Gospel Passage
Luke 12:49-53
This gospel is about:
Following Jesus. “I have come to bring Division, Not
Peace.”
Focus: To boldly proclaim our faith, setting the Earth on fire with love for
Jesus.
Catechist Context: Like the prophets before him and the martyrs after him, Jesus knew
that living justly would put him at odds with many in the world.
When we follow Jesus’ example, we too may face opposition. God
offers us grace to be strong. With our eyes on Jesus, we embrace the
struggle.
Liturgical Season: Ordinary Time; use the green prayer cloth.
Additional Activities:
Set the World on Fire
Memory Game
You will need one chair for each child set up in a circle to lead this
activity.
This memory game will help the children see some of the different
ways we can do good works and help spread the love of God to
others. Provide the children with the following instruction,
personalizing as needed.
“We will all go around the circle and each person will say one thing
that he or she can do to set the world on fire with love for Jesus. We
will do this as we go around one by one, but when it is your turn, you
will also name all of the things your other classmates said before
you.”
If at any point the student cannot remember what was said before,
have the rest of class help him or her out. Alternatively, you could
restart the game from the child whose action was forgotten.

Gospel Passage
Luke 12:49-53
This gospel is about:
Following Jesus. “I have come to bring Division, Not
Peace.”
Talking Points: What does it mean to follow Jesus?
Discuss how sometimes following Jesus is hard because it means
we have to give up stuff we like.
How can we help one another to choose what is good, even when
it is hard?
But Jesus gives us all we need. He gives us LOVE and JOY and
good things too!
Craft Idea: The teacher can make different colors of footprints. One set of
footprints will lead the children that chose that particular color to
a pile of THINGS. The other colored set of foot prints will lead
those children to a CROSS and a BIBLE and if you have it, a picture
or doll of JESUS.
Then discuss with them about what following Jesus means in our
lives.
Then let each child choose which set of footprints they want to
follow.
If they follow the Bible path, each child can turn around and
smile. If they choose the wrong bath to the pile of things, they
can put on a sad face.
Materials 2 sets of different colored Footprints
Crayons
Other Information Using the footprints they can write or draw pictures on the feet on
ways they can follow Jesus.
