FROM FATHER JOHN: “Pope Francis has made it clear that the Church is living at a critical moment. It will not do, he insists, to rely on our accustomed ways. The world has changed too much. We need to wake up, may-be even be shaken awake.” (Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Joliet, Pastoral Letter, Go, He said) Announcement - Concerning Mass Times – Unfortunately, my bulletin article from last week concerning mass times was cut off by the publisher. The following is the complete announcement and article. The Parish Pastoral Council, the Liturgy Commission and I have been discussing our weekend mass schedule for the last eight months. We have conducted a survey of our parishioners and have shared the results with you in the bulletin in mid-January. At the heart of this discussion has been the mission that our Lord Jesus has given each of us as his disciples both as individuals and as members of this parish and the Catholic Church. It’s a simple, straight forward mission but a mission that is fraught with difficulties in our culture and society. The mission is simply this: “Then Jesus approached and said to them, ‘All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20) This is our mission as Catholics, as disciples, as members of St. Paul the Apostle Parish – to bring people to Our Lord and God, to be his instrument in the making of new disciples and in the strengthening of one another in faith. We have seen a significant decline in Mass attendance at the weekend Masses at our parish. You can see evidence of this in the empty pews each Sunday. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of our parishioners who responded to the question in our survey regarding whether adding an evening mass would help our mass attendance responded positively. Eight percent (8%) responded negatively while the other fourteen percent (14%) were unsure. Our Parish Pastoral Council, with the concurrence of our Liturgy Commission, has recommended to me that we add a 6:00 pm Sunday evening mass (without music) and leave the Sunday morning schedule as is on a three to six month trial basis. They have also recommended that we count mass attendance at every mass and then after the trial period make a final decision on what our Sunday schedule should be going forward based on actual mass at-tendance. They have recommended that, at the end of the trial period, we eliminate the evening mass if it is poorly attended and/or consolidate the morning masses if one or more of them are poorly attended. I have accepted their recommendation and we will be adding a Sunday evening 6:00 pm mass (without music) on May 5th. Please keep in mind, that at the end of the trial period, a final decision on our Sunday Mass schedule will be made based on actual mass attendance. If you like your mass time, invite your friends and family to come to church with you because mass attendance is going to drive the final decision. The following will be our Sunday Mass schedule during the trial period beginning on May 5th: 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am and 6:00 pm.
We need to continue to pray for those who are in need. It was discussed at the most recent Liturgy meeting and it was decided
that our prayer list that is posted each week with the names of the individuals needing prayers is quite outdated. We would like to begin start from scratch. Due to the HIPA laws we no longer receive phone
calls from the hospitals or nursing homes letting us know that we have a parishioner that has been admitted so we are looking to all of you for your help to rebuild a current list so that nobody gets missed. Please
contact the Parish office if there is someone that you would like to have placed on the prayer list or if you know of someone who was on the current list that still needs our
prayers. The only way this can be done is with your help. You can also email me if that is easier Thank you for your help with this it is greatly appreciated, we all know that
miracles can happen with prayers.

Gospel Reading Luke 13:1-9 Jesus preaches a lesson on repentance Family Connection
We may be unfamiliar with fig trees, but we might know about the growth of spring flowers. Perhaps we have looked at a dry, brown flower bulb and wondered how this produces the colorful tulip or daffodil blossom that we expect to bloom in the spring. Perhaps we've even thought about the patience and hope that are required to plant flower bulbs in October. We don't have to be gardeners, however, to know about patience and hopefulness. As parents, we practice these virtues each day with our children. We may become frustrated and even angered by their willfulness and lack of cooperation. Yet we continue to offer our attention and guidance in hope that one day our efforts will bear fruit. Today's parable suggests that God is like that with us, working with us in patience and in hope that one day we will show evidence that such work is not in vain. As parents, we know God's kindness when we find evidence for our hope for our children. Does God find such glimmers of hope as he works with us? Gather your family and show a spring flower in bloom. Recall that in the fall this flower was a dry bulb (if a flower bulb is available, show this as well). Talk about the hopefulness and patience shown by those who plant flower bulbs in the fall in the hope that they will bloom in the spring. Read aloud today's Gospel, Luke 13:1-9. Compare the parable of the barren fig tree to your discussion about spring flowers. Consider the pa-tience and hopefulness that God has with us as he works with us, calling us to return to him when we sin. Of-fer prayers of thanks and praise to God for his patience and hopefulness towards us. Conclude by praying to-gether today's Psalm, Psalm 103
