And for a beer guy this is the busy season. I did manage to squeeze in a short vacation though to Los Angeles with my wife Vicki, and son Carter. Felt like a fish out of water till we hit Universal Studios, La Brea Tar pits and Muscle Beach. We treated Universal Studios like an athlete goes about training. We ponied up and kicked butt riding several rides multiple times. That VIP pass gets you right to the front of the line. I haven't felt that good since I finally got an E-Z tag last year!!! Muscle Beach in Venice made we want to rip my shirt off and start "Pumping some Iron' but Carter changed my mind as did the police woman on duty! The most interesting stop on the trip was the La Brea Tar Pits. I grew up reading about these pits and the prehistoric animals that have been found in its oily trap. Over 100,000 woolly mammoths, saber tooth cats, (the real name for saber yoothed tigers), mastodons, prehistoric horses, dire wolves and many other critters met their deaths in these sticky petroleum pits. You could call this the real bottom of the food chain. This is really where hunters became the hunted! Even though I was not hunting discovering LA was quite and adventure. Now for more successful hunts from chapter members ... Tommy Fogle was after a record Texas Dall with a crossbow. He checked with the SCI Record book to see what it would take to qualify. After checking with a couple of ranches, he talked to a friend at Circle B Outfitters in Crockett, Texas. He said he had one or two that might be good enough. After looking at the rams they picked out what they thought would be the biggest one and planned a stalk. After about 5 hours Tommy finally got the shot. If measurements stand, he will be # 2 SCI with crossbow. All was captured on film by CSE Outdoors TV. Congratulations on such an accomplishment! Craig Phillips and Shirley Horan had the perfect safari (almost) recently with Keith Wright, owner of Didimala Safaris in Namibia. Check out these measurements for these spectacular animals: gemsbok – 43”, springbok – 17.5”, Damara dik-dik – 3.5”; wow!!! Craig and Shirley both highly recommend. They say it rates as one of their favorite safaris ever out of fifteen!! Imagine several million acres of wild hunting pleasure and you have Didimala Safaris. Hear more about this hunt in Craig's October Lions’ Pride hunting report. Duke Walton just returned from his first South African safari. He is a man on fire. He hunted with PH and outfitter Louis Loots of Ka Maota Safaris. Awesome time with some great animals. More details in the next issue. Duke also I LOVE TO HUNT. HHARE YOU READY FOR SOME FUNDRAISING? Our 13th Annual Fundraiser and Banquet takes place this month on August 29th and I hope most of you are planning to attend. Bill Pullen and the rest of the Banquet committee have put together some great items for your bidding pleasure and raffle chances. Back this year: a white tail fawn from Lossen Whitetails. Sired once again by the unbelievable brute of a white tail Problem Child, this auction is sure to catch fire and cause quite a buzz in the banquet hall. Two years ago it set a record!

Why do we do it all? So we can raise money for our annual projects promoting hunting, education and conservation. This annual event is our primary source of revenue supporting events like our just completed 5th Annual FREE Youth Hunter Education Class, Sensory Safari, donations to TPWD and other local and national needs. We’ve also contributed to the Rifa Conservation Camp in Zimbabwe and Mozambique’s Zumbo Water Project in Africa this past year.

There’s still time to get your tickets before all the seats are sold. Visit our Fundraiser page at www.scihouston.org where you find constantly updated donation listings with pictures, website links and online ticket purchase page. Or you can mail the form found on page 15. And if you’d like to help ro make a late donation contact our Banquet Chair Bill Pullen, or please feel free to contact me at any time with any question, comments or concerns – I’m looking forward to seeing everyone this year.

Until then, Happy Hunting!

acquired a full donation for our youth hunter's safety class- a seven-day safari for 5 animals for a lucky father son or daughter or mother- daughter or son hunt. What a deal.

John Colglazier just returned from his safari quest in Ethiopia. He has a full-length article on the subject that gives this adventure more justice. He hunted with Dimitri and Zafira Assimacopolus of Libah Safaris. Imagine hunting mountain nyala on donkey back and small horses in 9000 ft. altitude traveling one foot winding trails. The plot thickens. Check out John's upcoming article on more details. He took a fine mountain nyala, a 13½-inch Menilik’s bushbuck and a giant forest hog - hogzilla!!! What an adventure- when I grow up I want to be just like John!! Once again, a report is forthcoming in the October issue of this newsletter.

