Online calling.

Christine Reimer, Publishing Alumna

Christine came to Langara wanting to work in book publishing or create book cover illustrations, but she discovered that the online world was her true calling.

After taking a few general arts courses, Christine chose Langara’s Publishing program for its diverse curriculum, which would allow her to develop editing and writing skills, and learn about design, typography, and production. But it was the web design and production courses that had the most impact.

These courses sparked a passion for website design that took her career in a new direction. After graduating in 2015, Christine went on to work at travel booking software company, Rezserve. Christine started at the company in a junior development position and now implements design and usability as Rezserve’s lead designer.

“In my day-to-day work I continue to use almost everything I learned, and I think that comes

from very thoughtful curriculum planning for the industry that grads are headed for.”

Christine credits some of her success to the attention and care that she received from Langara instructors and continues to remain in contact with them today.

“The instructors are a wealth of information and they want to see you succeed. Ask questions, ask for

advice, and work as hard as you can. The more you give to the program, the more you will get back.”

Making plays for a winning career.

Cat Bergmann, Business Administration Alumna

Cat always dreamt of working in the National Hockey League. After starting her post-secondary education in Ontario, Cat came to Langara to continue her studies, hoping to make this dream a reality.

Networking and building effective relationships are important skills for any business graduate and Cat learnt this firsthand. After enrolling in Langara’s Business Administration Program, a conversation with her instructor led to a unique opportunity to attend a networking event with the vice-president of branding at Canucks Sports & Entertainment.

The event inspired Cat to continue working towards her goal, giving her the confidence and drive to make her dream a reality. A classmate helped Cat to get her start in sports marketing, connecting her with a role at the Vancouver Whitecaps. In time, this role enabled Cat to score a game-winning interview with the Vancouver Canucks.

“My path to the Canucks demonstrates the importance of networking and sharing your passion with others. You never know who may be in a position to help you. Make the most of the connections that you build with students and instructors during your time at Langara, and take advantage of any extracurricular activities.”

The right framework.Banpreet Grewal, Applied Science for Engineering Student

Banpreet grew up in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, where he became interested in sciences. He always dreamt of studying abroad, and when he learned about the Applied Science for Engineering Program at Langara, he knew he had found the right place.

“The reputation and quality of education of Langara College compelled me to choose the program. It’s the only place that offers a program like this.”

The program worked for Banpreet because the courses were a natural extension of the math and sciences he learned in India. Designed for students who need time to transition into the heavy workload that the study of engineering requires, the program became a stepping stone for Banpreet to pursue his goal of becoming an engineer.

“My advice for students who are considering taking Applied Science for Engineering is to be prepared: it’s a challenging program! It is more practical than theoretical. You will have to study hard, but in the end, this program will offer you a better future, and give you good experience and knowledge.”

Connecting past with future.

Graeme Joseph, Arts & Science Alumnus

When Graeme, a member of the Gitxsan clan, was younger, he struggled in high school and didn’t believe he’d ever make it to university. His aunt, Shirley Joseph, believed otherwise. She was the Aboriginal Coordinator for Langara at the time, and encouraged him to enrol at Langara to begin his post-secondary studies. At the College, Graeme discovered his career path. Supported by his family, peers, and instructors, he developed the skills and confidence he needed to complete his studies at Langara and UBC.

Initially considering a career in criminology, Graeme was turned on to anthropology and archeology by Langara faculty who helped to guide his interests: “I always liked to imagine what it would have been like to live among our ancestors, and anthropology and archaeology provided me with a way of exploring and honouring Gitxsan history.”

“Like so many Aboriginal students, I really struggled in school and was

not academically ready for university study. The smaller classes, student community, and my family all supported me while at the college. Were it not for Langara, I never would have been able to attend UBC, graduate with a bachelor’s degree, and begin my career in higher education. Langara played a really important role in my success within university and in my career.”

Graeme has never forgotten about the incredible support he received. For the past decade, he has built his career on helping others by strengthening the services and supports available for Aboriginal students. Among his list of achievements is the UBC-Langara Aboriginal Transfer program, which builds upon the college transfer system by enabling Aboriginal students to benefit from the college experience and go on to complete a degree in their chosen area of study.

A helping hand.

Samantha Watson, Education Assistant Alumna

Samantha Watson discovered at an early age that she had a gift for working with others who needed a helping hand. As a Special Education Assistant in the British Columbia school system, Sam is helping special-needs students transition from high school into a training program or the workplace.

