Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.  Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, podcasts, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction. I am at your service.

Congratulations Travis!  Well done!  Travis added " the buck hit hard and gave me a good scrap anyways got to go, good fishing's to yah, cheers".

June 29 Grant Hamer and Mike Holland are photoed with this 33lb Kitimat River Chinook.  Mike and Grant were fishing out of Mike's Clackacraft Driftboat.  Mike is an accomplished Angling Guide with many years of experience.  This was Grant's first Chinook that he has ever landed.  Well done Mike and Congratulations Grant!

June 30 I had the pleasure of fishing with Leroy Mallot and Wayne Askeland from Prince George.  We hooked 3 Chinook and landed one, the last one!  We were using Scotty Orca Rod holders, Ambassadeur 7000i LC (line counter reels), Loomis Hot Shot rods HSR1025, Maxima 25lb Ultra Green and Luhr Jensen Hot Shots and KwikFish.  The "Right Tools for the job".  I love to fish with this equipment and they are an absolute joy for our clients to fish with. Both Leroy and Wayne are mechanics by trade and the concept of the "Right Tools for the Job" applies in their profession as well.  With all due respect to your professions, I would rather be using my tools fishing out of my boat than your tools working on my truck.  The hot colour for the day was "Metallic Pink" Luhr Jensen Hot Shot SE Mag.   Thank You for utilizing our Guiding services.  I love my job and you were both a lot of fun to fish with.

July 2 Mike Herzberg fishing with his long time fishing partner Alvaro hooked 3 Chinook and landed a 20lb. chrome Kitimat River Chinook during a drift in Mike's Clackacraft Driftboat.  Fishing was slow today but Mike and Alvaro still managed to put one into the fish box.  Mike and Alvaro hooked a Chinook on a Yakama Bait Spin n Glo,  a Luhr Jensen Hot Shot and a Luhr Jensen Kwik Fish.  The right tackle in the right hole at the right time!  Well done Mike and Alvaro!

July 2 Marc Girard fishing with his friend Dick Woodcox landed a 20lb Chinook on a Luhr Jensen Kwik Fish.  The highlight of the trip for Dick was to be greeted by the ladies of the Big Spruce.  I don't think Dick has received this much female attention in 30 years.  Congratulations Dick and Marc!   July 3 Kurt Anderson, Chris and his father Greg Laberge hooked 6 Chinook landed one.  They are all fly fishing with 2 hand fly rods!  Greg landed a 30lb Chinook on a fly pattern that Kurt, Greg and Ed evolved.  The group hooked 15 Chinook and landed 5.  All on Fly.  The hooked to landed ratio fishing for Chinook with a Fly is usually not very good.  Please bare in mind that this is a very talented group of Fly Fishers.  They are all very good anglers but nothing compensates for the fact that landing a Big, Bright, Chinook fresh out of the ocean on a fly rod is difficult at the very best.  And at the very worst, the end result after the fights with Chinook on fly, will require therapy.  Good Luck Guys!  Please provide the fish pictures for next week`s report.... Summary:  The Pinks are starting to show up at the Lower Dike (upper, middle and lower Dike) and there have been some Chum caught this week. The Kitimat River will start to fill up with Pinks, Chum and Chinook in the coming weeks.  There might even be the odd Coho caught.  My brother caught a Coho in July 12 years ago and he still brags about it.  It is an exciting time for all anglers to be fishing the Kitimat River.  When you feel the tug, you can never be sure what species it is until you feel the weight or you see the fish. Depending on the type of rod you have when you hook up will usually determine the outcome.  Chinook, Pink and Chum have become very popular especially with Fly anglers.  Anglers be advised that there is non retention of Pink Salmon on the Kitimat River.  Pinks should be released with care to ensure they will survive to be able spawn.  This will help this cycle of Pinks to rebuild.  "The Power of one"  If each one of us carefully releases our catch, as a sport fishing community, we can have a major impact on the fish stocks. TIDAL PORTION:

July 1, Andreas fishing with his father Johann Handl hooked 8 landed 4.  It is always nice to observe father and son sharing the passion of fishing and they caught some very nice Chinook.  Well done Andreas and Congratulations Mr. Handl.  Andreas operates King Fish West Coast Adventures.

July 2 Andreas Handl, his father Johann and Fisheries Biologist, Jason Casselman hooked 8 Chinook and landed 4 fishing the Tidal portion of the Kitimat River.  They were back trolling with a Luhr Jensen Jet Divers and Roe.  It is an art form to back troll with a Jet Divers and Andreas has definitely perfected the technique.  Congratulations to everyone!  Good Job Skipper!  Anyone wishing to fish with Andreas please contact Noel [email protected] DOUGLAS CHANNEL:  The higher than normal south winds continued this week.  One long time Skipper commented "I have never seen south winds for this long of a period". Despite the uncomfortable winds, boaters were still able to venture out and catch Chinook, Coho and Pinks.  Halibut catches are down because some of the better Halibut spots were unable to be fished due to the winds.   Rick the Skipper for the "Anna Christine" reports boating 22 Chinook (the largest 26lbs), 15 Coho and 13 Pinks on the outer waters of the Douglas Channel.  WOW! Congratulations to your group! Well done Skipper!

