VATICAN SPLENDORS ST. LOUISE BOOK GROUP

IN MEMORIAM

Gil De Sante

Our current selec on is “The Girl Who Wrote in Silk” by Kelli Estes. Kelli writes about Inara Erickson who is exploring her deceased aunt’s island estate when she finds an elaborately s tched piece of fabric hidden in the house. Curious about why the fabric is hidden, she peels back layer upon layer of the secrets it holds. Inara’s life is then changed as her life becomes interwoven with that of Mei Lein, a young Chinese girl who was mysteriously driven from her home a century before. Through the stories Mei Lein tells in silk, Inara uncovers a tragic truth that will shake her family to its core—and force her to make an impossible choice. This book was inspired by true events. This is a tale of two women who are determined to do the right thing. We meet to discuss this book on Monday, July 25th at 6:30 PM in the Board Room. For any addi onal informa on email us at: [email protected] or telephone Kathy Janicki at 909-816-1661.

SOCIAL CLUB

We are a fun group of people who meet the fourth Sunday of each month at 2:00 PM. Stop by for a round of bingo and see what we are about, we would love to have you!

PRAY FOR THE SICK

Please pray for those listed below who are sick:

Thank you for asking me to share my recent retreat experience. I spent me in retreat at St. Placid Priory, in Lacey, Washington. St. Placid is a spirituality center managed by Benedic ne Sisters. The Priory is a monastery surrounded by beau ful forest trees and colorful flowers. While strolling along the surrounding peaceful gardens of the monastery daily in the early morning, I saw deer, rabbits, a few squirrels, many birds and bu erflies. The rhododendrons were full of large red and purple flowers. The Japanese maple trees provided a beau ful canopy of red. The mountain laurel shrubs were in bloom with gorgeous, pink flowers. I could not help but feel God’s presence in His beau ful and awesome crea on around me.

The purpose of my retreat was to ini ate myself into learning, developing and cul va ng a meaningful life of prayer. The monastery and the Benedic ne Sisters provide an atmosphere for contempla ve prayer. Sr. Lucy and Sr. Sharon were instrumental to my spiritual direc on. I started on some helpful reading of books: The Cup of Life by Joyce Rupp, The Monastery of the Heart An Invita on to a Meaningful Life & Songs of the Heart of Reflec ons on The Psalms by Sr. Joan Chi ster. Each retreatant can schedule a session for spiritual guidance/direc on in any day during her/his retreat.

During the Liturgy of the Hours, which I a ended daily at the chapel, I felt an inner peace and a connec on with God Our Creator, Our Redeemer Jesus Christ & Mother Mary as I followed and prayed with the Sisters, the psalms of praise and the Magnificat, the monas c way. As the Liturgy of The Hours are psalm-centered, I am now more mindful of this prayerful form of praise, thanksgiving and giving glory to God as frequently as possible not only in church. The Benedic ne Sisters share the celebra on of The Eucharist daily at the chapel with the surrounding community. As the priest comes to the chapel to celebrate the Eucharist daily, I thought that was a blessing during my retreat as I did not have to drive to church to a end Holy Mass. All I did was walk into the chapel.

The Benedic ne Sisters are very hospitable. Upon arrival on my first day of retreat, I was greeted by a warm hug Sr. Lucy. The office coordinator named Janice, was also warm and welcoming. A er the noon praise and evening praise, I had the chance to meet and chat with the kind and holy Benedic ne Sisters . They all made me feel welcomed and at home. I also had the chance to chat with other retreatants.

During the recrea on hour a er the evening praise, the Sisters share their art work or any project each one is working on. I was happy to share what I make, the cord rosaries for the missions.

My retreat provided a quiet me and quiet space to reflect on the Word of God and contemplate on ma ers that have eternal values. I am so glad I took the

me and effort to drive myself to the retreat. It was invigora ng, spiritually enriching and spiritually rewarding. Thanks be to God. Josephine Flores, Parishioner

Fire safety: planning and preparation The United States has the highest fire death and injury rate in the world. Every 80 seconds, a family—somewhere in the U.S.—is impacted by a residential fire. A little planning and effort can help minimize your family’s risk. You can start by installing, testing, and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. For a list of other suggestions please email: [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227 to receive a copy of the VIRTUS® article “A Reminder About Fire Safety in the Home.”

For more information on other ways to keep kids safe, contact Linda Filkins, the Parish Safeguard Committee Chairperson at (626) 214-7846 or the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office at (213) 637-7227. For particular help, call the Victims Assistance Office at (213) 637-7650.

Since 1985 The Tidings has been telling the story of the Church in Los Angeles and across the globe.

On July 1 The Tidings will be transformed and become a multimedia platform: Angelus News. The new presence will include a weekly magazine, a website (AngelusNews.com), social media channels and a daily digital newsletter.

We are following Pope Francis as he revolutionizes the Church’s use of media.

Look for more national and worldwide reporting, stunning photography and a new design that’s attractive to new readers from every generation. We’re the largest archdiocese in the United States. We have a great story to tell. And Angelus will tell it well.

We’re bringing on new writers – just wait and see the names—

but we’re keeping the contributors you already love to read: Archbishop Gomez, Bishop Barron, Father Ronald Rolheiser and Heather King.

We are proud of our past, but looking to the future.

We are launching on July 1, the Feast of St. Junipero Serra. His motto was “Always forward, never back.” We’re taking his words to heart to better serve you.
