Three times Jesus asks Peter the same question; three times Peter answers, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.” Peter’s triple affirmation of love erases his triple denial of Jesus, and Jesus says, in effect, “Then, Peter, reach out in love to others as I am reaching out in love to you.”
A teacher who had nearly 30 years of experience teaching young people wrote: “Early in my career, someone gave me a motivational piece called ‘Masks.’ It reads (in part):
I give the impression that I am secure, That confidence is my name, coolness is my game, and that I need no one. Please don’t believe me. My surface may seem smooth, but my surface is a mask. Beneath dwells the real me - in confusion, in fear, in aloneness. You have got to help me. It will not be easy for you. The nearer you approach, the blinder I may strike back. I fight against the very thing I cry out for. But I am told that love is stronger than the strongest walls. And in this lies my hope – my only hope!
This moving passage should be read again and again by parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers. It highlights an important guideline for those of us seeking to follow Christ: No one needs love more than someone who doesn’t seem to deserve it.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus commissions Peter to reach out in love to others, especially those who seem least deserving of it, just as his triple denial of the Master made him least deserving of the Master’s love. Notice that Jesus never asks for an apology. Instead, in his great generosity, he forgets everything and says, “Feed my sheep. I love you; I trust you; now I ask you to take care of them for me.”
And now it’s Peter’s turn to say to us what Jesus said to him, both by word and example: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. If you love only those who love you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that!”

On the morning of May 5, 1862, 6,000 French troops stormed the Mexican city of Heróica, Puebla de Zaragoza to bring it under French rule. The Mexican soldiers were outnumbered, but they fiercely fought back. By early evening, the French had retreated. Today we celebrate the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla . En la mañana del 5 de Mayo de 1862, 6,000 tropas Francesas asaltaron la Ciudad Mexicana de Heróica, Puebla de Zaragoza para ponerla bajo el dominio Francés. Los soldados Mexicanos fueron superados en número, pero se defendieron ferozmente. A primera hora de la tarde, los Franceses se habían retirado. Hoy celebramos la victoria Mexicana sobre las fuerzas Francesas en la Batalla de Puebla.
