Saints Peter and Paul

On June 29 we celebrate the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. This feast is so important that we observe it even when it falls on a Sunday and so some years it replaces a regular Sunday in Ordinary Time. Both Peter and Paul were martyred in the city of Rome under the persecution of Emperor Nero. Peter was executed on the Vatican hill, and Paul outside the city walls. Together these two apostles represent the gospel mission to the Jews and the Gentiles. Tradition says that they embraced before marching off to their deaths. In many countries this feast is one of the holy days of obligation. We might call this day “Founding Fathers’ Day.”

Thought for the day… We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to "live the good life." But as Christian stewards are we called to a different kind of freedom? One where we are free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God's work here on earth.

Celebrating the Gift of Humor… Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

OUTSIDE THE PARISH

MIGRANT MINISTRY COLLECTION The Diocese of Richmond coordinates outreach to 7,500 Mexican migrant farm workers during the summer months in Southwest and the Eastern Shore, Virginia. The office provides pastoral care, liturgies and sacraments, as well as food and clothing. Most of the workers are single, young men, but there are some workers who bring their wives and children. The Head Start Programs along the Eastern Shore have 200 children ages 8 weeks to 6 years whose mothers and fathers work the fields. The following items are greatly needed for the workers who arrive with limited belongings. Due to the extreme heat in the fields, the gently-used and new clothing must be 99% - 100% cotton please. • Cotton pants, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, shorts, straw hats and baseball caps for men, women and

children. • NEW socks, NEW underwear, NEW bed pillows, towels and sheets. • Kitchen supplies such as pots, pans, cups, bowls, plastic food containers, lunch boxes etc. • Toiletries of any size, insect repellant, sun-block, sun glasses (NO MEDICATIONS OF ANY KIND CAN BE ACCEPTED). • Food Lion gift cards for groceries (please leave these in the parish office). • Miscellaneous items, such as rosaries, Spanish Bibles and Spanish/English dictionaries. Collection boxes will be in the commons July 3/4 and July 10/11. Thank you for all that you do to support this ministry.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JUNE 27, 2010 5

OUTSIDE THE PARISH JOIN THE VOICES OF FAITH (the Roanoke Valley’s Inter-religious initiative) on Wednesday, June 30 at Our Lady of Nazareth at 7 pm to learn more about life in the multi-cultural and multi-faith America of today. Three religious leaders (Jewish, Muslim and Christian) share how their faith is enriched by friendships with people of other faiths. Each session will consist of a 30 minute video followed by discussion and reflection. Fr. Joe and John & Katie Zawacki, regional representatives under the Bishop’s liaison to the Jewish & Muslim communities, will host these evenings. THE SOCIETY OF ST. ANDREW is looking once again to find people to help glean the fields of Virginia from July through the middle of November. There is a job for all ages and ability for whatever time you are able to give. Gleaning is very scriptural, farmers leaving the last of their yield in the fields for the poor and the widows to gather Ruth 2:2-3. Anyone interested in helping to feed the hungry in this way will find registration forms and liability forms on the bulletin board. Or contact Sarah Ramey for more information 1-800-333-4597 or www.endhunger.org. JUBILEE HOUSE RETREAT CENTER On Saturday, July 10, in Abingdon, the center will host 'Me and My Shadow', a workshop looking at the nature of our shadow selves - parts of ourselves we hide, squelch or don't even know exist. Participants will learn methods of knowing and embracing the shadow and its importance in spiritual growth and holistic living. Presenter is Maura Ubinger. Cost: $30 (includes lunch).
