Father Gary Writes

I would like to begin by welcoming Father Bernard Nemorin to our parish family. Father Bernard is a University Professor in Haiti, and the Director of the St. Vincent de Paul Retreat and Conference Center, near our twin parish in Acul des Pins. This is where we stay and host the children’s summer camps. He will be with us until Wednesday. If any of our high school teens (grades 11 and 12) or college students would like to come on our Mission Trip in 2018 (June 18

th – 25

th), please contact Sarah Davis at the Faith

Formation Office: 727-733-0872. Pope Francis invites young people from across the globe (grades 11, 12, college students, young adults up to the age of 25) to join him in Panama for World Youth Day in 2019, January 20

th – 28

th. The cost is$2700 (includes air transporta-

tion, flights, food and excursions, e.g. to the Panama Canal). Again, if you would like to go on both or either trip, or receive further information, please contact Sarah at the number listed above. Both trips (Haiti and Panama) promise to be life changing experiences!

Next weekend may prove to be somewhat confusing as the Fourth Sunday of Advent is celebrated at the Saturday Vigil Mass and Sunday morning, and on Sunday afternoon we begin the Christmas festival! I would suggest as many of you as possible attend the Vigil on Saturday, December 23

rd at 5pm to celebrate the

conclusion of Advent, and for those who can’t, the Sunday obligation can obviously be fulfilled at the morning Masses: 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30. This is an opportunity to grow in holiness as a family of faith! The Christmas Masses begin on Sunday, December 24

th at 5pm,

followed by the 7pm and Midnight Mass (preceded by carols and music at 11pm). On Christmas Day, Monday, December 25

th,

Mass is celebrated at 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30. The parish office is open until lunchtime on Thursday, December 21

st. Yes, it’s the most

wonderful time of the year!

A couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to the now Blessed Father Solanus Casey, who was Beatified (the stage before Canonization) in Detroit at Fort Field on November 18

th. He was a Franciscan priest

of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. He was born in Wisconsin, the sixth of sixteen children born to Bernard and Elizabeth Casey on November 25

th, 1870. Witnessing a brutal murder led him to evaluate

his life and his future. He then acted on a call he felt to the priest-hood. He applied to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee but was advised that – due to his academic limitations – he should consider a religious order if he wanted to become a priest. While praying before a statue of Mother Mary, he felt a call to Detroit where he applied to join the Franciscans, which he did on January 14

th, 1897. He was

given the name ‘Solanus,’ after St. Francis Solanus, because both men shared a love for the violin. He was ordained a priest on July 24

th, 1904. He was recognized as an inspiring speaker, and known

for his great faith, and his attention to the sick and vulnerable of Detroit. He radiated the compassion and love of Christ.

LIFE TEEN RETREAT January 19-21, 2018

God has a history of making order out of chaos. Jesus also took breaks from chaos. A retreat is a break from the norm, an act of with-drawing. This retreat leads us out of the chaos and distractions of daily life and into a relationship with God who can transform chaos into something beautiful. This retreat is open to all high

school teens. Confirmation candidates are required to attend. We will depart for the retreat at 5:00pm on Friday, the 19th and return for the 5:00 Life Teen Mass on Sunday, the 21st. The cost is $80 which includes lodging, meals, and transportation.

FORMED FEATURE OF THE WEEK This extraordinary film explores the heroic life of a remarkable, modern-day mystic, Father Solanus Casey, who was relegated to doing little more than being a simple doorman in his monastery. But God would transform the role his superiors assigned him, appointing it a far greater significance to be continued even be-yond his earthly life: that of prophet, healer, and intercessor. Known as a wonder-worker and a powerful instrument of divine healing and hope, he touched countless lives. His untiring atten-tion to the sick and poor, combined with his prayers, wise counsel, and burning faith brought an unprecedented outpouring of grief at his death in 1957. More than twenty thou-sand people attended the funeral of this self-less American-born priest.

As a part of his canonization process, the exhu-mation of his body in 1987 revealed him to be "remarkably intact, and well preserved," seem-ingly defying corruption. A gripping story of this priest's faith in God's goodness unfolds through interviews with his friends, colleagues, eyewit-nesses, biographers, and direct recipients of his healing and prophecy. Rare, never-before-seen film footage and historical photographs are included with actual footage from the exhu-mation of this exemplary Servant of God. Check out more features at www.formed.org! A COMMUNITY OF FAITH, KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICE

THIRD GRADE with Ms. Kathleen Flanagan

The students in our third grade class began this school year on a positive note----quite literally! Our class is participating in a pilot program of violin instruction conducted by our principal, Dr. Penny, and our music teacher, Mrs. Wong-Stark. The third graders have risen to this new challenge beautifully. They have already performed at school liturgies, Sunday Masses, Mease Manor, and the Barnes & Noble Book Fair. In addition to their violin classes, the students have made strides in science, social studies, religion, math, and language arts. What do readers have in common with detectives? How can reading help you become a stronger writer? What are the ingredients of a powerful paragraph? These are just a few of the essential questions our third graders have been exploring in language arts so far this year.

