Semi-formal and formal dresses will be available for pre- view from 9:45-10:15 a.m. After the fashion show, girls will have the opportunity to try on dresses and then place a silent bid on their favorite dress(es). The cost to attend the event is $3.00/person, which includes a continental brunch. According to PTSA co-chairs for the fashion show/dress auction, Nancy Pruneski and Sue Yablonski, “it will be a morning of glitz, glam and goodwill” for mothers and daughters to enjoy together and find some great bargains on formal- wear. The glitz will be everywhere as the Commons is transformed into a red and sliver showcase for the many dresses to be previewed, modeled and auctioned. The glam will, of course, be provided by the Girls of Green and PTSA student members as they model some of their favorite dress- es of the approximately 200 long and short, formal and semi-formal dresses the com- mittee hopes to collect. The goodwill comes from the fact that all proceeds from the dress auction will be donated to a yet-to-be- determined charity. The 2009 dress auction raised just over $1000, which was donated to the Battered Women’s Shelter. In addi- tion, many of the dresses not sold will be donated to an organization, such as Altru- sa, that provides formal dresses to inner- city girls who do not have the means to purchase a dress for their prom. The donor can choose to receive 50% of the sale of the dress or make a total donation of the sale. They also have the option to donate the dress if it is not sold or have it returned. Dresses can be delivered to Maggie Lenart, GHS main office secre- tary, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. There is a form that must be filled out when the dress is dropped off. GHS students can also deliver dresses to Mrs. Megan Miller in Room 154 prior to their first block class. Arrangements for dress dona- tions can also be made through Nancy Pruneski, 896-3039 or [email protected] and Sue Yablonski, 330-896-4910 or [email protected]. They especially welcome donations from boutiques and consignment shops. This is the fourth time the PTSA and Girls of Green have teamed up for this event. G of G advisors Marilyn Ruff- Leonard and Megan Miller will oversee the girls as they help on various committees including refreshments, decorations, and publicity that will be chaired by PTSA volun- teers. Event organizers are looking to add to the morning’s glitz and glam by bringing in some local jewelry and cosmetic entre- preneurs, as well as having seamstresses available to make arrangements if altera- tions are needed. The PTSA and Girls of Green hope you will mark your calendar, gather up and donate those previously worn dresses, and then come to GHS on January 22nd and Say Yes to a “New” Dress.

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES! Parent and school collaboration is an essential component to the success of a student, especially in high school. Adolescence brings about many physical, cognitive, social, and emotional changes. Research shows that the level of parent involvement and a collaborative relationship with school directly affects student achievement. This year at Green High, the staff and administration have committed ourselves to reinvigorating the relationship we have with our students’ families. We would like to encourage our parents to attend parent teacher conferences and offer a bit of advice as to how to make the most out of the event.

1. Prior to coming to the conference, check ProgressBook and read the teacher’s syllabus. You

will have a better picture of your student’s effort, work habits, quiz and test scores in that particular class, and the expectations of the teacher. Write down questions that you have.

With that information, you can make the conference specific to your child’s area of strengths and ask for recommendation on how to improve in areas of difficulty.

2. Contact the teacher prior to the conference if you have a specific question or area of concern or interest that you would like to address. In doing so, the teacher will have the opportunity to do the necessary research to answer your questions and make the most of the time.

3. Bring your child with you. High school students should be involved in the setting of individual learning goals. Students have the best knowledge of their understanding/application/motivation for the class. Teachers can then give specific suggestions to both the student and parents. Create a plan together to support the improvement of your child.

4. Don’t think conference night is the only time we are available to meet. Parents can contact teachers anytime, through phone or email. We welcome the communication. Feel free to schedule conferences with counselors and administrators on conference nights, too. We are available to meet with you.

Conferences are scheduled this year at the high school on November 4th, February 17th, and April 7th from 5 PM until

8 PM. Parents can use our online scheduler to make appointments on conference evenings, on our website www.greenlocalschools.org/ghs. Do not underestimate how

valuable you are in helping your child succeed. When teachers and parents come together to advocate for students, the results are astonishing. Conferences not only offer the opportunity to communicate about student progress and achievements, but they provide educators with the chance to gain insight on their students from the true experts --- you!

A big THANK YOU to all of the seniors and students who volunteered their time to

ture practice.