June 27 Dave Payjack of Sea West Fishing Adventures reports "Pictured here are our clients Tylor and Tyson Hauger, Mat Wirove and Keith Dane. They came up with a great idea of combining their friend's stag and a fishing trip involving 3 boats for two days, what a blast !! These guys boarded the boat rookies and left as excellent fishermen. They landed 2 halibut, 5 cod, 5 chinook, 1 pink salmon and 1 coho along with many more smaller chinook salmon that we released and a half dozen of crab."  Sounds like they had a great time celebrating and catching some fish!  Well done Skipper!  Anyone wishing to book a group fishing trip, please contact Noel [email protected]

July 2 John Ecstein of Blue Heron Charters reports, "Attached is a picture of the one halibut we picked up today with some grey cod. A very nice day on the water for the most part. A little bumpy on the return. A very charming couple".  Congratulations Ken. The weather did not cooperate but you did manage to catch some fish and chips!  Bon Apetite!

July 2 Wes Owen was gracious enough to take my daughter Julie and her friends Devrie Lapointe and Megan Williams crabbing on the Douglas Channel.  They caught 24 Dungeness Crab and Wes commented about how much energy and enthusiasm that these young ladies possessed.  Thank You to Wes from myself and the girls for taking them crabbing. Wes' charter company is Golden Adventures Charters and his comfortable 11 foot beam Bayliner Boat is named Lil Kris.  Contact Noel to book a trip with Wes

July 3 Wes Owen fishing with Georgio and John Dalmonte landed a 20lb and a 14lb Chinook and a Pink in the Kitimat Harbour Fishery.   Congratulations Georgio and John!  Well done Skipper!  The Douglas Channel is very plentiful in Salmon this time of year.  Chinook, Coho, Chum, Pink and Sockeye can be all caught in various areas of the Douglas Channel.  The forecast is for more favorable winds so the Halibut and Bottomfish catch numbers should also improve. When the sun is shining and there are blue skies, calm seas, a cooler full of fish, crab in the pot and a cold beverage in hand....Life is Grand!  If you are sharing the experience with friends, family or good friends.  Well done! We have plenty of open dates for Drfitboat trips, Jet boat trips and Saltwater Charters.  Interested anglers, please contact Noel [email protected] Good Health!  Good Fishing! SincerelyRon Wakita Fishing Report from:  Westcoast Fishing Adventures, Terrace BC Hello Noel, Well it has been an incredible start to the Chinook season with some days guests hooking as many as 20 to 30 Chinook. Instore flyer coming soon... Out of town orders are always welcome. Come in for a coffee anytime. Cheers!Jason Munday Fishing Report from:  Marvin Reid who reports for Meziadin and area, Northern BC Hi Noel, I had the opportunity this past week, to spend some time fishing with two awesome gentlemen from Pennsylvania.  Joe Jordan and Tom Roberts. These fellows were on their way thru to Alaska, and stopped at Meziadin Lake for a couple of nights, and were very interested in experiencing some " Canadian " fishing.  Fortunately we were successful in catching both rainbows and dolly's.  As good as the fishing was, the highlight of the day, was observing an eagle swoop down to take a fish off the surface of the lake, less that 20 feet from the boat.

The fish ladder and fish counting station on the Meziadin River is now manned by fisheries personnel  from the Nisga'a Lisims Government.  They are conducting a mark-recapture study of Nass River Salmon. They are requesting that all tag information be recorded, and the data relayed to Nisga's Fisheries.  They are asking that if you catch a fish and decide to keep it as part of your catch, to please remove the tag and place it in an envelope with the following information. Species, Fisher name, contact number, the date and place of capture and, if possible the sex, and length of the salmon.  Please submit the tag as soon as possible.  There is a drop off box located at the boat launch at Meziadin Lake Provincial Park.  By participating you will be entered into an annual prize draw. I am now the operator of Meziadin Lake Provincial Park, as well as operating the Park which has a Store, and wireless internet to all sites. We also offer Travel Trailer Rentals to persons wishing to enjoy the outdoor experience.

There are not many situations that can quicken an anglers pulse more than being on one of our Northwestern rivers when the salmon are in. The sights of salmon rolling, yells of "Fish On", the expletive deleted of fish lost, and the excitement up and down the river is hard to beat. This weekend the waters of the Nass, Kitimat and Skeena drainage will host some of the biggest Spring/Chinook Salmon in the world and their hopeful anglers. Each angler feeling like they are in the final few of a lottery and their time has come.

The sights and sounds of salmon on the move keeps you enthused long past the usual energy limit. Rests are short, because each minute not casting is a lost opportunity, and the next cast may be your time. And when it comes to the last cast and time to go, I know for me and my buddies, that last cast may be the longest moment in sport. We just don't want to leave.