“The Band Of Brothers” Arnold Rodriguez, new member David Muti, Tim Gonzales, and Dallas friend David Britt, hunted with Gerard Arasmus of Sumsare Safaris and Honnes Ells of Limcroma Safaris. This was Tim's first hunt. Tim's main mission was to video Arnold, and the two David's hunting leopard with dogs in a mountainous region in Namibia. All three were successful on three awesome leopards. Tim got into the action with his first African animal, a fine blue wildebeest. You can see the hunt on future CSE Outdoors TV episodes on channel 55 in Houston. Tim also has a feature upcoming article. No doubt he now has the Africa bug!!!

Jimmy Fernandez went offshore from Matagorda about 40 miles and had a very good day. It was very rough on the way out, but it got better as the day progressed with the biggest snapper, 19 lbs. If Jimmy isn't hunting he's fishing!!

Keep those hunting reports coming.I will end with another video review for your hunting

pleasure. Montarias Extremena is a film produced in Spain by the leading producer of highest quality hunting films in Europe. It has NO English language narrative NOR subtitles. Outdoor Visions proudly presents it based on the excellent, realistic, graphic portrayal of hunting big game in Spain. This will play on North American DVD players. Driven hunts in Spain for wild boar, big stags, fallow deer, fox, and whatever else is driven past the hunters. Truly wild action!! A unique hunting experience rich in tradition. Many, many animals taken. Approx. 60 minutes. Spanish DVD. Hey, it's different, but entertaining and unique in it's own right. See more on this production along with several companion releases at www.outdoorvisions.com.

Until next time, remember, “If your gonna shoot — pull the trigger!!”

Kent Robinson, the 'Beer & Deer Guy', is Chapter Vice-President, Corporate Sponsor Chair and Hunting Show co-Chair. In his spare time he enjoys helping others plan hunting adventures from Texas to Africa and assisting his friend, Bob Harper of Outdoor Visions, a hunting video and book retailer. You can send your hunting reports, news, trophy photos and comments to [email protected].

IIIN THE LAST YOUTH HUNTER FORUM my friend Carter Robinson wrote about his Black Hawaiian Ram hunt. Well, somehow we did not get to hunt together. I went on a similar trip to the Serengeti Ranch. I was hunting a scimitar horned oryx, and being filmed by my father’s TV show, CSE Outdoors.

The eventful day began with a quick breakfast of powdered doughnuts and jerky, and then we were off. My Father, Mr. Shane and Blake Kaiser, Mr. Scott McLemore and myself, all piled into our buggy, and went out looking for the beast that is the scimitar horned oryx.

It wasn’t long, maybe 3 hours before we spotted a huge oryx, and I lined up a shot. I slowly squeezed the trigger, and the bullet landed EXACTLY where I wanted to, but to my surprise, after he dropped to his knees, he stood back up! All we saw was the backside of an oryx disappearing in the thick brush. I shoot a single shot .243 and was re-loading as fast as possible I turned and looked at my dad and asked if I missed, even though I know I hadn’t, our entire hunting party went to find the blood trail.

We tracked the oryx until lunch. Eventually, Mr. Dee broke out the dogs. He followed the blood, and we took our Honda Big Red out looking for the wounded oryx. Maybe 15 minutes later, we heard a loud bang, and shortly afterwards, Mr. Dee called and said he’d shot the oryx. But there was a catch. It was still alive.

Even though being shot twice, it STILL ran off. We spotted the animal once again and Mr. Shane and I ended this incredible hunt. After the dust settled, my heart was still beating a mile a minute, and I was still slightly shaking. The oryx are extremely tough. I would have obviously preferred a one shot one kill hunt and do everything possible to make sure that happens. But, it was very exciting and a crazy experience. Everyone loves a good hunt, so it’s worth mentioning dove season begins September 1st. So… go out and practice on the skeet range and hopefully we can share some good dove hunting stories. Please join our Young Hunters Club of The Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of SCI. See everyone at the banquet!

