In few days we will begin our journey through the month of November in which we cel‐ebrate the feast of most saints. While all through the liturgical year we celebrate one or two saints a day, November 1 celebrates a multitude of Saints. Probably more numer‐ous than the rest of the liturgical year put together. However, more than the feast of All Saints, November is known for the celebration of all souls, an annual celebration to honor the dead. By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion. In November, it is the Holy Souls in Purgatory, those faithful Christians who have died and gone before us but who still must atone for their sins. The time they spend in Purgatory cleanses them so that they may enter Heaven free from all effects of sin. The Catholic Church does not have the monopoly of honoring the dead. Most religions and cultures have their customs and rituals to pay final respect to the dead. While November 2 remained the liturgical celebration for “All Souls”, in time the entire month of November became associated in the Western Catholic tradition with prayer for the departed; lists of names of those to be remembered being placed in the proxim‐ity of the altar on which the sacrifice of the mass is offered. Historically, the Western tradition identifies the general custom of praying for the dead dating as far back as 2 Maccabees 12:42-46. The custom of setting apart a special day for intercession of the faithful on November 2 was first established by St. Odilo of Cluny (d. 1048) at his abbey of Cluny in 998. Praying for the dead, especially for those we have known, is a requirement of Christian charity. Reason why we offer prayers and Holy Mass for the deceased. Our own prayers and sacrifices can be offered up to relieve their suffering. Here is a beautiful prayer that can be used in this month of November, as we recom‐mend our beloved ones to the loving mercy of the heavenly Father! “Eternal rest grant unto them o Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them – May they rest in peace!”

En muy pocos días vamos a iniciar nuestro recorrido en el mes de noviembre en el cual celebramos la fiesta de Todos los Santos. Aunque a lo largo del año celebramos uno o dos santos al día, el 1º de noviembre celebramos una multitud de Santos. Probable‐mente el número de santos más numeroso que todo el resto del año litúrgico. De cualquier manera, más que por la fiesta de todos los Santos, noviembre es conoci‐dos por la celebración anual en honor a los Fieles Difuntos. Por tradición, la Iglesia Ca‐tólica dedica cada mes del año a cierta devoción. En noviembre, es para las Almas Ben‐ditas del Purgatorio, los fieles cristianos que han partido antes de nosotros, pero que aún deben expiar sus pecados. El tiempo que pasan en el Purgatorio los purifica para que puedan entrar al cielo libres de los efectos del pecado. La Iglesia Católica no tiene el monopolio para honrar a los muertos. La mayoría de las religiones y las culturas tiene sus tradiciones y rituales para pagar el respeto final a los muertos. Aunque el 2 de noviembre se mantiene como la celebración litúrgica para “Todas las Al‐mas”, en un tiempo, todo el mes de noviembre se asociaba con la tradición católica de occidente para la oración por los que ya se han ido; las listas con los nombres de los que vamos a estar recordando se van a poner en la proximidad del altar donde se ofre‐ce la Misa. Históricamente, la tradición occidental identifica la costumbre general de orar por los muertos, desde el tiempo de 2 Macabeos 12:42-46. La costumbre de separar un día especial por la intercesión de los fieles difuntos el 2 de noviembre, fue estableci‐do por San Odilón de Cluny (d. 1048) en su abadía de Cluny en 998. Rezar por los muertos, en especial por los que conocimos, es un requisito de la caridad cristiana. Motivo por el que ofrecemos oraciones y Santas Misas para los fieles difun‐tos. Debemos ofrecer nuestras oraciones y sacrificios para aliviar su sufrimiento. Esta es una hermosa oración que se puede usar este mes de noviembre, al encomendar a nuestros seres queridos a la misericordia amorosa de nuestro Padre Celestial. “¡Dales Señor el descanso eterno y brille para ellos la luz perpetua – descansen en paz!”
