Second Sunday of Lent - February 21, 2016

From the Desk of Fr. Mark

Hi and I survived my first week of Lent. I actually did more than survive it: I enjoyed it. For me, Lent has different parts that make it meaningful for me. There is the personal side of Lent and the community side of Lent. From a personal view, it is nice to do some work, especially work for the Lord. I grew up with work (and lots of it). From cleaning out hog stables to forking out manure from calf pens, there was always work on the farm. As the youngest boy, my least fa-vorite job was to wash my brothers' cars. I'd much rather spend time in a smelly hog pen than clean a car that I didn't even get to drive. But at the end of the day, there was a sense of accomplishment that I added to the life of the family farm. My favorite kind of work was the kind where our family worked together. Baling was my favorite job in which our family worked together. There was a crew in the field and one at the barn. The trick was to keep both crews working. If everyone did their jobs, by the end of the day, the field was finished and we could stand in a building with a tin-covered roof and hear the raindrops that threatened the harvest. The smell of the rain and victory of a job well done put smiles our faces. The family completed something special. This week in the parish I got to hear many of the ways that children were working on their journey through Lent. With "feeding the hungry" as a background, I heard stories of col-lecting clothes, toys and food for those in need. There seemed to be no lack of ways to reach out to others. I was proud of the family working together. Laborers were sent out to the harvest and the laborers were not few. To hear the enthusiasm of the children was wonderful. On the cross in the vestibule, there is a mercy cross with works of mercy. The whole parish family is invited to cover the cross with mercy. Let's work together as a family to bring God's mercy to the world. This second week of corporal and spiritual works of mercy includes giving drink to the thirsty and counseling the doubt-ful. I can't wait to hear how the parish will be merciful this week. With working as a family as a theme, I'd like to challenge families to work and pray together during this Lenten sea-son. Perhaps families could come to Stations of the Cross or a daily Mass together. Maybe a family could purchase some baby formula to give Heartbeat to give drink to the thirsty. Lent can be enjoyable, even if it requires some work. Let's be laborers for the Lord. Have a great week. Fr. Mark

Year of Mercy Week Two

Give drink to the thirsty and counsel the doubtful. There are many practical ways to live out these works of mercy. For the thirsty, it could be a water night at the dinner table. To refrain from soft drinks and serve water. To think of those who do not have safe water to drink. Say a prayer for them. Take a short shower and conserve water. Be water-conscious, as are many in the world. Buy formula for the food bank or Heart-beat. Find a creative way to give drink to the thirsty. Regarding giving counsel to the doubtful, I love when chil-dren and adults ask me spiritual questions. I love that they want to grow in their faith. If you have a question about your faith, give me a call. Take a catechism to the table and an-swer a question or two per night. Thirst for knowledge.