The Young Hunters Club is an extension of our Chapter’s Youth Membership, available to all the young outdoors men and women out there ages 18 and under. We have number of special programs (including this column every issue) geared toward our youth with the goal of getting our youngsters involved, outdoors and preserving our hunting legacy! Membership is only $15 per year or a 3-year membership for $35.

KERRY’S CORNERby Kerry O’Day

KERRY’S CORNERby Kerry O’Day

I HAD A CUSTOMER come in the shop last week to pick up his old Remington 700, which I had rebarreled for him. He told me that he had bought the rifle new 40 years ago. It was the only rifle he owned and had shot everything from pronghorn antelope to elk and even a moose. The rifle was chambered in 270 Winchester, and the customer has shot the rifle enough to know the gun very well. He said “it was like a part of him.” “I just hope it shoots as well now as it did before.” It’s not often that a hunter will shoot a rifle enough to wear out the barrel, but he did! I thought to myself, “didn’t he know that he needed a bigger caliber for hunting elk and moose?” Wouldn’t a smaller caliber like a 25-06 or a 257 Weatherby work better for the long range shots needed for hunting pronghorn antelope? Well, I thought about it some and decided the customer with the 270 was right. Yes, a .338 might hold a small advantage for shooting larger elk and moose. Or a .257 Weatherby would shoot a little flatter for long range shooting which is needed for the open plains. But (and now comes the big but) there is no replacement for putting the bullet in the right place. I would much prefer to have a shooter know how to shoot his rifle and be able to place the bullet where it needs to be, than a shooter who carries a rifle that is too big for him to shoot well. A 270 Winchester has plenty of foot pounds of energy to kill an elk at 200 yards. The 270 caliber will also shoot flat enough to handle long 400 or even 500 yard shots. If you use one of the new breed of bullets from Barnes, Swift or Nosler, the 270 Winchester will act like a much bigger or flatter shooting round than it really is. If you hand- load a bullet like the Swift Scirocco, you can make a 270 shoot 2 or 3 inches flatter at 300 yards than you could with a Remington Core-Lock. The Scirocco Bullet is longer than a normal bullet so the ballistic coefficient is way up there when compared to a standard hunting bullet. What all this means is that the Scirocco bullet will cut the air and buck the wind better so it shoots flatter. On the other end, a Barnes Triple Shock will act like a much bigger bullet. The Barnes TSB bullet will expand larger and hold its weight better than any bullet I have ever tested. If a normal bullet in a 270 expands to a 30 caliber and retains 60% of its weight, it is considered to be a good bullet. Most Barnes TSB bullets will expand to more than twice their original size and will retain 100% of the original bullet weight. The other advantage a one-rifle shooter has is that he knows his rifle. The trigger pull is the same all the time. The scope is the same and the stock fits right every time. It’s like driving the same pick-up truck, or being married to the same girl for ten years. You know all the good points and all the bad points, and how to make them all work to your advantage. Sure it is fun to have all the new toys and in most cases a shooter needs three rifles to cover all the different types of hunting there is. I know both Bill Olsen and Harold Gunn are great fans of the 30-06 and I agree with them that this is a wonderful caliber, but I also know that they both have 22-250’s for hunting the little critters and Harold uses a 375 H&H or a 45-70 for the real big animals that can bite or stomp you. But if both of these hunters could only use their 30-06, they would not be under gunned for any type of hunting they are likely to do. The customer who shoots the 270 also does one other thing that I agree with; he only shoots one bullet, a 130 grain Nosler Partition. He could shoot 110 grain bullets for

TPWD RAISES FEESby David Kelly

TPWD RAISES FEESby David Kelly

TPWD HAS RAISED HUNTING AND FISHING FEES by about 5% ($2-4) recently. We first broached this subject with you in our Online Polls. Less than 10% of you said that such an increase would affect your hunting and fishing plans in the coming year, with the exact same number of respondents unsure. That meant over 80% of you were fine with the minimal increases needed for TPWD to help cover operating costs. Following are the details:

Hunting licenses will increase from $23 to $25, while the popular Super Combo all-inclusive license increases goes up from $64 to $68. Non-resident hunting licenses will increase by $15 from $300 to $315, one of the items to reflect the full 5% hike.

