Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 27, 2019 St. Anthony Catholic Church, Frankfort, IL
St. Vincent de Paul Society St. Anthony Conference
In this Sunday’s Gospel, the tax collector’s prayer allows God to be God and so allows God to pour mercy into his heart. When we
pray and give alms to the poor, we allow God’s mercy to be poured into their hearts. In October, through your monetary and food donations we were able to assist 45 families with food and some utility expenses and miscellaneous expenses. It is through your help we can continue to continue our St. Vincent DePaul service to others. We thank the Knights of Columbus for their generous donation of new winter coats for the children of the families we serve and some of our members shopped and got hats and mittens to go along with the coats. Also thank you to all who dropped off used coats in good condition to take to the St .Vincent de Paul store in Joliet. Our next food pantry will be November 10 and we will also have the St. Vincent DePaul truck in the church parking lot during Mass times for your donations of clothing and other small household appliances. Please have the person in need living within our church boundaries call the Parish office phone at 815-469-3750 ext. 114 and leave a message. The call will be answered as soon as possible. For Clothing or household item donations call for a SVDP truck to pick up 630-231-4658 or hang on to items until November 16-17 when the truck will be in our church parking lot..

b. Is a theological construct from the Church
of the Middle Ages, and since Vatican II we
recognize that there are only two kinds of
sins, venial and serious.
c. Is the same as serious sin; only the words
are different.
d. Makes it impossible for you ever to get to
heaven, no matter what you do.
e. None of the above.
Last Week’s Answer:
b. because purgatory is an official dogma of
the Church. Even though it is not much
talked about today, Catholics still must be-
lieve in it. It is not optional.
Catechist Corner
What is interior or "contemplative" prayer?
Contemplative prayer is love, silence,
listening, and being in the presence of
God. For interior prayer one needs time,
resolve, and above all a pure heart. It is the
humble, poor devotion of a creature that
drops all masks, believes in love, and
seeks God from the heart. Interior prayer is
often called the prayer of the heart and
contemplation. (YOUCAT questions 503)
Dig Deeper: CCC section (2709)
Our Catholic tradition points out
seven sins that are especially
dangerous because they dull
our spiritual senses. Because
these sins are so harmful, we
call them the capital or deadly
sins. They are pride, greed,
envy, anger, gluttony, lust, and
sloth. In this Sunday's Gospel,
Jesus is warning us about the
sin of pride. When we are
humble, we recognize our
dependence and need for God.
We acknowledge that God is
the source of any talents that
we have, and we recognize that any good that we are able to do is because of God's grace
working in us.
Question for Children: Jesus teaches us to be humble – but what does that mean? How
do you show you are humble?
Question for Adults: This Gospel reading suggests that we approach God and each other
with humility. What does this mean, in practical terms? How do we "humble" ourselves?
What does that mean?

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better . In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s.

U n p l a n n e d , t h e m o v i e Unplanned is the inspiring true story of one woman’s
journey of transformation. It is the most important
movie you will ever see on this most controversial issue
of our time.
All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As
one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in
the nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000
abortions and counseled countless women about their
reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a
woman’s right to choose even led her to become a
spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact
legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in.
Until the day she saw something that changed
everything, leading Abby Johnson to join her former
enemies at 40 Days For Life, and become one of the
most ardent pro-life speakers in America. For more

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday’s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday’s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus’ saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the “Day of the Dead.” Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead.” A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith.
