PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners and Friends, I would like to thank the members of the Parish Buildings and Grounds Committee for meeting on Thursday, July 12th, when the initial report on our four facilities was presented by the Archdiocese’s engineering firm, Aramark. The initial report is 150 pages and gives some much-needed insight into the state of our electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling, ventilation, and fire protection systems. The Buildings and Grounds Committee had a chance to preview parts of the report before the presentation, was able to ask questions, and is offering comments this week so that the report can be finalized. This report will allow us as a parish to, in the coming years, properly plan for necessary upgrades and replacements to these various systems. As I am away, I leave you with the lives of the Saints for the coming week taken from LTP’s Sourcebook. On Monday we honor Saint Bridget. Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373), a wife and mother of eight children, joined a Cistercian monastery after the death of her husband. After a series of visions, she founded the Bridgettine Order, a double monastery for men and women living in separate enclosures, dedicated to learning. In another vision, she was instructed to heal the schism of the Avignon papacy by warning Pope Clement VI to return to Rome from Avignon. She was not canonized for her many and varied visions and revelations she believed herself to have had, but for her heroic virtue. On Tuesday we honor Saint Sharbel Makhluf. Saint Sharbel Makhluf Joseph Zaroun was s Maronite Catholic, born and raised in a small Lebanese mountain village. As a child he led a pious life of prayer and solitude. His favorite book was the Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis. When he entered the Monastery of Saint Maron at 23, he took the name Sharbel after the second-century martyr of the Antioch Church. He lived an austere life as a hermit, eating only one meal of vegetable each day, sleeping on a pillow of wood and a duvet filled with dead leaves. His time was devoted to prayer, contemplation, and manual labor. Many came to him for counsel and blessing. He died in 1898on Christmas eve.

On Wednesday we celebrate the feast of Saint James. The Saint James we honor today is the brother of the Apostle John, one of the “sons of thunder” (Mark 3:17) who were privileged witnesses of some of Jesus’ greatest signs: the raising of the daughter of Jairus from the dead, the Transfiguration, and the agony in the garden. James was the first apostle to suffer martyrdom, slain by Herod’s orders as described in Acts of the Apostles. According to legend, his remains were carried away by his friends in a rudderless boat, which drifted al the way to Spain. Many centuries later his remains were discovered, and a great cathedral was built over the spot where they were found (Santiago de Compostela, which became one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages). To this day, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make their way to that remote corner of Spain to venerate the relics of Saint James. On Thursday we celebrate the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne. The information we have regarding Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, comes from an unreliable source known as the Gospel of James. They are portrayed as an old and barren couple who long bring life into the world. Through an angelic messenger they are told they will bear a child-not just any child, but one who will be revered for all time. A following developed around both of them, but it seems that Saint Anne had a stronger following, which continues to flourish, especially in Canada. She is the patron of childless women, expectant mothers and women in labor. As always, let us pray for peace, Father Duffell DOWNEY SIDE AGENCY Downey Side Adoption Agency is seeking families interested in adoption. Fr.

Padre Duffell
