Forging Ahead: Civil Rights Stories & SongA weekend of sharing civil rights stories from Birmingham’s past with special, Jewish involvement.
The annual commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birth has become more than simply another national holiday –customarily marked by sales at retailers, a Monday off from work or school, and typically-scripted public proclamations. Now, Dr. King’s birthday has stimulated a renewed civic spirit, in the mold of his own challenge to America to transform oppression into opportunity, and to bring the many hands of a diverse nation together into a colorblind commitment to service. Communities work together on the Monday of Dr. King’s birthday celebration, and build parks, teach children, and transform neighborhoods. And, more…
This year, Dr. King’s birthday commemoration will achieve just that, here in our own Birmingham Jewish community, a place significantly impacted by the struggles and the events of Dr. King’s own history. This month, Temple Emanu-El teams with Temple Beth-El and the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center, to present: this amazing event. On Friday evening, January 12, at Temple Emanu-El, we will present: The Context; Circa 1950’s Civil Rights and the Jewish Community, as part of our Erev Shabbat celebration. And, on Saturday evening, January 13 at Temple Beth-El, we will present: The Bombings: Temple Beth-El and 16th Street Baptist Church. We are excited to be featuring Neshama Carlebach, daughter of the famed Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, and an esteemed folk singer in her own right, and Birmingham’s own Dr. Pamela King, Professor of History at UAB, and a prolific writer on the theme of our local civil rights history.
A team of leaders from our local organizations has been working for six months to design and present this weekend of songs and stories. Plan to join with our synagogue communities, and our wider community, to make Dr. King’s birthday celebration a truly insightful journey through our Birmingham and Jewish communities’ instrumental roles in bringing civil rights transformation to America.

D.I.S.C.O.S' mission is to help students develop the creative tools they need to explore and document their worlds. Working through Woodlawn area schools and through after-school and summer programs, they help students learn how to observe, analyze and document their experiences. Woodlawn Writers Corps is a collective of 2nd graders-8th graders at Oliver Elementary, Avondale Elementary and Putnam Middle School. The students in the Corps meet weekly thoughout the school year for Core-aligned poetry workshops, during which they explore how poetry and language intersect with history, science, math and the arts. The writing workshops are designed to be challenging and fun, with the main goal of stegnthening the students' writing skills, intensifying their intellectual habits and giving them the creative tools they need to explore and document their worlds.

WE MUST BUILD OUR FUTURE…The Jewish future of Alabama is at stake! Many of our Alabama congregations have dwindled,
resulting in mergers or termination. Even in Birmingham, our Temple membership grows older. Our children often leave the state for education and do not return. We CAN and MUST intervene to
change this trend. We are very fortunate. Some of the best and brightest Jewish students have been recruited to attend the University of Alabama. Currently there are about 900 students at UA that identify themselves as being Jewish. Approximately 100 come together for Shabbat dinner every week at Hillel. They love being part of the Jewish community there, and LOVE IT here in Alabama. Although the University
recruited them heavily to come, we as a community have not reached out, and it is OUR JOB to let them know we want and need them here after graduation.
The future is bright, but we need YOU to help. Could you be a “family friend” inviting a Jewish student to Birmingham for dinner once or twice a year, or could you join them in Tuscaloosa to take them out? Do you or your employer have an opportunity for a student to be a summer intern? (does not need to be a Jewish business). Can you provide a shadowing opportunity for a day or more, maybe once a week during the semester, or for a couple of weeks in January or May? We are connecting students with these opportunities. Please let us know how you and your business can help. This is VITAL to
our future; we need YOU! Please e-mail Hillel Connections to Alabama at [email protected]
DUES REMINDER: Please make sure you
have returned your 2018 Annual Commitment form. Everyone must have a
new one on file.
Georgia Ann Oleinick will be called to the Torah on Saturday, January 13th. Georgia Ann is the daughter of Virginia and Jason Oleinick and sister to Jackson. She is a 7th grade student at Liberty Park Middle School. As a member of the LPMS symphonic band, she plays in the percussion ensemble. She also plays on the LPMS volleyball team. Georgia Ann enjoys sports and anything involving Auburn football. She has worked hard in preparation for this major life cycle event. She is excited to share this experience with her family and friends.