Fishing packages will also increase by $2. The resident freshwater fishing package increases from $28 to $30 and the saltwater fishing package increases from $33 to $35. The biggest increase in license fees approved by the commission affects lifetime licenses. The resident lifetime fishing and hunting licenses will increase to $1,000 and the lifetime combination license increases to $1,800. "We have not increased the cost of a lifetime license for 12 years," said Gene McCarty, TPWD deputy director of administration. "Frankly, these licenses have been undervalued and could represent significant lost revenue over time if not adjusted."

Boat owners in Texas will also see increases in boat registration and titling fees. Like the lifetime hunting and fishing fees, many of these exceed 5%. Boat registration, which is valid for two years, increase for vessels less than 16 feet in length from $30 to $32 and those in the 16-26 foot range go from $50 to $53. Boats 26-40 feet increase from $70 to $110 and boats greater than 40 feet increase from $90 to $150.

Other miscellaneous increases are primarily in the category of commercial licenses, including commercial shrimp boat captain’s license ($20 increase), resident commercial oyster boat ($21 increase), wholesale fish dealers truck ($28 increase), resident commercial crab fishermen’s license ($30 increase), non-resident commercial oyster boat ($84 increase) and non-resident commercial crab fisherman’s license ($120 increase).

The department received less than 400 comments related to the fee increases during the public comment period, the majority of which came from the TPWD online survey and by email, with only 16 comments resulting from a series of 19 public meetings scheduled around the state. Our own online polling received 21 responses. Overall, comments ran more than 2-to-1 against the increases (contrary to the majority of our membership responding), citing bad economic times as the primary reason.

"Initially we considered a 10-15 percent increase but in this economy we know that is unrealistic and counterproductive," said McCarty. "But, it’s important to mention that this will just keep us even." McCarty noted the fees for none of the special endorsement stamps were increased. The commission approved a new administrative fee of $100 for reinstatement of any recreational or commercial license that has been revoked or suspended. The commission also authorized staff to implement a drawing for a package that includes a lifetime hunting and fishing license and one-year subscription to Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine. Entry fee for the drawing will be $5 and will go on sale August 15 wherever licenses are sold.

We are very pleased to offer JOHN BANOVICH’S “BUFFALO SOLDIERS” S/N GICLÉE CANVAS (24/175) measures 26” x 39” , approximately 37” x 50” framed. Says the artist of his creation, "During the expansion of the American west, one group stands out for their bravery and patriotism - The Buffalo Soldiers of the US army. During the Indian wars, Native Americans used the name to describe the uncompromising spirit and courage of these black warriors. African Americans have fought in all of our military engagements, but their greatest contributions came during the Civil War. Nearly 200,000 Buffalo Soldiers served the Union side. Their sacrifices and bravery were unparalleled. African Buffalos share this vigilant reputation. Their stoic resolve and unwavering constitution mirror these brave and honorable men." A giclée canvas reproduction of a Banovich painting is a fascinating and precise process. Essentially, a digital scan is made of the original painting and entered into a computer. The computer then guides the ink nozzles, which spray microscopic dots of ink so fine that the eye cannot detect them, directly onto the canvas. The ink jets spray more than 4 million ink droplets per second to create thousands of shades of rich color. In the end, an observer sees only a continuous image as vibrant as the original painting. The canvas is then coated to provide UV protection and durability, and signed by John Banovich. Each of these Giclée Canvas reproductions is an investment in aesthetics, giving you the truest performance of the painting possible outside of owning the original. Banovich giclée canvases are printed for a limited number of editions and then never reproduced again. JOHN BANOVICH’S “SABLE AT SUNSET” S/N GICLÉE CANVAS (17/350) measures 11” x 14”, approximately 18” x 21” framed. "The giant sable is the most mythical antelope in Africa,” says Banovich. “They possess a beauty and grace right out of a fairy tale. When I saw this golden light of a sunset dancing across the water I decided to place this large, male sable in the scene. His dark body looked like a piece of black jade slicing through a band of gold, with all reflected in the crystal clear water of Botswana`s Okavango delta." BRIAN JARVI’S FRAMED ARTIST’S PRINT GICLÉE ON CANVAS ENTITLED “MANEATERS OF TSAVO” captures the real stars of 1996’s “The Ghost and the Darkness,” (and you thought that Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer were the headliners). As a professional artist, BRIAN JARVI uses firsthand observation to create very popular, realistic portrayals of wildlife. By combining intricate detail, dramatic lighting, and anatomical accuracy, he has become widely known for his "up close and personal" compositions. Africa and its incredible wildlife has been Jarvi's passion for the past decade. Amidst the lush African scenery and wildlife, Brian creates new masterpieces. "The excitement lies in transferring situations I have witnessed on Safari onto canvas," says Jarvi. "When choosing the themes and subjects of my paintings, I like to draw on personal experience, for example, a bull elephant making a charge or lions attacking a cape buffalo. The tremendous diversity, the sheer numbers, and often-sobering confrontations of the wildlife have spawned more ideas than I can ever hope to put on canvas." This canvas measures 28x42 inches unframed.

