As we draw near to the end of the liturgical year (Advent is coming soon), the Church is putting these questions to each of us: "What do you see as the purpose of your life, of your existence in this world? How seriously should we take the predictions of today's gospel about the end of this world? Is it coming soon? And, more importantly, are we prepared? The liturgical readings on these final Sundays of the Church calendar year are meant to bring home to us the necessity of looking beyond our own immediate preoccupations, worries, troubles, and in- terests, which are largely of selfish concern. All too often we focus on the present problems and chal- lenges we face. What am I going to do about my kid acting up? How are we going to manage now that I lost my job? How am I going to tell my parents about the ‘F’ I got on my test? How am I going to deal with my illness? These readings challenge us to think ahead by bringing to focus the four end things - death, judgment, heaven, and hell. Let’s hope that, through the mercy of God, the last one is not in our future! We can do lots of good things in this life, but in the end, the only thing that saves us is God’s mercy and forgiveness. People sometimes criticize the Church for asking its members to reflect seriously on these “end things.” However, I don’t think there is anything morbid about such reflection and it should not terrify us. Why? Because we have a merciful God who is always willing to forgive us if we ask. And, as we progress through life, we are drawing ever nearer to our true home, which is hopefully heaven and not that other place. This should fill us with a greater longing to be with Christ not just in the future but right now. Yes, as Catholics we are called to live in the present. We are called to be Jesus in our world today. But our eyes should be set on the future. And, we should be preparing for that future by seeking the for- giveness of God for our transgressions and trying to be Christ-like in our families and community. There is another intriguing point in our gospel. Notice there are two important contrasting images. They are the ‘Temple’ at the beginning, and the ‘hair on your head’ at the end. This is an interesting con- trast, since the first will be destroyed, while not a single one of the last one will be harmed. I think the point Jesus is making is that God is not so concerned with Church buildings or material things. He is more concerned with us, his people. We are the Church, living stones, not brick and mortar. So, as the liturgical year come to an end, we are reminded that each one of us has an important role to play in building up God’s kingdom here in “Da” Bronx. I am reminded that my job as pastor must not be just the management and the caring of property and buildings. While that is a part of it, my job must also be about caring for the souls of all in the parish. In fact, this responsibility is not mine alone, it is shared by all of us! -Fr. Mike From Fr. As we draw near to the end of the liturgical year (Advent is coming soon), the Church is

putting these questions to each of us: "What do you see as the purpose of your life, of your existence in

this world? How seriously should we take the predictions of today's gospel about the end of this world?

Is it coming soon? And, more importantly, are we prepared?

The liturgical readings on these final Sundays of the Church calendar year are meant to bring

home to us the necessity of looking beyond our own immediate preoccupations, worries, troubles, and in-

terests, which are largely of selfish concern. All too often we focus on the present problems and chal-

lenges we face. What am I going to do about my kid acting up? How are we going to manage now that I

lost my job? How am I going to tell my parents about the ‘F’ I got on my test? How am I going to deal

with my illness? These readings challenge us to think ahead by bringing to focus the four end things -

death, judgment, heaven, and hell. Let’s hope that, through the mercy of God, the last one is not in our

future! We can do lots of good things in this life, but in the end, the only thing that saves us is God’s

mercy and forgiveness.

People sometimes criticize the Church for asking its members to reflect seriously on these “end

progress through life, we are drawing ever nearer to our true home, which is hopefully heaven and not

that other place. This should fill us with a greater longing to be with Christ – not just in the future but

right now.

Yes, as Catholics we are called to live in the present. We are called to be Jesus in our world today.

But our eyes should be set on the future. And, we should be preparing for that future by seeking the for-

giveness of God for our transgressions and trying to be Christ-like in our families and community.

There is another intriguing point in our gospel. Notice there are two important contrasting images.

trast, since the first will be destroyed, while not a single one of the last one will be harmed. I think the
