SCRIPTURE FOR OCTOBER 27

First Reading Sirach 35:12–14, 16–18 (150C) Though not unduly partial toward the weak, God hears the cry of the oppressed. God is not deaf to the wail of the orphan or the complaints of the widow. The Lord is a God of justice. Responsorial Psalm 34:2–3, 17–18, 19, 23 The Lord hears the cry of the poor. Second Reading 2 Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18 Paul claimed to Timothy that he had fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. He claimed that now a crown of victory awaits him as he arrives safely in the heavenly reign. Gospel Acclamation 2 Corinthians 5:19 God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, and entrusting to us the message of salvation. Gospel Luke 18:9–14 Jesus told the story about

the Pharisee and the tax collector to help those who placed confidence in their own righteousness while holding others in contempt. Jesus encour-aged people to pray with the tax collector, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.”

FEAST OF ALL SAINTS - FRIDAY, NOV 01

This feast, which began in the East, commemo-rates all martyrs and was progressively adopted in the West. In the eighth century, it was celebrated in Rome on November 01 and was soon widely observed elsewhere on this day.

The feast honors all holy men and women in glory with Christ: known or unknown, mighty or lowly, all whose lives were modeled on the Beatitudes; and on the greatest commandment of love for God and neighbor.

FEAST OF ALL SOULS - SAT., NOV 02

From its earliest days, the Church prayed for the dead and different days were set aside to pray for them in particular ways.

Our present November 02 commemoration is of monastic origin and can be traced back to St. Odilo, 5th Benedictine Abbot of Cluny, France (1048 A.D.). It was about 400 years later that the feast was universally commemorated in the West. November 02 was chosen in order that the memory of all the “holy saints,” both the saints in heaven and souls in purgatory, should be celebrat-ed on two successive days, and in this way, ex-press Christian belief in the “Communion of Saints.”

SUNG MORNING PRAYER

We will offer sung morning prayer on Friday, November 01 and Saturday, November 02 at 8:30AM, in honor of All Saints and All Souls. Please join the Church in prayer on these day.

PATRIOTIC ROSARY

Come and pray the Patriotic Rosary in the church on Sunday, November 10, at 2:00PM along with members of the Saint Eulalia Men’s Fellowship Group. The rosary, along with patriotic songs and readings, will be offered for our country, the in-tentions of our Pope, and for all of our personal intentions. Come and bring your family and friends.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

Daylight savings time ends next Sunday, No-vember 03 so be sure to move your clocks back one hour.

SAINT EULALIA FALL LECTURE SERIES

Our lecture series this year will focus on the question, “Why Become or Remain Catholic?”

The final evening of this three-part series will be held in Manion Hall on Tuesday evening, Octo-ber 29 at 7:00PM. The guest speakers for the evening will be members of St. Eulalia Parish.

There will be about a 25-minute presentation and an opportunity for response and questions. Join us!

THANK YOU AND SEND OFF PARTY

We will be having a gathering for our dear custodi-an, Al DiMinico, on Wednesday, October 30 fol-lowing the 9:00AM Mass.

Al is retiring as of Thursday, October 31 after four-plus years as our Custodian/Handy Man/Copier machine guy, etc., and dear friend. We wish him happiness and relaxation and many adventures along with his wife, Ellen.

Best wishes and continued good health, Al. God Bless, Fr. John, Fr. Jim, and all of the Staff.

CANCELLATION-BIBLE STUDY

There will be no Bible study class on Halloween night, Thursday, October 31. Classes will re-sume on the following Thursday evening, No-vember 07.

BISHOP BARRON’S SERIES: THE MASS

Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Robert Bar-ron and be transformed through insights on this most privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord, Jesus Christ.

This six part series will be shown in McGann Con-ference Room on Sunday mornings, October 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17, and 24 following the 9:00AM Mass, repeated on Monday evenings,

October 21, 28, November 4, 18, and 24 at 7:00PM. and repeated on Wednesday mornings, October 23, 30, November 6, 13, 20, 27 following the 9:00AM Mass.

Come and grow in your understanding of the Eu-charist and be equipped to share your faith with oth-ers. In our present situation when most Catholics no longer come to Mass or believe in the Real Pres-ence of Jesus in the Eucharist, Bishop Barron’s se-ries is a true gift of the Holy Spirit.