PSEO

The Post-Secondary Educational Option Program is an opportunity for high school students to enrich their

high school curriculum by attending college while still in high school. Attendance at an information session

with a high school counselor is a required first step to participation. During this school year, information

meetings regarding the guidelines for PSEO will be held at every conference night during the school year.

Sessions will be held on the hour at 5, 6, and 7pm on these evenings. Parent and student attendance is re-

quired at one of these meetings in order to participate. The next conference date for the high school is

November 4. Any student considering PSEO for 2011-12 should consider taking the ACT or SAT this winter

because the deadlines for fall participation will be in the spring.

Seniors Please follow the news posted on the guidance page of the GHS website for up to date reminders. Beginning

the week of September 20th, counselors began meeting with students planning to graduate in June of 2011.

These meetings with seniors will include a review of each senior’s transcript and his/her post-graduation

plans. A summary of each senior’s graduation checklist and plans was mailed to parents after these meetings

occurred.

Financial Aid Night

GHS will host a financial aid information night for parents of seniors. A local financial aid officer from KSU

Stark will present information about the financial aid process including how to complete the FAFSA (Free Ap-

plication for Federal Student Aid), definitions of various loan programs, and grant and scholarship opportuni-

ties. This event will be held in Room 128 on January 20, 2011 from 7 to 8:30 pm.

For the second time in four years, Green schools have been named the Academic State Champ of Ohio by the Buckeye Association

of School Administrators. The district has been awarded the Dr. Bernard L. ''Barney'' Dunnan Award for demonstrating significant

student achievement in the School Online Assessment Report (SOAR). The assessment measures a district's academic growth

across the core subjects of math, reading, science and social studies in multiple grade levels. The award was started in 2007. Su-

perintendent Michael Nutter said Green was best among 435 eligible districts in the state.

We’ve all heard the benefits of reading to our children when they are young. Children who are read to and who have access to a multitude of books are more likely to come to school reading-ready. We know, too, that children in the early grades, when literacy-building is at the forefront, require continued immersion in varied texts to grow as readers.

One aspect of literacy that is just as important as early reading, however, is continued growth toward the higher-level reading skills that our high school students will need to be successful in college. Students who do not score at least a 21 on the reading portion of the College ACT are likely to struggle with the complex texts they will encounter in col-lege. In the Language Arts department at GHS, we stress to our students that reading still matters and that they are still growing as readers.

Though the majority of our students come to high school literate in the traditional sense of the word, we aim to make sure that our students leave GHS as “college-ready” readers. Just as parents play an essential role in the development of early literacy, parents can continue their vital support as their children prepare for college and as they work toward achieving college-level literacy.

What can parents do to help teens continue to grow as readers?

1. Encourage reading and discussion of newspapers, magazines, or other media that come into the house. Focus

specifically on the editorial page where writing is generally of a higher level and can promote critical thinking on important issues. And what teen doesn’t like to argue?

2. Share your reading interests with your teen. Find a college-level novel to read together or consider reading along with one of your teen’s assigned texts. Discuss and evaluate the text together.

3. Give books or book store gift-cards as gifts or rewards for grades or other positive behaviors.

4. Limit passive screen time. When your teen does spend time with electronics, encourage activities that are interac-tive and require higher-level reading.

5. Make sure your teen reads (for school or otherwise) in a quiet environment with minimal distractions. Encourage your teen to take notes, highlight, or “sticky note” the books they read.

6. Teachers often provide study guides, graphic organizers or other materials intended to help students “process”

assigned reading. Watch to make sure that your student uses these reading comprehension builders.

7. Don’t forget non-fiction! Even reluctant readers can often become engrossed in non-fiction books about things they are already interested in.

8. Consider buying an ACT test guide. These guides include practice tests for all sections of the ACT, including read-ing.

9. If your teen is struggling with school-related reading, do NOT hesitate to contact your child’s teachers to discuss subject-specific strategies that might help your teen become a more skilled reader.

Your child’s success is our success. Do not hesitate to contact GHS Language Arts department chairperson, Ms. Jamie Lormeau, with your questions or concerns regarding our program.

