He was not ashamed to preach the gospel or to welcome sinners and eat with them, he was steadfast in his teachings and conduct, and he was forceful but compassionate in his teachings for he taught with authority. Today in the gospel of St John, he manifested his steadfastness and teaching authority which according to St JoseMaria is also called “holy intransigence” or “holy forcefulness.” The Passover of the Jews which was the feast commemorating the liberation of the Jews from the slavery of Egypt was drawing near, Jesus went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He discovered to his greatest dismay the abuse going on in the temple. People were selling oxen, sheep, pigeons, and other items used in sacrifices to the pilgrims who would offer them during the feast. There was also money ex- change transaction going on because the Roman currency was in use at that time whereas only the Jewish shekels could be used to buy animals for sacrifice. The pilgrims were required to change the Roman currency into Jewish shekel for the purpose. Jesus was convinced of the truth of his ideals, therefore he did not compromise his ardor for the house of God “zeal for your house consumes me” (Ps.69:10) hence his use of force. Why did Jesus use whip quite unlike him to drive people out of the temple? What moral lessons do we learn from his holy intran- sigence? Jesus knew that the wisdom of God is manifested in his Commandments which we read in today’s first reading. He at- tached much importance to them because it is by obeying them that we can know the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Jesus had summarized the Ten Commandments into two, Love of God and Love of neighbor (Mtt.22:36-40). He had already warned that whoever breaks one of the least of these Commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these Commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Mtt.5:19-20). So, the action of Christ in today’s gospel tells us of the conse- quences of moving away from these Commandments. We have some moral lessons to learn from today’s readings especially from the gospel. God had given us his Commandments in order to help us appreciate the love he has for us through the obedience of those laws. But the philosophies of the world and our great tech- nological advances have so much taken the place of our faith in God such that we have only progressed very little in the ways of God over the centuries. The extent which we have turned our back on the redeeming love of God is revealed in the level of religious intolerance, wars, genocide, greed, racial bigotry, and sexual violence going on in the world today. They have imposed a deluge of guilt on us. Today’s gospel reading and this holy season of Lent call on us for scrutiny. It is not surprising that the Church sets apart this third Sunday of Lent as the day for the elect preparing for baptism to receive their First Scrutiny. This is the day when the Catholic communities both plead for and cele- brate liberation from these evils by calling for scrutinies. Through the prayers, we acknowledge God’s power to free us from that which makes us less human. Our bodies are the tem- ples of the Holy Spirit, Lenten period calls on us to scrutinize and cleanse them with the whip of our penance and prayers.

Third Sunday of Lent Page Five