During reading instruction, we put on our detective hats, searching for clues to better comprehend fiction and non-fiction texts. The third graders also love to gather togeth-er to hear books by accomplished children’s authors read aloud to them. We call these special books “mentor texts” because they can

teach us so much about a writer’s craft.

As part of our daily reading/writing period, the students participate in a program called the Literacy Café. They rotate through activities such as Word Work, Work on Writing, and Read to Self/Read with Someone. They also spend time with the teacher in guided small group instruction. We have learned that you can “cook up” a powerful paragraphs using the right ingredients---main ideas, supporting details, and effective conclusions. The students enjoy the “restaurant” theme of the Literacy Café. Tasks are written on “menu” boards. When it’s time to switch activities we say, “Move to your next course.” Students gather with the teacher in an area called the “kitchen”. Here are a few of the third graders’ thoughts on their experience:

“I like the Literacy Café because we read and write.” -Nia Kling

“I like the Literacy Café because you can move to different activities.” -Jayden Ortiz

“I like that you can do activities that involve school and can make school fun.” -Isabelle Dyer

“I like the Literacy Café because we work as a team.” -Manuel Perez

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

OUR 2017 APA GOAL HAS BEEN REACHED!

Please Remember to Honor Your Pledge

We have reached our goal amount of $242,569! To date we have received $247,100 in pledges from 663 families. We have exceeded our goal, which means the excess of

actual donations comes back to our parish! At this time, we are $5,433 short of our pledges being fulfilled. Please help us fulfill our APA commitment by fulfilling your pledge. Thank you for being so caring and generous! You may fulfill your pledge online by visiting our website at www.ourladydunedin.org.

Smartphone users can now text their donation. Text an amount with the letters “APA” to (727) 312-1030. Call the parish office at (727) 733-3606 for assistance.

Thank you for

CHANGING LIVES

through the Annual Pastoral Appeal

NEW! TEXT TO GIVE We are keeping up with technolo-gy! With 97% of smartphone users texting at least once a day, our parish has decided to add the option to give via text. You can text an amount to (727) 312-1030,

and your transaction will be processed through the Online Giving account associated with the phone number. If your phone number is not recognized, you can continue without an account, associate your number with an existing account, or create an account. Your donation will be applied to the offer-tory collection by default. If you would like to donate to the Annual Pastoral Appeal, add the letters “APA” to the amount. Please call Robert at the parish office if you need assistance or for more information at 733-3606.

A SIMPLER CHRISTMAS Forget the “ideal” Christmas complete with snow, carols, angelically-behaved children, and the perfect presents, food, and decorations. Put the emphasis on Jesus. If there is a Christmas chore or activity that you hate, either stop doing it or stop complaining. If you still do it and you still

complain, don’t expect sympathy! If you dread writing and mailing Christmas cards, don’t bother. If you want to greet people in a simpler way, use Internet sites such as catholicgreetings.org and send e-cards with a few clicks of your mouse. If you are hosting a Christmas dinner for family and friends, don’t do everything yourself. Tell the people living with you they can all pitch in—assign tasks if necessary—and ask guests to bring their favorite dish. Don’t spend what you don’t have. Set a dollar limit and stick to it. Consider a family gift exchange, or donate to a favorite charity in honor of friends and family. Place gifts under a parish or community giving tree. Give coupons representing your gifts of time and talent to those you love. Buy gifts that are faith-related from your parish bookstore. Create your own traditions: make a Christmas nativity scene; light Christmas candles; go with the family to Midnight Mass; read the Christmas stories out loud (in Matthew 1 and 2 and Luke 1 and 2); help serve dinner in a shelter. Don’t expect too much from others. Don’t expect them to be in a certain mood or to behave in certain ways, or to give you the right gifts. Don’t do any-thing to excess: gift-giving, partying, drinking, eating. Don’t fight with family, particularly over who does or does not go to church; don’t bring up old grudges.

Living Stewardship Now Find time to prepare your own heart for Christmas. Pray more, go to confession, read the scriptures, attend Mass. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS! Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18

Music is such an important part of our waiting, isn’t it? When we hear the music of Advent and Christmas, joy moves through every part of us, from our ears down to our toes.

We sing, we play and we listen. During these weeks, the music surrounds us. What do the words of all of these songs say? Perhaps your family likes to share their fa-vorites and talk about what they tell us about Jesus. We can be glad because the music that surrounds us is a hint of what is to come. It’s as if the whole world is finally rejoicing together, and all because of Jesus.

GAUDETE SUNDAY The Third Sunday of Advent has a different liturgical color than the rest of Advent. The third candle in the Advent wreath, as well as the liturgical vestments, are usually rose-colored to emphasize our joyful expectation of the Lord’s coming. The name comes from Gregorian chant introit to the Mass: “Gaudete in Domino semper; iterim dico”: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice!
