Good News Reflection Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord April 1, 2018
Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Ps 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23 Col 3:1-4 or 1 Cor 5:6b-8 John 20:1-9
God has surprises for you!
Celebrate! Today is the anniversary of the Great Surprise, and just as the first disciples were surprised to find the tomb empty, so too does God have some resurrection surpris-es in mind for you!
In Easter Sunday's Gospel reading, there's a lot of scurrying around and excitement and the reporting some amazing news that no one yet understands. Even though Jesus had given them advance notice that he would rise again after being put to death, God's plans took them by surprise. They did not expect a resurrection. They didn't understand that it was a necessary part of the Messiah's mission.
God's plans often take us by surprise. In so many situations of our lives, we don't understand that hard times are going to produce wonderful victories. We fail to realize that the empty tombs in our lives (the losses that we grieve) are beginnings of important new growth. We cannot imagine how Jesus is going to redeem bad times into great blessings.
We suffer through the hardships, just trying to cope, waiting for an opportunity to finally walk away from our crosses. Meanwhile, Jesus wants to give us an Easter morning because of the crosses.
How can we recognize the glory of God when we're depressed? How can we realize our resurrections when we're cursing our crosses? It's impossible!
To be the Easter people that we're supposed to be, we have to learn how to see the hope of resurrection in the pain of the cross. We have to trust that Jesus is always there, working a plan to redeem bad into good. We have to allow ourselves to be surprised by God.
Questions for Personal Reflection: What trials are you still enduring? What cross are you still carrying? Are you still being nailed for something you did not do? Which of your desires or dreams are dying? Ask the Father to use your sufferings for the glory of his kingdom. What new life is this creating for you?
Questions for Community Faith Sharing: What are some of the ways in which God has surprised you? How is this an experience of resurrection?

Reflexión de las Buenas Nuevas Misa de la Mañana de Pascua: La Resurrección del Señor Abril 1, 2018
Hechos 10, 34a. 37-43 Salmo 118, 1-2. 16-17. 22-23 Colosenses 3, 1-4 o 1 Corintios 5,6b-8 Juan 20, 1-9
¡Dios tiene sorpresas para ti! ¡Celebra!

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord – April 1
The bread of Angels becomes the bread of man; the bread of heaven does away with symbols. What a marvel! The poor, the servant and the humble may feed on their Lord (Saint Thomas Aquinas). “The risen Jesus is Himself ‘our hope’ (1Tim1:1). And this, our hope, is literally embodied with His glorified humanity in the Eucharist, which is the living memorial of his death and resurrection.” (Presbyterorium Ordinis, 5) “….Faith assures us that it is the selfsame risen Savior who now sacramentally offers His life-sacrifice for us…offers Himself for us in Communion as the bread of life, and who offers His perpetual presence for our Adoration.” (Saint Richard Foley, S.J.) Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Thank you for offering our Lord this special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks.

