AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

LITANY OF FREEDOM Sing a song of praise and thanks to them

Whose names may be unknown And whose graves go unadorned Yet whose service and sacrifice

Allow us to stand here free To live where we want To love whom we will

Worshipping the God of our understanding In our own way or not at all.

Because of them we stand here free To speak out or keep silence.

Free from fear and want and poverty Free to choose and free to go our own way.

O blessed freedom first bestowed On poor, forgotten slaves in Egypt’s land

O frightful freedom of the wilderness When we were forced to rely on God alone

O eternal freedom purchased for all time By the blood of Christ on the cross

Which broke once and for all The chains that bound us to the past.

O holy freedom, which compels us To go out to all enslaved to sin,

Society or self and show the Way To enter into and live new life

As precious sons and daughters of God

by Joseph R. Veneroso, M.M.

YOU CAN BE A LIGHT DURING THIS TIME For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.

JUNE 28, 2020 - 7 - THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME VENERABLE FULTON J SHEEN

ON PUBLIC OPINION: “One of the difficulties in substituting society for God, is that any human society, even at its best, is

too often undiscriminating in its judgments, and sometimes too arrogant and cruel, to serve as an object of worship. It likewise fails to take into account the fact that great heroes, saints, and sometimes scholars are those opposed to public opinion in the name of conscience and moral insight. Public opinion and social judgments are sometimes wrong. It was public opinion that crucified Christ.”

(Source: “Philosophy of Religion”, New York: Appleton-Century-Crofts, page 231, 1948)

DIVINE FLESH Even those Christians who deny the Real Presence believe in the power of Jesus to heal illnesses in the present day. But Christ gave us his flesh united to his divinity for life eternal. Why doubt that he speaks the truth?

Christ speaks of his body when he says, “And the bread which I will give is my flesh” (John 6:51), for he had said he was the living bread. So that we do not think that he is such so far as he is the Word in his soul alone, he shows that even his flesh is life-giving, for it is an instrument of his divinity. Since an instrument acts by virtue of the agent, then just as the divinity of Christ is life-giving, so too his flesh gives life, because of the Word to which it is united. Thus Christ healed the sick by his touch. So when he said, “I am the living bread,” it pertained to the power of the Word; but what he is saying here pertains to the sharing in his body, that is, the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The truth of this sacrament is indicated when he says, “is my flesh.” He does not say, “This signifies my flesh”, but it “is my flesh,” for in reality that which is taken is truly the body of Christ . . . . Since the whole Christ is contained in the sacrament, why did he only say, this “is my flesh”? To answer this, we should note that in this mystical sacrament the whole Christ is really contained: but his body is there by virtue of the conversion, while his soul and divinity are present by natural concomitance. If we were to suppose what is really impossible, that is, that the divinity of Christ is separated from his body, then his divinity would not be present in the sacrament. Similarly, if a priest had consecrated bread during the three days Christ was dead, his soul would not have been present there (in the sacrament), but his body would have been, as it was on the cross or in the tomb.

-Saint Thomas Aquinas, Commentary on the Gospel of Saint John

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . . Do I thank Christ for the eternal life he is giving me already?

CLOSING PRAYER Lord, as you healed the sick with your touch, so heal me with your Sacred Flesh. (Source: “A Year With The Eucharist,” Paul Jerome Keller, OP, Saint Benedict

CATECHISM CORNER: HOW TO EAT AN ELEPHANT ONE BITE AT A TIME

Article 25 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The whole concern of doctrine and its teaching must be directed to the love that never ends.

REFLECTION: As we strive to grow in our lives as Catholic Christians, there is one clear message by which we can check our progress-that is love. Even if one memorizes the entire Catechism, it is of no use if one does not grow in love because of it.

PRAYER: Sacred Heart of Jesus, make our hearts like your heart so that we may have a deep and sincere love for everyone we meet.

FORMED - A NEW LOOK AND FEEL Our parish provides each parishioner a format to have a closer relationship with Jesus. This format is the FORMED website, www.formed.org. The website has made some important changes: 1) All Formed content can now be downloaded and played

offline on smartphones and tablets. 2) We have added more apps including Roku and Apple TV. 3) We have made registration much simpler – no more

passwords necessary. 4) We’ve improved search functionality to make it easier to

find the faith forming content you’re looking for. New content including: Lectio Divina and YDisciple content for youth ministry. This website, in a video for preparation for catechists, states two current alarming states of our Catholic faith. First, only 30% of Catholics believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Second, only 48% of Catholics have a personal relationship with Jesus. Parishioners are strongly encouraged to go to the formed website and view the video presentation titled: to “PRESENCE – THE MYSTERY OF THE EUCHARIST”. There are three brilliant 30 minute presentations explaining the source and summit of our faith. There is also a study guide that is available at no cost. Reflection on the content will bring you to a closer relationship with Jesus. FORMED.ORG

Watch a free new movie on FORMED.org., for July 4th: “Freedom”, starring Cuba Gooding. This is an hour and a half movie. Two men separated by 100 years are united in their search for freedom. In 1856 a slave, Samuel Woodward, and his family escape from the Monroe plantation near Richmond, Virginia. A secret network of ordinary people known as the Underground Railroad guide the family north to Canada. They are relentlessly pursued by a notorious slave hunter. Hunted like a dog and haunted by unthinkable suffering he and his forbears have endured. Samuel is forced to decide between revenge and freedom. A hundred years earlier in 1748, John Newton, the captain of a slave trader, sails from Africa to America. On board is Samuel’s great grandfather, whose survival is tied to the fate of Captain Newton. The voyage changes Newton’s life forever and he creates a legacy that will inspire Samuel and the lives of millions for generations to come.

SAINT THOMAS THE APOSTLE SAINT OF THE DAY FOR JULY 3

(1ST CENTURY – DECEMBER 21, 72)

SAINT THOMAS THE APOSTLE’S STORY Poor Thomas! He made one remark and has been branded as “Doubting Thomas” ever since. But if he doubted, he also believed. He made what is certainly the most explicit statement of faith in the New Testament: “My Lord and My God!” and, in so expressing his faith, gave Christians a prayer that will be said till the end of time. He also occasioned a compliment from Jesus to all later Christians: “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). Thomas should be equally well-known for his courage. Perhaps what he said was impetuous—since he ran, like the rest, at the showdown—but he can scarcely have been insincere when he expressed his willingness to die with Jesus. The occasion was when Jesus proposed to go to Bethany after Lazarus had died. Since Bethany was near Jerusalem, this meant walking into the very midst of his enemies and to almost certain death. Realizing this, Thomas said to the other apostles, “Let us also go to die with him” (John 11:16b).

REFLECTION Thomas shares the lot of Peter the impetuous, James and John, the “sons of thunder,” Philip and his foolish request to see the Father—indeed all the apostles in their weakness and lack of understanding. We must not exaggerate these facts, however, for Christ did not pick worthless men. But their human weakness again points up the fact that holiness is a gift of God, not a human creation; it is given to ordinary men and women with weaknesses; it is God who gradually transforms the weaknesses into the image of Christ, the courageous, trusting, and loving one.