BRIAN JARVI’S FRAMED ARTIST’S PRINT GICLÉE ON CANVAS ENTITLED “RAZOR’S EDGE” shows the fine line between becoming dinner and surviving to live another day! Will the zebra escape, or does the pursuing lion still have some chase left in her? Only your imagination holds the answer. This 30” x 60” (unframed) s/n giclée is only one of 100 made available. The 2009 SCIF CONSERVATION ARTIST OF THE YEAR, Brian uses firsthand observations to create very popular, realistic portrayals of wildlife. The second artist to win both the Duck and Pheasant artist contests in his native Minnesota, he is the first to do so in these major print contests in consecutive years. Today, Jarvi continues to go on safari to expand his repertoire of experience and knowledge of the majestic African imagery. Obtained from Jarvi Studios for HGC-SCI First for Hunters by Kirk Waldron, once again negotiating a great price to the benefit our Missions projects!

FREDERICK REMINGTON’S “CHEYENNE” BRONZE, an Indian racing on horseback, was modeled in 1901. Wearing only a loincloth and moccasins, the gaunt, muscular, smooth-skinned rider leans forward, gripping his mustang with his legs and clutching a spear in his left hand and a quirt in his right. His mount is depicted full gallop, or "burning the air," as Remington described it: ears back, tail flowing in the wind, and all four hooves off the ground. The finely chased buffalo skin that serves as a saddle trails off the horse to its right and, with a clump of grass, functions as the sculpture's support. All of the horse's hooves are off the ground in the gallop, and thus The Cheyenne effectively captures the urgent sense of forward motion that Remington intended. In 1900 Remington had switched from the Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company, which used the sand-casting procedure, to the Roman Bronze Works and the lost-wax technique. The lost-wax casting process, new in the United States, allowed the artist more freedom to experiment with the bronze medium and variations are apparent with each example of The Cheyenne. It also allowed for greater detail, for instance in the hairy texture of the horse's hide and the woolly quality of the buffalo skin. Remington oversaw every step of his bronzes' production. The synergistic relationship between Remington and Roman Bronze Works resulted in some of the most outstanding sculptures produced in this country. Altogether about twenty-one casts of The Cheyenne were produced in Remington's lifetime.

LIES, DAMN LIES and STATISTICSEditorial by David Kelly

LIES, DAMN LIES and STATISTICSEditorial by David Kelly

AS THE STORY GOES, a follower once asked Jesus (or it could be Mohammed, Buddha, Ghandi – take your pick) for advice. Seems that over some altercation or disagreement with a neighbor he began spreading vicious rumors about them, all untrue. Upon reflection the disciple regretted what he had done, so sought instruction on repairing the damage. He was instructed to take one of his finest down pillows to the highest point in the city, cut it open, cast the feathers to the wind and then come back for further instructions. A strange method of atonement, he thought, but he completed the task and reported back as instructed. After confirming the task had been completed, his Master said, “Now go and collect all the feathers.”

“Impossible,” the follower exclaimed, “The feathers are scattered all across the city!”

“So also is it impossible to totally repair the damage done to your neighbor’s reputation by your gossip,” was the reply.

Today we are not dealing with just a few feathers. The advent of the Internet makes it possible for scams and lies to be repeated a million fold until fiction is perceived as fact. But I’m not going to talk about Nigerian bank schemes, fad diets, work at home schemes, etc. I’m talking about the ubiquitous chain e-mails that purport untold number of threats to our very way of life with exaggerations, slander, half-truths and downright lies.