Page 19: This report is sponsored by the Aspen Inn & Suites ...noelgyger.ca/weekly-fishing-reports/june-27-july-4_2010.d…  · Web viewGood reports from Work Channel, Dundas, Zayas, Squatterrie,

So whether you are pulling plugs, casting spoons, bouncing Spin-N-Glos, bar fishing or swinging a fly, this is your time. Kids are out of school and there are more visitors around but our rivers have lots of room. On some of our more popular rivers crowding can become an issue on the easily accessible holes but if anglers practice the "rotation ethic" everybody can get along.

On one trip with three other fly fishing buddies on a very busy area on the Kitimat, we saw an angler firmly planted right in the middle of our favored run. During the 15 minute walk to the area he had not moved. What to do. Go to another area that likely would also have lots of anglers or convince him to use the "rotation method"?

As it turns out he was a visiting angler from Italy. An accomplished angler, he had fished New Zealand, Argentina and Alaska but no one had explained the "rotation" to him. He readily agreed and we spent the most enjoyable next seven hours fishing that riffle. The five of us swapped fishing tales, helped each other land and release many salmon, took pictures and shared some lunch. It was a great afternoon and the visiting angler said it was the most enjoyable day he had ever had, and thanked us profusely for including him in the group. The thanks was ours for letting us come into a crowded situation. It was the ultimate win-win scenario and a very memorable trip.

The Springs/Chinook are in the Nass system, the Kitimat is absolutely prime right now and the whole Skeena drainage now has salmon in the Copper(Zymoetz), Kispiox, Babine, Bulkley and Morice and all downstream tribs of the Skeena.

Proper tackle is a must. 8 1/2 foot to 12 foot rods rated 25-40 pound with 25-40 pound mono or 50-65 pound braid is necessary. Many anglers are using the new Line Counter Ambassadeur reels and really like them, especially when drifting, pulling plugs or trolling. A large net is recommended. Nothing worse than a monster in too small a net. Single barbless "sticky sharp" hooks are not only recommended but mandatory.

My last salmon trip was a memorable one. We were fly fishing one of our favourite riffles. There were many Springs in the river and the Chums were also showing up. I hooked a very hot fish who screamed out 75 yards of backing like there was no drag. I turned the rod to adjust the drag to a heavier setting but inadvertently pointed the rod at the fish. The rod was ripped from my hand. The panicked dive for the rod missed and I as I stood up dripping wet I thought "What a stupid mistake". There goes a perfectly good Sage rod and reel donated to the river. The group of anglers from Ireland that were below us offered their condolences through heaving shoulders. My buddy said "What are you going to do?” “I have another rod in the truck, I'll go get it".

Returning a half lour later to the river I was about 100 yards from my buddy when one of the downstream Irishmen said 'I've hooked an orange line". It was my backing line. My buddy moved down and here comes the fly rod. The Sage was  miraculously unbroken. As he handed the rod to me he said "I think the fish is still there".

Sure enough that fish was still on a half hour after the initial hookupl. Thirty five minutes later I landed a 35 pound Spring Salmon. Unfortunately that salmon was foul hooked through the dorsal fin, which is why I couldn't control him on the initial hookup. Never have I wanted to take a salmon so bad as that salmon. The half hour walk, the expected non return of a perfectly good Sage rod and Sage reel and that "dummy" feeling wanted me to savour every bite of that fish, but, legally you must release every foul hooked fish. So I released it and thanked that salmon for returning my rod and reel and for the story. One other thing, I will never again doubt the "luck of the Irish".

There is not much that can match the feeling on a salmon river when the run is prime. The feeling of expectation, the screaming of the eagles, the occasional bear, that unexpected seal head popping up in front of you, the wild yells as someone first hooks up.

Wherever you fish this holiday weekend, Enjoy yourself.! Be Safe and may the "Luck of the Irish" be with you.

Prince RupertExcellent fishing now found throughout the Rupert Area. Good reports from Work Channel, Dundas, Zayas, Squatterrie, Stephens, Eddy pass, Humpback Bay and Tsum Tsadai. Some triple digit Halibut and lots of rockfish. Many anglers don't bother with the abundant rockfish as they target the favoured halibut and salmon but they can be a lot of fun with light driftfishing/jigging techniques against the rock walls and kelp beds in the less travelled areas.

BulkleyIf fish are rolling in the Morice, then they have to have gone up the Bulkley! Rumours are going around that fish are now being caught at Idiot Rock and places downstream. Water is looking great but is still high. Use slightly bigger weights, lures, and/or spin n glos to get down on the bottom because of the high water.

MoriceWater is great and fish are seen rolling in some pools.

KispioxFishing is reported as good. Fish are being caught throughout the river. River was looking great although they have gotten a bit of rain in the last 2 days, so it may bump up a bit.

Added Note:
