Dear Friends,

A very blessed Moth-ers’ Day to all our moms! May the good-ness of the Lord be with you, and may the prayers of our Blessed Mother fill you with much love and joy.

It is appropriate today that our Second Reading and our Gospel speak of LOVE. Saint John calls us to “love one another, because love is of God.” Jesus com-mands us to “love one another” in the same way He has loved us. This is total and complete love; this is unconditional. For this we need to offer praise and thanks to God for our salvation and hope that comes to us through Jesus’ love.

So today, as we praise and thank our moms for their love and goodness to us, may we remember them in prayer, and may we pray that they will be rewarded in an even greater love! Father Fred

THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used—“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them” (Acts 10:44)—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John’s name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of command-ments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Mary appeared to three peas-ant children near Fatima, Portu-gal, six times between May 13 and October 13, 1917, and asked for prayers for world peace and an end to World War I, for sinners, and for the conversion of Russia. She en-trusted the children with three secrets regarding devotion to

her Immaculate Heart, a vision of hell, and a “bishop in white” shot by soldiers firing bullets and arrows. Many connect the third secret to the at-tempted assassination of St. Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981, and the pope thanked Mary for guiding the bullet and saving him. At the Vatican last October 13, Pope Francis stood before the stat-ue of Our Lady from the Fatima shrine and formally entrusted the world to Mary. © 2021, USCCB, Washington, DC. Allison Flamez

Question: What is the difference between a “Saint” and a “Blessed”?

Answer: The process of proclaiming someone as a saint in the Catholic Church has evolved over the course of many centuries. In the beginning, those honored as saints were almost exclusively biblical figures or martyrs. However, after the legalization of Christianity in the fourth century, new holy women and men came to be hon-ored as saints, and this was often done by popular acclaim or by the local bishop or abbot. It was Pope Gregory IX (who was pope from 1227 to 1241) who officially proclaimed that only the pope had the authority to add someone to the official list (the “canon”) of saints. This is the meaning of the word “canonization.” Today, the saint-making process includes several steps, including detailed studies of the person’s life and a recognition that they died as a martyr or lived a life of “heroic virtue.” Once someone is recognized as a mar-tyr or if a miracle is attributed to their intercession, they will be beatified and honored as “Blessed.” This means that they can be celebrated by Catholics in a particular country or region or by the members of certain reli-gious community. If another miracle occurs and is approved, then the “Blessed” is canonized and honored with the title “Saint,” meaning that they are now officially recognized as a universal model of holiness and an inter-cessor. ©LPi

Choosing to Love One Another

Love one another. The greatest commandment, the simplest com-mandment — and if you’ve ever loved anyone, you know it’s also the hardest. I’m man enough to admit it. I’ve seen one or two of those cheesy Hallmark movies that are especially popular around the holidays. Boy meets Girl. Boy and Girl encounter a cata-

strophic roadblock to their relationship — they’re coaches of rival high school volleyball teams, or he runs a dog kennel and she works at a feline rescue, so it could never, ever work out, right? But sprinkle a little movie magic over the whole situation and Boy and Girl find what Hallmark tells us is true love. I could make a list of all the things that are inaccu-rate about these movies, and something I would put right near the top — maybe even above the some-times-unbelievable storylines — is the idea that love is a feeling. See, I’m not sure if it’s accurate to call these mov-ies love stories. Attraction stories, sure. But if you’ve ever forgiven someone who’s hurt you, nursed a dy-ing parent, gotten up for an infant’s night feeding or let your kid have the last piece of cake, you know that real love is a verb. It’s something you do. And it is almost always a choice. Love one another. How often do we hear this? How often do we think about what it really means? How often do we take a moment to consider the ac-tion Jesus is asking us to take and the choice he is asking us to make? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS. ©LPi

The St. Mary-St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) food pantry continues to serve our neighbors thanks to generous donations from the parish, school, faith formation families, the community, and our members. Some amazing facts from our second quarter: ∗ Donations received: $9271 ∗ 680 people visiting the pantry, representing

1,924 family members ∗ 500 hours of service hours from 39 members and

volunteers

We also helped neighbors with rental assistance, cre-mation expenses, and utility bills. And thanks to your generous support, we were able to help two other SVdPs in our County support THEIR neighbors in need.

The pantry has even been spruced up with a new fence and an exterior paint job! For more information about SVdP, please call 925-937-2817 or email: [email protected]

Pictured here are Austin Pisciotto (L), Faith For-mation staff, and Barb Erickson, St. Mary SVdP President, holding a Thank You card to Faith Formation families who put together over 100 snack/personal hygiene kits to share with our neighbors in need.