CONDOLENCES TO... the family of Mackie Horowitz who passed away suddenly on December 9, 2017.
She is survived by husband, Sherman Horowitz, her children, grandchildren, family and friends. We are deeply saddened by this sudden loss and are grateful for Mackie's loveand devotion to Temple Emanu-El. She served our congregation as Temple President, Sisterhood President and guided our worship band through her love of Jewish music.
May Mackie rest in peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew her. MayGod comfort these mourners among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Hillel Shabbat Program: January 19th
Join us for a very special Shabbat to learn:
--- Info about the growth in number of Univ. of AL Jewish students (approx. 900) attending and creating community together celebrating Shabbat, and other activities together.
--- Expansion of the current Hillel building needed to accommodate the large numbers of students coming for Shabbat dinners , holiday celebrations, and Sunday brunch (90-130/event).
--- Importance of building members for the future of our Temple Emanu-El. These students LOVE Alabama, and already connect with their Jewish community. They are a greeat resource for our future!
Come learn about Jewish life at Univ of AL, hear from some prior Temple Emanu-El students now at UA, and their involvement on campus and at Hillel. Learn about the new Hillel Connections program that will be a mechanism to benefit our students AND attract them to our Jewish communities; come see how you can help! Share an Oneg with us. Visit hillel.ua.edu to learn more.

Youth & Education14
Y&E: Our Teens Life Stories Program Our tradition teaches: "With age comes wisdom, and length of days brings understanding." This year our teens spend one night a month at Brookdale Senior Living building relationships with Jewish residents. It has been a remarkable opportunity for both the students and the seniors to get to know each other, share stories and wisdom and build friendships. Over the course of the year the students and the seniors participate in a number of activities, and learning. It is so awesome to watch the teens and the seniors adore one another. On any given Wednesday evening that we are at Brookdale you’ll hear the students and their senior friends singing songs, taking selfies and believe it or not swapping cell phone numbers! A central aspect of the program is capturing the life stories of their new friends. The students partner with a senior friend, prepare questions focused on childhood, school life, and what it was like growing up as a teen. The teens use the StoryCorps app to interview and record amazing stories and experiences. For example you’ll hear stories about dating, first jobs, describing their homes, being Jewish in the South and best friends. The stories will be presented and shared at a festive celebration at the end of the year. We are grateful for CJFS, our partner in this program. Each month the students are picked up by the CJFS Buzz a Bus, and we have a delicious dinner together and then share stories, and engage in creative projects. This experience is truly amazing. What a blessing! I look forward to sharing the interviews and life stories with our Temple family at the end of this year!-Rabbi Laila Haas

Shabbat Shirah, The Sabbath of Song
January 26, 2017 at 5:40pmA performance of the WORLD PREMIERE of
“The Secret Exit: Three Songs for Piano and Clarinet” written by composer Lori Laitman performed by our own temple
and High-Holy Day choir member, Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk
commissioned by the University of Alabama for soprano Kristine
Hurst-Wajszczuk and clarinetist Denise Gainey
Hear composer Lori Laitman tell of her process writing a work based on
Holocaust poetry written by Nelly Sachs, a German Jewish poet who escaped the Nazis by fleeing to Sweden in 1940.
Sachs became widely known for her poems about the Holocaust, and in 1966, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Lori Laitman is a renowned composer, described by Fanfare Magazine as "one of the most talented and intriguing of living composers". She has composed multiple operas and choral works, and over 250 songs, setting texts by classical and contemporary poets (including those who perished in the Holocaust).
Her music is widely performed, inter- nationally and throughout the U.S., and has generated substantial critical
acclaim. The Journal of Singing wrote ‚"It is difficult to think of anyone before the public today who equals her exceptional gifts for embracing a poetic text and giving it new and deeper life through music."