Tired of hearing the GHS news via hearsay? Want to learn the specifics about important topics directly from the GHS Administration and their invit-ed guests? Then, come and join other GHS parents in an informal setting in the GHS Commons from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. for a series of three separate and distinct "coffee clutch" discussions. During the 2010 - 2011 school year, GHS Principal, Mrs. Cindy Brown, will help facilitate three question and answer sessions about topics of interest to YOU, the parents. Our first session will be on Monday, November 15th when Mrs. Malia Miller from our Guidance Department will help parents with high school students of all ages navigate the important deadlines and course selections in the college plan-ning process. On Tuesday, February 15th, during the National PTA's celebration of Take Your Family to School week, the GHS PTSA will sponsor the return of the

well-received "10 Things I Wish I Had Known Before Entering GHS" session with 8th, 9th and 10th grade parents. Roundtable discussions with GHS PTSA par-ents dialoguing with newer parents about the truths and fables of high school will stimulate meaty con-versations. Look for the third topic to touch upon the social is-sues challenging teens. Monday, April 18th will be the night of our last Coffee Clutch. If you have a spe-cific topic of interest that you think would benefit the greater good, please suggest it to either Natalie Weinsz ([email protected]) or Cindy Brown ([email protected]) as soon as pos-sible so planning can beginning. Bring a friend and get informed! Looking forward to seeing you in the GHS Commons on November 15th at 7:00 PM to kick off this new series of exchanges with the administration-in-the-know supporting you as parents!

We will gladly include you on our invitation list! E-mail your name(s) and complete address to [email protected] with subject line

The Green High School Art Department has been very proud over the years to see so many talented students graduate and pursue art careers. We have former students in every area of the professional art world. These art careers include Graphic Design, Computer Animation, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Architecture and Medical Illustration. An art career may conjure the image of a “starving artist,” but the professional art world offers many concrete opportunities for col-lege/art school graduates to be successful. After all, we live in a visual world. Everything we touch, and everything we see has been planned, scrutinized and designed by an artist. Daniel Pink, author of A Whole New Mind, believes that the future will not be an age of left-brained thinkers as it has been in the past. Rather, the future belongs to those individuals with creative right-brained qualities. The successful will be those who are inventive, empathic, and able to construct meaning. Parents of creative children often have many questions. How can my child and I know that an art career is the right choice? What type of career should my child choose? How does my child prepare in high school to study art on the college level? Where should my student study art? During the remainder of the year, the Green High School Art Department will answer these questions in a four part series featured in The Bulldog Bite. Part I: How do I know that an art career is right for my child? First of all, don’t discourage your child from becoming a profes-sional artist. Pursuing a career in art doesn’t have to lead to perpet-ual unemployment. Given the vastness of the professional art

world, it is possible to combine your child’s strengths into a reward-ing and profitable career. An art career might be a good fit for your child if he or she

· has love of art.

· is creative.

· is passionate about drawing and/

or constructing.

· prefers to create with his or her

hands.

· possesses an enthusiasm for

fashion, altering images on the

computer, or taking photographs.

· is a problem solver.

· is able invent alternative solutions.

· can focus for long periods of time on a creative activity.

· has a burning desire to create.

Any one of these characteristics may mean your child has a creative

future. So how do you know? Look to your child for the answer.

Artists not only demonstrate an aptitude in art, but also can feel the

artist inside themselves. Your job is to help your child find his or

her way to channel that passion into a rewarding professional art

career. In the next Bulldog Bite, the GHS Art Department will

offer advice on how to research and learn about the many art ca-

reers.

How can I get help for my son or daughter that needs extra help in math? It’s a common question asked to the high school math teachers and guidance counselors. Many parents are not able to help their son or daughter and feel helpless. The high school math teachers have some suggestions.

Ask the teacher if your son or daughter is ask-ing questions and getting help from the teacher in class. If not, there might be an easy remedy. If getting help in class is not enough, many teachers offer help for students that may need 15-20 minutes every so often before or after school.

Several teachers have their own website where students can go for extra practice and help.

Many of the math textbooks have online sup-port. If your student needs to learn how to ac-cess the online support, their teacher can give

them the information they need for their partic-ular textbook. Included is an electronic version of the textbook and extra practice.

Math tutoring is offered during every lunch peri-od for all GHS students. Math teachers are on duty in room 158 near the Commons, and any student can get help during that time from the teacher on duty.

Members of the National Honor Society are will-ing to help other students during the school day. Contact the guidance office for more infor-mation.

Each of these services is provided at no cost for stu-dents. In most cases, taking advantage of the help of-fered by the teachers and students at the high school is very beneficial for students. If your son or daughter needs intensive help, in addition to the help provided by the school, a private tutor might be needed.

DID YOU KNOW THAT? Daily student announcements are available on the

GHS web site. Click on the Information/Student Resources tab to find out what’s happening at GHS.