WHAT IS A CURSILLO?

(Pronounced: cur-SEE-yo) The Cursillo (meaning, “short course”) is an invitation to experience the love of Jesus Christ on a personal level and to bring this love and joy into your daily life. At the Saint Basil Salvatorian Center, 30 East St. in Methuen, MA, Cursillo is open to Christians at least 21 years of age.

The Cursillo begins on Thursday evening and con-cludes on Sunday evening. You will hear talks giv-en by a team of lay people and spiritual directors. You will share in small table discussions, prayer, Mass, and great meals. Cursillo weekends usually begin on the first Thursday of the month.

For men, the Cursillo is held in October, December, February, and April. For women, the Cursillo is held in November, January, March, May, and June.

Fr. John will be one of the spiritual directors on the December Men’s Weekend. He would appreciate having some of the men of the parish share the weekend with him. The dates are Thursday evening, December 5, through Sunday evening, December 8.

Fr. John will host an information evening on Cur-sillo on Wednesday, October 30, at 7:00PM in the Msgr. McGann Conference Room. Come with your questions. Any person who has made a Cur-sillo is also encouraged to be present to share your experience.

ST. EULALIA COMMUNITY DRIVE FOR CRADLES TO CRAYONS

St. Eulalia is partnering with “Cradles to Crayons” to collect new and nearly-new clothing, books, and children's items that will help local children living in homeless and low-income situations have the essentials they need to feel safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued. To see what items are most needed and accepted, please see their web-

site: https://www.cradlestocrayons.org/boston/take-action/donate-goods/items-we-accept/.

Collect: Clean out your closets and drop off new and like-new children's items at the Cradles to Crayons collection unit in the rear parking lot of St. Eulalia from October 26 – November 15.

Community sorting event: On Saturday, Novem-ber 16, from 10AM-12PM in St. Eulalia's Manion Hall, bring your family and friends and join volun-teers of all ages, for a fun, hands-on service event as we come together to sort and organize donations collected as a community.

Please register to volunteer by contacting Chris Ba-varo: [email protected]. For more in-formation or questions, email Jessica Callaghan at [email protected].

ALTAR FLOWERS

You are invited to remember a deceased loved one with a floral centerpiece for the altar. The cost of an arrangement is $75. Please contact either Laura or Joanne, our Parish Secretaries, at 781-729-8220 for further information.

JSYK* (*Just So You’ll Know)

Another email phishing scam using Fr. Hurley’s name was reported at St. Mary, Winchester. St. Eu-lalia is not involved, but just so you’ll know.

Reflection, Photograph, and Poem

© 2019 Michael J. Cunningham OFS

THE UNBROKEN WORD……………..…….…..by Michael J. Cunningham This summer, we ran several new events to broaden the appeal of Mater Dolorosa (the retreat center I work at in California) to those who have not yet experienced a retreat. I know many of you reading these reflec-tions have attended a retreat, and therefore know all too well the benefits.

One part of attending a retreat, particularly a silent one, is quieting down to listen. It is a fact we take more information in when we are listening more than when we are talking. The incessant chatter which fills up many of our days makes us desire for something softer, gentler, and less noisy in our lives. A retreat offers just such an opportunity.

Now, as we return from a retreat, how do we bring ourselves back to this quieter time? Sometimes, as we observe others talking, even jabbering, we find it irritating. Others have to fill the silence with sounds that have no meaning, at least to us.

While some of this might be put down to our own intolerance, there is another aspect to this. The Holy Longing for meaningful interactions with others particularly when a sculpted message has been prepared for us.

Where are these sculpted messages in your week? The Pastor’s homily perhaps, in a prayer encounter dur-ing the week, something profound someone said to you? Our ability to listen carefully is not just a skill, but a prayer form in itself.

I use the example reflection of The Sound Man which follows. The importance of ensuring the message is clear, unencumbered by irrelevant sounds and broadcast so we can hear it without being distracted. Let us listen this coming week for those moments where our senses are heightened as if on retreat. And listen for that small, still voice which is God calling us.

The Sound Man

Listening with intent is the only way he knows how,

Not able to tune out the mismatches or imbalances,

Continuously adjusting the “hearing” for others,

Based on the message being broadcast.

Showing care, empathy and understanding

beyond his role.

If only I could listen and hear in this way.
