Dear Friends, Today is the First Sunday of Advent. What is Advent? Advent is a time of preparation – not only is it a time of preparation for celebrating the birth of Christ, but it is also a time of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. Although the Priest wears purple vestments, Advent is not a time of penance, but a time of preparation. Properly speaking, Advent is a season that brings to mind the Two Comings of Christ. At the beginning of Mass on the Sundays of Advent we will light a candle on our Advent Wreath as we progress towards Christmas. On the Sundays of Advent we will sing “O Emmanuel” songs. Each Sunday we will sing “O Emmanuel” for the opening hymn, the “Advent Litany” for the Offertory hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” for one of the Communion hymns, and we will have a quiet time of reflection after Communion with no hymn. Because John the Baptist is mentioned in the Gospel on the Second and Third Sunday of Advent, we will play on a CD, the song “A Voice in the Wilderness”. During Advent we will celebrate an extra evening weekday Mass on Wednesday at Sunnybank at 6.00pm. This might be a suitable time for people returning from work to be able to celebrate Mass during the week. At the Sunday night Mass at Sunnybank, we will be blessing 33 of our youth who are attending the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Adelaide next weekend. Steven Bird, John Thomas (APRE at Thomas More College), and Fr Dom will also be attending the Festival in Adelaide. Keep these youth in your prayers. During Lent next year we will be holding another pilgrimage between the Parishes of our Deanery on the Thursday nights of Lent. Our pilgrimage will be called Faith 16. We held a similar pilgrimage in the Parishes of our Deanery last year which was very successful with 200 to 300 people attending each Thursday night of Lent. Pope Francis will begin The Year of Mercy on 8th December, so our pilgrimage themes will centre on God's mercy. More details soon. We look forward to celebrating the Christmas break up of our Friendship Group of our Parishes this Wednesday. The Friendship Group has had another very successful year and a fitting way to celebrate is to gather next Wednesday. More details on page 3 of this newsletter. The Fundraising Campaign for the Extension and Refurbishment of Our Lady of Lourdes Church is going very well. We have received promises to provide finance for all the altar furnishings, we have sold several new pews and refurbished pews and we have received finance for 64 cubic metres of the refurbished Church. The total received is now at $39,900. Thank you. SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY POPE FRANCIS ON CHANGE & FINAL MEETING 2015

Pope Francis has outlined a comprehensive vision for the future of the Catholic church, forcefully telling a national conference of the Italian church that our times require a deeply merciful Catholicism that is unafraid of change. Francis said Catholics must realize: "We are not living an era of change but a change of era."

“With the problems of the church it is not useful to search for solutions in conservatism or fundamentalism, in the restoration of obsolete conduct and forms that no longer have the capacity of being significant culturally," the Pope said. "Christian doctrine is not a closed system incapable of generating questions, doubts, interrogatives -- but is alive, knows being unsettled, enlivened. It has a face that is not rigid, it has a body that moves and grows, it has a soft flesh: it is called Jesus Christ."

The final meeting for the year will be held in Paloma on Thursday 3rd December commencing at 7.00pm. All are invited to attend the meeting which will celebrate the activities of this year and discuss planning for 2016.

FAITH 16

Pope Francis (2015) in announcing the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, reminded us that we need to “contemplate the mystery of mercy” as mercy is a source of peace, joy and serenity that our salvation relies on and is revealed in the Most Holy Trinity. Pope Francis continues telling us that mercy is God’s ultimate and supreme act in which God comes to meet us, it is the fundamental law that dwells in each heart and it connects God and man as hearts are opened by the hope of everlasting love despite our sinfulness.

Pope Francis calls us to recognise and live the season of Lent in this Jubilee year with greater intensity and to treat the season as a time to celebrate and experience God’s mercy. The Brisbane South Deanery, in listening to this call, will pilgrimage to Parishes in the Deanery every Thursday evening during the season of Lent 2016.