The Seniors Military Outreach Project
We are a small but energetic group of parish seniors, who have lunch together the third Thursday of every
month. We are interested in embarking on an outreach project by establishing written communications with
active duty military parishioners, serving their country away from home. Many of these seniors have experi-
enced firsthand, what it is like, serving or having a loved one stationed away from their church, friends and
family, in some far-flung areas. These seniors would like to become a conduit of religious communications
from St Mary’s, their parish, to these young people. A note, birthday card, a “Hi, how you doing?” inquiry or
a prayer card, letting them know someone from their hometown parish is thinking and praying for them.
In order to get this project underway, we are asking all of you parishioners who have a
family member and/or friends serving in the active duty military, away from Albany St
Mary’s Catholic Church, to please share their, names, service branch, rank, APO ad-
dress, e-mail addresses and any other information, like birthday etc. You can provide
their information to Al Barrios at [email protected] (phone 541-908-7149), Bill
Dudek at [email protected] (541-619-0234) or Avis Austed at
[email protected] (phone 503-890-2841).
This can be for any service member who
is serving away from home, be it in
another state, another country, or on the
sea.
Are you, a friend, or a family member interested in becoming Catholic?
We have Inquiry sessions where attendees can learn basics about Catholicism. If attendees are interested in
furthering the process, they will then attend the RCIA classes, which start with the school year.
Keep your eyes open for Inquiry Classes beginning in May.
Blood Drive Results Thank you for all your support with the blood drive last week. The team collected 33 units on a goal of 43. Every unit of blood has the potential to save three lives. Because of your continual sup-port and dedication to this lifesaving mission we have impacted 99 lives and for this I thank you.
The next scheduled blood drive is June 11th in the Gathering Space 12-5pm.
Notes from the Liturgist
Through the Empty Tomb our hearts are filled with JOY
We stopped saying or singing the “Alleluia” in our liturgical prayers during Lenten Season, but here again it’s back. We are joy-ous to proclaim: The Lord is risen, Alleluia! The resurrection of Jesus becomes the key to remove all the burdens to a life of unity with God. The large stone that covers Jesus’ tomb was rolled away, and the tomb was empty. This symbolizes that all roads to God are cleared. The resurrection of Jesus reconnects the relationship of humanity to God. The stone represents humanity’s slavery to sin. So, since it was rolled away, humankind is now free to encounter with God.
We are Easter people who believe that the Cross transformed all suffering and pain and the Resurrec-tion secured the promise of eternal life.
The empty tomb has a great significance for us. It is our sins that made the tomb where Jesus was buried. Our pride and selfishness served as the stone that sealed the dead Jesus in the tomb. Our vices and evil tendencies were the burial cloths that bound his dead body from head to foot.
Jesus died for us that we too may die to our sins. He was buried with our pride, selfishness, vices, and hopelessness. His victory over death therefore means for us victory over our sins.
The empty tomb means that our Lord Jesus Christ had taken away the powers that bind us forever to death, hopelessness and helplessness.
New life is assured for us – not only in the life after death, but in the HERE and NOW. With the Risen Lord, we can all begin anew. Easter is not only an event that happened some 2000 years ago, but it is ongoing in the here and now. Each of us can rise to new life in Him.
Easter is, therefore, all about a new beginning. We begin afresh. The facts of life tell us that nothing comes to an end, rather endings signify a new beginning. The Holy Week doesn’t end on Good Friday (time of sorrow) but it will ‘end’ on the day of Resurrection (time of joy).
According to the sciences: Physics teaches us that energy is never lost or destroyed but only trans-formed; Biology opens our eyes to the reality of life cycles that govern the world of nature. With the Resur-rection of Jesus, we discovered that life continues even after earthly death.
It is a reminder to us to make new beginnings. Where we have failed, there we begin again. Life expe-riences have emboldened our resolve to try and begin again. “True failure is not to try to begin anew and that the experience of failure is but a road and lesson toward success.” With the Risen Lord accompanying us in our earthly daily pilgrimage, why then can we not succeed? If the victorious Risen Lord is within us, then, we can only look forward to victory amidst the experience of our downfall.
There is nothing in the past, however bad, sad, sinful, shameful, or painful, that could hinder us from breaking out into a better future, opening us into a new beginning!
Whenever we do an act of kindness, forgive someone who has wronged us, initiate reconciliation and make peace; whenever we give and share our blessings to others, we become like the disciples going away quickly from the empty tomb to meet with the Risen Lord.
My dear friends, yes, indeed through the empty tomb of Jesus our hearts are filled with joy. Happy Easter to one and all!

Holy Family Prayer Program
Albany Knights of Columbus Council 1577 is sponsoring a family prayer program called the Holy Family Prayer. The intent of the program is to get families to pray together, focusing on the love and support of the Holy Family. A small statue and a smaller photo icon will rotate among the parish families on a two week basis.
If you are interested in having one of the icons, contact Stuart Conser 541.619.8101 or [email protected] or Jon Keefer at [email protected] . If you have a preference between the statue or photo, let them know. The icons will be exchanged at the end of mass on the appropriate weekend.
Class Change
ACES will resume Tuesday, April 3rd.
Schedule will be handed out then for the remaining classes.
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, Jesus tells us to give special care to those who are most in need. He reminds us of our Christian duty to listen closely to those who often go unheard and to help those most vulnerable.
Our 40 Day Lenten journey ends now but the poor and vulnerable will continue to need our help … remember to return your CRS Rice Bowl, with cash or check, in April so Catholic Relief Services may continue this help here in America as well as all over the world. God Bless You!