Contracting meningitis as a premature baby, Sam’s hearing loss and joint issues gave her the insight and compassionate edge that she used to tap into the needs of those who couldn’t always speak for themselves.

“In school, the teachers loved me because I would spend time with the students who couldn’t or wouldn’t communicate normally. I learned sign language from the Special Education Assistants who were assigned to my classmates, and would use it to help explain their lessons to them. I always knew how to put a smile on their faces by finding out what was important to them and connecting on their level. My teachers would often place me beside these classmates because they knew I’d help them to communicate.”

When she learned about the Education Assistant Program at Langara, she thought it was a perfect fit. After graduation, she began working right away in the New Westminster School District and as an Instructional Facilitator at Douglas College, before accepting a position with the Maple Ridge School District. As a behavioural interventionist, Samantha is using her education to help guide her kids to exhibit more socially-accepted behaviours, and in some cases, to learn how to advocate for themselves.

Enabling success.

Scoring goals on and off the field.

Olivia Rasulov, Nursing Alumna

Olivia was attracted to Langara’s Nursing degree program because of its reputation, but once there discovered that the vast number of clinical placement hours and international opportunities provided unparalleled hands-on experience.

Olivia wondered if her hearing impairment would hold her back, but Langara’s Disability Services was there to advocate on her behalf. They connected her with the necessary resources and specialized equipment, such as an amplified stethoscope, enabling her to be successful in the program.

“I could not complete this program successfully without Disability Services. They enabled me to have an individual instructor who provided me with one-on-one guidance in the clinical practicum settings – something that I did not expect to happen prior to coming to this program.”

Katie Inkster, Registered Massage Therapy Student

Falcons’ soccer player Katie Inkster was walking down the hall at Langara one day when, after seeing an ad for the Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) program, she unexpectedly discovered her dream career.

Researching further into the program, Katie realized it was the perfect fit. She knew first-hand about the healing properties of massage therapy; she was always the ‘designated’ massage therapist on all her sports teams. But she ran into a problem – some of the evening classes conflicted with soccer practices, forcing her to pick which dream to follow.

It wasn’t until she spoke with her coach about creating a balanced schedule that she was able to pursue both. This coupled with her support network, have helped her manage her busy life, and she remains thankful for her opportunity to work towards her career while playing the sport she loves.

“My classmates…are all especially supportive in helping me catch up and

share any coursework I’ve missed. And my Falcons teammates push me to focus on studying, plus I get to practise my massage techniques on them. Soccer and RMT just go hand-in-hand.”

Work hard. Play harder.ATHLETICS & INTRAMURALS

L ANGAR A FALCONSSince 1970, Langara’s Falcons have

attracted some of the top athletic talent

from within British Columbia and across

Canada. The Falcons compete in the Pacific

Western Athletic Association (PACWEST)

in basketball, golf, and soccer and are

consistently recognized as one of the top

athletic teams.

Over the past four decades, the Falcons

have racked up an impressive number of

achievements, including:

• 25 National Championship Titles

• 168 Provincial Championship Titles

• 360 PACWEST Provincial All-Stars

• 18 Provincial Aggregate Trophies

• 80 CCAA All-Canadians

• 28 CCAA Academic All-Canadians

INTRAMUR ALSInterested in recreational sports?

Intramurals might be for you! We’ve got

basketball, badminton, volleyball, tennis,

indoor soccer, and more. It’s a great way

to meet new friends, have fun, and get

some exercise. Check online for the gym

schedule at www.langara.ca/athletics.

BUILDING NATIONAL SUCCESS Men’s Basketball Head Coach Paul Eberhardt is looking forward to another strong

season. Since taking the helm of the program in 2012, the Falcons have been

perennial national contenders, making the CCAA National tournament three of

the past four seasons and winning a National Championship in 2013-2014. Coach

Eberhardt will look to a talented group of young players, led by PACWEST Rookie

of the Year Ravi Basra, to return the Falcons to the National stage once again.

This will be the first season for Coach Winston Brown as the head of the

women’s basketball program at the College. Last year the Falcons returned

to the Provincial Championships for the first time in five seasons and Coach

Brown is looking to return to the post season again in 2016-2017. The Falcons

will be led by their returning PACWEST 2nd team All-Star Carly Sangha.

The Falcons welcomed golf back to the athletic program this past season

after a 40-year hiatus. Langara partnered with Quilchena Golf and

Country Club in Richmond, BC to serve as the team’s training facility.

Coach Tom Flockhart is excited to see the growth and development of

the program as it heads into its second season of competition.
