My Dear Friends in Christ,
It has come to my attention, from a devout parishioner, that there will be a master tarot reader, medium and Reiki master at a local salon in Flemington. Going to mediums, fortune tellers and playing with Ouija boards are a direct opposition to
our faith and a grave matter for confession. As your pastor, I would be remiss not to warn of the severity of such a
thing. Please pray for the conversion of this medium who is attempting to contact the dead and that the salon would decline to sponsor this event. The Pontifical Committee on Family has warned us that Reiki is not a practice that we should
as Catholics be participating in. As Catholics, we pray for the dead, that they rest in peace, that their time in purgatory is
short. We do not conjure up their spirits.
“The U.S. bishops have published a new evaluation of the Reiki therapy. Calling the Japanese form of alternative medicine comparable to “superstition,” the evaluation describes its practice as being without support in Christian belief, unscientific
and inappropriate for Catholics.” “For Christians the access to divine healing is by prayer to Christ as Lord and Savior,
while the essence of Reiki is not a prayer but a technique that is passed down from the 'Reiki Master' to the pupil, a technique that once mastered will reliably produce the anticipated results.”
Sacred Scripture condemns all sorts of occultism. It violates the First Commandment, “I am the Lord Your God, you shall have not any strange gods before me.” Here are some of the scripture references; Exodus 22:18, Deuteronomy
18:9-12, Galatians 5:19-21, and Revelation 21:8 to mention a few.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church deals with the violation of the first commandment, specifically fortune tellers in
paragraph 2116. It states: “All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading,
interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power
over time, history, and in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect and loving fear that we owe to God alone.”
Let us pray to Almighty God through the intercession of Our Lady, who constantly shows us the way back to her Son, that
we may remain steadfast in our faith, and strong in our witness to Christ our Lord.
Yours in Jesus and Mary,
Fr. Brighenti

First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17
Through Moses, God passed on the command-
ments he wished all people to follow. He tells us
not to worship idols or take the name of the Lord
in vain. All the laws God gave to us, if followed,
would ensure that we could live in peace and
harmony with one another as he had planned.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25
Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ is the power
and the wisdom of God. Although they claimed to
possess wisdom, “God’s folly is wiser than men,
and his weakness is more powerful than men.”
Gospel: John 2:13-25
Jesus went to the temple of Jerusalem to find
merchants there selling sheep and doves. He
knocked over their tables and drove the animals
away. The merchants asked him for a sign that
he was authorized to do this. He told them to
“destroy this temple (referring to his body) and
in three days I will raise it up.” The merchants
misunderstood, and did not believe he could
rebuild in three days what had taken nearly 50
years to build. Still many believed in him, after
seeing the miracles he had performed.

How Can I Make Better Use of My Time this Lenten Season?
Consider visiting a nearby church in the area of your work or come to St. Magdalen’s during the day or after work. Spend a few quiet minutes before the Tabernacle. "The Sacred species reserved in the Tabernacle is to be adored because Christ is substantially present!” Imagine, time alone WITH Jesus!! What better use of anyone’s time, even if only for a short while? “Let us also be generous with our time in going to meet Him in Adoration, and in contemplation that is full of
faith and ready to make reparation for the great crimes of the world. May our Adoration never cease! Such visits
are proof of our gratitude and an expression of our love and a concrete acknowledgement of Our Lord's pres-
ence. Every time we genuflect when we come into the church or walk past the Tabernacle, or spend time before the
Blessed Sacrament, we are making a public profession of Faith. We are saying that we truly believe Jesus Christ
is present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist.”

Liturgy
During Lent of this Holy Year, I intend to send out Missionaries of Mercy. They will be a sign of the Church’s maternal solicitude for the People of God, enabling them to enter the profound richness of this mystery so fundamental to the faith…..They will be, above all, living signs of the Father’s readiness to welcome those in search of his pardon. - Pope Francis (MV 18)

A JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF Healing Hearts
Bereavement Group
Grief is an active, normal process that we must go through to survive our loss. If you are in need of healing after losing a loved one through death and are grieving this loss, you might consider being part of this spiritual based program.
The program consists of 7 weekly sessions offering information about the grief process, and gives an opportunity for people to share their thoughts and feelings in an environment of
confidentiality, understanding and empathy. The support group is open to all people who are grieving the death of a loved one.
The sessions will start Sunday March 18th. and continue through May 6th. Each session is held from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in the
Spiritual Formation Center Conference Room.
To register or for more information please

Scripture tells us that St. Joseph was a "just man" and that God gave him the most
daunting task ever asked of a man–to be the husband of the woman who would give birth to the Messiah and the father and protector
of this Holy Family. He would be the man closest to Christ. In this, the first feature film
ever on the story of St. Joseph, witness powerful scenes in the life of the young Christ
and the Holy Family that are authentic and inspiring.
