Special Children’s Mass: Next Sunday at our 9:30 a.m. Mass, we once again welcome younger boys and girls to a special Mass where they will be excused after the Opening Prayer and go to the Church Hall for a special Liturgy of the Word. After this Mass please join us for a Family Coffee and Craft Hour in the school cafeteria at which we will have refreshments and make crafts for the family. We are very grateful to the parent-leaders (as well as some older children) who are assisting with this program.
S.J.B. ANNOUNCEMENTS
November 15, 2015
THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: The days are growing shorter. There is a nip in the air. Leaves are turning brown and falling off the trees. Another year is drawing to a close. As the Church year, too, approaches its end, it is only natural that the liturgy turn our attention to death – even the end of this world. Today’s first reading from the Book of Daniel (Dn. 12:1-3) and our gospel reading from St. Mark (Mk. 12:24-32) are best understood as reflections of the apocalyptic mentality that gripped many in Israel at the time when they were written. Seeing no earthly way out of foreign domination and oppression, some Jews became convinced that the end was near. In our own day, many Christians see the many troubles afflicting the world as signs of an impending apocalypse. But when and how the world will end is not the point. The real issue is how we are to prepare ourselves for our final moment. In some of the earliest Old Testament hints of eternal life, Daniel sums up the biblical route to glory: “those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever.” Even our second reading from the letter to the Hebrews (10:11-18) reflects a common apocalyptic theme: the vindication of those unjustly oppressed. The author of Hebrews (10:11-18) depicts Jesus “waiting” until His “enemies are placed beneath his feet.” The more important truth, however, is that Jesus, by His personal sacrifice, has conquered sin once and for all.
SPECIAL SAINTS’ DAYS THIS WEEK
Monday, November 16th – St. Margaret of Scotland
Born in Hungary in 1046, she married the King of Scotland and was mother of eight children. She was a queen whom her people loved and she devoted herself to the care of the poor and the sick. She is the patroness of Scotland.
Tuesday, November 17th – St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Born in 1207, this daughter of a king became the wife of another – but despite her royal connections, she devoted her life to prayer and work with the poor. She is the patroness of Catholic Charities.
Wednesday, November 18th – Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts. Peter and Paul in Rome
The original churches dedicated to these two pillars of the early church were built in the 4th century; the great edifices which every pilgrim to Rome visits today were built in the 17th and 19th century respectively. This feast reminds us of the ongoing debt that
Christians owe to St. Peter and St. Paul.
Saturday, November 21st – Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary This feast commemorates the dedication of the church of St. Mary in Jerusalem near the site of the sacred Temple. This feast also
recalls the day on which – according to ancient tradition – Mary was presented to the Lord by her parents in the Temple.
H.N.S. Thanksgiving Project: Once again this year, on November 21st, our Holy Name Society will distribute Thanksgiving baskets to needy families in the parish community. In the past, we found that it was much easier for us if parishioners would make cash donations instead of dropping off turkeys. It becomes difficult to find storage
space for them all! We will use the money to buy the turkeys on the day that they will be delivered. Donations should be placed in an envelope marked “Thanksgiving Baskets” and dropped in the collection or sent to the rectory. We do welcome donations of canned goods which can be more easily stored. It would be helpful if donations are received A.S.A.P but no later than Monday, November 16th. We are most grateful for whatever you can give.
National Holiday: Thanksgiving Day this year falls a week from this Thursday, on November 26th. As is our custom, we will have a special Vigil Mass on Wednesday evening, November 25th at 7:30 p.m. at which students from our Religious Education Program will assist at Mass, our children’s choir will sing, and Thanksgiving bread will be blessed and distributed.
On Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 26th) we will have only one Mass at 9:00 a.m. On the Friday after Thanksgiving we will have one Mass at 8:00 a.m. There will be no noon Mass on Friday, November 27th. Both the rectory and school office will be closed on Friday.
Operation Care Package 2015: The Rosary Altar Society is collecting items to be used in care packages for our troops. The drive is on Sunday, November 29th in the lower Church from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. This is our parish’s fourth drive and we
need your help. Anyone interested in donating items can drop them off to the church in the boxes labeled “Support Our Troops” starting Saturday, November 14th through Sunday, November 29th. For a list of items, please pick up sheets at the exits of the church. If you know someone’s address who is serving our country or for more information please call Gina Ramoni at 914- 776-1187. If you would like to sponsor a box for $15.00, please make checks payable to St. John the Baptist, R.A.S. and put it in an envelope labeled “Support Our Troops”. Thanks for your support.
Sunday Report: Last weekend 1,370 parishioners attended Mass; our collection totaled $9167.00; average contribution: $6.69. Thank you for your continued financial support of St. John’s and its many needs. Your generosity is essential and greatly appreciated.
Rest in Peace: Let us pray for Dorothy Nyahay and who was buried from our church this past week. Our prayers go out to her families and friends.
Lectors: Your “2016” workbooks are ready to be picked up in the Sacristy. They are filed for each Mass Team alphabetically. Please pick them up before November 22nd.
Senior News: Bargains! Bargains! Bargains! Big Bargains! Come to our Senior Bake Sale and Giant Flea Market. Take advantage of the
many bargains. The proceeds from the event go to Senior Club programs and St. John’s school student awards. The Senior Club affords our senior parishioners a place to spend time with fellow seniors, share concerns and memories, get useful information regarding health and financial issues, go on trips together, do charitable works like supplying cancer pads for patients at the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne Home for those with incurable Cancer to mention a few. Your continued support will be appreciated. This year the Bake Sale and Giant Flea Market takes place after all Masses in the lower Church.
Second Collection: This weekend we will take up our monthly special collection to support our school and maintain our school facilities.
The school is not only used for our grammar school children, our CCD classes and our RCIA program, but for a variety of community and parish activities. It is vital that we keep our school facilities in excellent condition. We ask for a contribution of $7.00 in this monthly collection and once again express our appreciation for your generosity.
Campaign for Human Development: Next week, on Sunday November 22nd, Catholics across the country are asked to take their stand beside our nation’s poor. Your generous
contribution to the Campaign for Human Development will go to support self-help projects owned and operated by poor and low-income communities. Please be generous in the special collection that will be taken up after communion that day.
A Practical Blessing: With cold and flu season upon us, we may be hearing “God bless you” more often. We often say it almost automatically when someone
sneezed, but why do we do so? Scholars have several different theories on how the practice started. One theory is that during the Bubonic Plague in the 6th century, Pope Gregory I asked people to pray to God to help fend off the illness from Rome. As sneezing was seen as a sign of the disease, people said “God bless you” to the sneezer. Another theory is that people thought the heart stopped when someone sneezed. Saying “God bless you” was believed to help them come back to life. We don’t need to wait for someone to sneeze to ask God to bless them. Asking for God’s blessing on the lives of those around us should be second nature. God has called us to take care of each other and to support each other in good times and in bad.
Holy Name Society: All the men in the parish are invited to join the Holy Name Society on Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. at La Grotta Restaurant on McLean Avenue for their monthly
meeting. The cost is $20.00 per person and includes family style dinner, beer, wine, soda and dessert. All are welcome!
Support Group: St. John’s Riverside Hospital invites all who have attended their regular Cancer Support Group to return for a special meeting on
Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 111. It will be the occasion to honor patients, families and friends. The facilitator will be: Stephanie Kamiel.
R.A.S. Christmas Party: “Please join us for an evening of dinner, dancing and good times!” at the Rosary Altar Society’s Annual Christmas Party on
Monday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the lower Church. Tickets are $25.00 for members and $30.00 for non-members. The cost includes a buffet dinner, desserts, beverages, door prizes and DJ entertainment. Dark Secret and a 50/50 raffle will be sold throughout the evening. For tickets and information, please contact Kathy Michalak at 968-9057 or Mary Browne at 968-2468. Catholic Widows/Widowers: The Catholic Widows and Widowers of Yonkers will hold their monthly meeting at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19th, in the Fr. Anthony Hall, next to St. Ann’s Church, 31 College Place, Yonkers. Coffee and cake will follow after the meeting. New members welcome.
Missalette Change
With the First Sunday of Advent in two weeks (November 29th) in addition to the usual liturgical changes, we will be changing to a new, larger print format for our Missalettes and Music Issues. This will certainly help reading the text of scripture readings and hymns more easily. The downside, however, is that the larger sizes will limit the number of the books we can put in the pews. Since we ordered the same number of these books, we will have extras in the sacristy, should they be needed.