Even though this is a pet peeve of mine, I didn’t plan on writing about this until a recent spate of e-mails changed my mind. And since they all dealt with 2nd amendment or security issues, I decided that this discussion had a place in Lions’ Pride. You’ve all heard the expression used in the title of this editorial before, so let’s start with the first category, and then I’ll tell you why I think these sort of arguments undermine our fight for gun rights and hopes for our nation’s hunting legacy.

LIES

This e-mail begins “It has started,” saying that the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009, which amends the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, is President Obama’s first step toward “complete confiscation of guns and disarming of our society.” It’s one of those e-mails that blend fact and fiction so that it takes a little effort to discern what is and isn’t true.

The Act would prohibit a person from possessing a firearm unless issued a firearm license under this provision, or a state system certified by this provision, and so long as such license has not been invalidated or revoked. It prescribes license application, issuance and renewal requirements and prohibits transferring or receiving a qualifying firearm unless the recipient presents a valid firearms license, the license is verified and the dealer records a tracking authorization number. It also prescribes firearms transfer reporting and record keeping requirements and directs the Attorney General to establish and maintain a federal record of sale system, and proscribes safe storage and safety devices to keep firearms out of the hands of children.

That’s the short story. As always, the devil is in the details, and there are a number of items in the bill to take issue with. But the author of this e-mail isn’t satisfied with sticking to the facts, feeling the need to embellish the story to prove his case. For instance, it is totally false that applicants would be required

And since they all dealt with 2nd amendment or security issues, I decided that this discussion had a place in

. You’ve all heard the expression used in the title of this editorial before, so let’s start with the first category, and then I’ll tell you why I think these sort of arguments undermine our fight for gun rights and hopes for our nation’s hunting legacy.

For instance, it is totally false that applicants would be required

to "submit to a physical and mental evaluation at any time of (the government's) choosing" as stated in the e-mail. It merely states that applicants would have to authorize the release of any existing mental health records. And as for inspecting your home to make sure firearms are stored safely away from access by children, the right of inspections with any respect to the bill apply only to "any place in which firearms or firearms products are manufactured, stored, or held, for distribution in commerce," not ordinary households. Nor does this bill originate as part of a new Administration agenda; it has been around since June 2007, introduced after the Illinois representative's son and namesake of the bill was killed in a random Chicago school bus shooting. It's not new nor "under the radar" as claimed, but has been introduced and re-introduced, having never made it out of committee.

Then there is the e-mail that flatly states we won’t be able to buy ammunition after June 30th of this year. As reported on CNN about the time I received that one, there are many states where bills are pending, all from 2007-8, relating to ammunition sales. But contrary to that hyped e-mail, none banning ammunition outright. The organization mentioned, AmmunitionAccountability.org, in that e-mail is a firm supporter of laser encoding of ammunition, presumably to track ammunition used in crimes, and a cursory look at some of the bills linked on their website shows some would ban sales of uncoded ammo by certain dates and possession and use of uncoded ammo at a later date (and not necessarily the dates mentioned). CNN also reported that while this technology does exist, no one has said how much it would cost or whether it could actually be implemented industry wide. I have my doubts, but nevertheless ...

Many of us may view this as a way of making firearm ownership untenable by pricing the ammo out of the market. But it is disingenuous at best to claim "No one can sell ammunition after June 30th" as that e-mail blared. As for that particular e-mail, it is reported to have originated in December of last year (again, not a new Obama initiative). Snopes is currently researching the facts (last updated 1/21/09) and a full report is pending. AmmunitionAccountablity.org shows 30 bills in 18 states listed, and the first one I randomly tried to check out did not even exist according to the State's legislative website!

DAMN LIES

Then there is the e-mail about a bill passed “behind our backs”, H. R. 1388, purporting that “by executive order President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure of $20.3 million in migration assistance to the Palestinian refugees and conflict victims in Gaza,” and noting their “ties to Hamas.” Supposedly this measure entitles “hundreds of thousands of Palestinians with ties to Hamas … 55% of which support suicide bombings,” to live here with free housing and food allowances.

Where to begin? Let’s start by saying H. R. 1388 (The Serve America Act or GIVE) had nothing to do with this. That piece of legislation merely amended the National and Community Service Act of 1990 and the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973, acts originally funding, among other programs, the AmeriCorps and National Senior Service Corps. But hey, why should facts get in the way of a good story, right?

