In a religious milieu that was often marked by legalism and scrupulosity, Jesus brought a kind of freedom. He reminded us that the laws of religion are made to serve the ultimate goal of love: love for God and love for neighbor. Think about the Ten Commandments. This classical summary of God's rules for us can be divided into two types of laws. First come the laws about loving God: have no strange gods; don't take the Lord's name in vain; honor the Sabbath. Then come the laws about loving our neighbor: honor your parents; don't kill; don't commit adultery; don't steal; be honest; and don't covet your neighbor's spouse or property. When we follow the law of love that Jesus preaches today, all of this is taken care of. If we loved God with our whole heart, mind, and soul, for example, there would be no room left for false gods. There would be no bitterness or apathy leading us to disrespect God's name or to fail to worship him as he has asked. Similarly, if we loved our neighbors as ourselves by following the Golden Rule, then we would naturally respect them instead of lying, killing, coveting, or the like. A Family Perspective - In today’s gospel the Pharisee was talking about commandments (something we are forced to obey by external pressure) and Jesus was talking about love (an internal Exhortation to give our heart, soul and mind to another). One demands allegiance, the other requires personal commitment. In our families we daily lay down our lives for each other not because we ‘gotta’ but because love compels us.

Prayer for Priests in honor of Priesthood Sunday Lord God, most holy, we approach you in gratitude for your holy ordained priesthood. You have called these men to be set apart and to shepherd your people, as you shepherd your entire church. We pray for them in their daily work. Grant to them an increase in spiritual gifts and grace, so they may be prepared for the tasks at hand. Lead them not into temptation and protect them from the grasp of the evil one. It is through the sacraments they confer that we encounter the divine in a real and profound way. May your church never lose sight of these, your special sons, and may we, the body of Christ, never fail to cherish the gift of their lives, which they have freely given to you and your holy church. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son. Amen.
