, the lame, lepers, the deaf and the dead is an indication that he is God’s servant, spoken of by the prophets. He has also come to announce the good news of the gospel. John had earlier proclaimed that, “the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (3:2). For Reflection: Do I draw strength from God’s promises? How can my life contribute to continuing Jesus’ ministry to others?

BLESSING OF THE ADVENT WREATH BENDICIÓN DE LA CORONA DE ADVIENTO

NEW MEN’S AND LADIES REST ROOMS IN THE PARISH HALL

Father Almighty, as we prepare to celebrate the coming of the Incarnate Word promised by the prophets of long ago, may we await Him with the hope for a world free from hatred and division, a world replete with your love.

Father, we pray that the lights from the Advent wreath will remind us of the Light of the World who chases the darkness from our hearts. Help us to open our hearts, our homes and our family to your peace. And, with such peace, may we act as modern-day prophets, reminding ourselves and encouraging others to “Prepare the way of the Lord!” Amen.

Amen.