What DID happen is that President Obama, responding to a United Nations appeal to all countries to raise $613 million needed to fund relief efforts after recent Israeli and Palestinian clashes for organizations “distributing emergency food assistance, providing medical assistance and temporary shelter, creating temporary employment and restoring access

Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). It DID NOT and HAD NO PROVISIONS for any migration or resettlement of refugees from the Mid-East, Palestinian Hamas or otherwise.

Oh yeah, and such Presidential Determinations, as they are called, used to authorized this expenditure are hardly an act made in secret or “behind our backs.” President Bush did the exact same thing when he authorized $29.5 million for “humanitarian needs resulting from conflicts in Somalia, Sudan and Chad … and in the West Bank and Gaza” in May of 2007.

STATISTICS

Finally we have the e-mail chronicling the pitfalls of gun control in Australia, now that “it’s been twelve months” and first year statistics “are in.” Never mind that this story relates to measures passed over 10 years ago. It states that Australian gun owners were forced to surrender their firearms and since then homicides, assaults and armed robberies went up by 3.2, 8.6 and 44 per cent respectively. it further states that homicides by firearms in Victoria shot up 300%. Supposedly this came after a 25-year continual decrease in armed robbery by firearms prior to the legislation. And to further inflame the outrage, this e-mail claims that assaults on the elderly increased 25%. “Take note Americans, before it’s too late!” the e-mail ends.

Let’s start there. Call me naïve, but what goes on in other countries notwithstanding, I don’t buy into the “They’re going to take away our guns” argument. There’s a reason we have the 2nd Amendment folks, it’s because no private citizen in any country had a constitutional right to bear arms before that. WE started that. WE gave out citizenry those rights where there were none before, and it’s going to take more than rhetoric to take it away. And as for the registration and licensing being the first step toward confiscation because then the government “then knows where all the guns are,” get real. Do we really think we’d be better off if any Tom, Dick or Harry could walk into any gun shop and walk out with the weapon of their choice without any registration or background check of any kind? But I digress.

The point is that Australian citizens have never had a constitutional right to bear arms. It’s apples and oranges. Before the buy-back plan firearms were restricted to certain groups needing firearms for occupational reasons, members of approved sporting clubs, hunters and collectors. Furthermore, the plan did not take away all guns, primarily semi-automatic and pump action weapons. And even those that can demonstrate a legitimate need for that type of firearm can receive exemptions from the law.

As for the statistics? Remember the title of this editorial. All of the statistics cited deal with raw numbers, that is, the actual number of instances. It’s the rate of occurrences that matter. To say homicides increased 3.2% when the population increased, say 5%, is a decrease in the rate. The fact is most crime category rates declined since the law went into effect. The rest, like the homicide rate, have remained relatively constant (even that dipped slightly just after the plan went into effect). Homicide rates with firearms is now lower than it was before 1997, and in fact, the absolute numbers of firearms homicides in 1998-99 was the lowest of the past ten years. So can statistics lie? You bet they can, and in this case they do so repeatedly.

My point in all of this? First I get to blow off some steam regarding one of my pet peeves. Please check your facts before forwarding that juicy e-mail with snopes.com. By the way, Snopes is a great source for tracking down many stories circulating out there, some true, some downright fiction and many in between. I highly recommend it, not only to get the facts but the fascinating back story on a multitude of subjects. Check it out!

Secondly and most important though is my belief that we must remain vigilant and fight the fight on a factual basis, not by fear mongering. We lose our credibility when our arguments rely on hyperbole, misrepresentations and falsehoods. It seems to me that when debating legislation affecting our nation’s security, hunting and firearms, it should be based on sound arguments regarding feasibility and cost of implementation, reliability of the process, privacy and gun rights, cost to the consumer, states vs. federal jurisdiction issues and last but not least constitutional issues. These are all part of legitimate discourse, not yelling "They're taking away our ammunition!" or "It's the first step toward confiscation." We should never leave ourselves open to accusations of inciting the wayward out there like James Von Brunn, who recently attacked the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D. C., killing a guard. He left a note saying “You wanted my weapons – this is how you’ll get them.”

Of course that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Safe hunting!
