  • Collectively led by drummer and vocalist Guillermo E Brown, bassist Keith Witty and saxophonist Christophe Panzani, THIEFS is a grammatically incoherent jazz bastardization. Fully acoustic to fully electronic, THIEFS weaves elements of modern composition and improvisation into a boundary-less foundation of beats. Between them, Brown, Witty and Panzani have supported artists as varied as Amel Larrieux, Anthony Braxton, Carla Bley, David S. Ware, EL-P, Hocus Pocus, Jamie Lidell, Saul Williams, Somi and VIjay Iyer. As THIEFS, their experiences and influences make a hot mess in the melting pan. THIEFS has recently been named an FAJE (French American Jazz Exchange) grantee for 2012-2013, a joint program of FACE (French American Cultural Exchange) and Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, with generous funding from The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Socit des Auteurs et Compositeurs de Musique (SACEM), Florence Gould Foundation, and InstitutFranais.

He has performed on all of Spyro Gyras albums to date and has written or co-written over fifty Spyro Gyra compositions since Catching the Sun. He released his first solo record, Extremities, in 1990 and has plans to continue his solo career along with his Spyro Gyra commitments. His dream is to someday be able to balance his solo career with guest appearances on albums of other artists as well as Spyro Gyra and find the time to score a movie or two. This CD has the same effect only on an interplanetary scope. Each song sends the listener to another celestial body of musical mastery from instrumental jazz to vocal funk. Enjoy the trip!

  • We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

    A LOOK ATchicagoland jazz festivals

The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

The Chicago Jazz Festival highlights a genre that is such a part of Chicagos musical heritage and its a great Labor Day Weekend tradition, said Michelle T. Boone, Commissioner of DCASE. But over time, traditions can use a jolt of new and fresh ideas. Millennium Park and the Pritzker Pavilions state-of-the-art sound system provide an idyllic setting to enjoy this festival and experience the intricacies of jazz music.

The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area with his parents in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Andersons band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. The worldwide demand for his talents regularly takes Drake away from home. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival 34 years after he first played this event encompasses the festivals entire history.

The stage that promotes the future of the genre by highlighting local high school and college jazz bands and ensembles, The Chicago Community Trust Young Jazz Lions Stage, will find its new home on the Harris Theater Rooftop on Saturday and Sunday.

Millennium Park and the Jay Pritzker Pavilion will also play host to the first night of the 30th Annual Chicago Blues Festival, Thursday, June 6, before the milestone event moves to Grant Park for three full days of music on five stages, June 7-9.

For continuing updates on the 35th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, visit www.chicagojazzfestival.us, and become a fan on the Chicago Jazz Festival Facebook page and follow on twitter @ChicagoDCASE.

    www.donnymccaslin.com

Acclaimed saxophonist Donny McCaslin takes a bold leap forward with his tenth album as a leader, Casting

for Gravity. McCaslins gargantuan tenor sound finds an ideal setting to rampage through in the ferocious

grooves and electronic textures of keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Tim Lefebvre, and drummer Mark

Guiliana. Couching his trademark gift for brawny melodies in lurching dub rhythms, swirling electronica

inspired atmospheres, and arena-rock power, McCaslin has crafted a game-changer of an album, fusing a

wealth of forward-looking influences into one wholly new modern jazz sound.

Casting for Gravity follows on the heels of 2011s highly acclaimed Perpetual Motion, which found McCaslin

experimenting for the first time with merging his hard-charging acoustic sound with more funk-inflected

electrified elements. But where that album was a blistering electro-acoustic hybrid, Casting for Gravity soars

past fusion into alchemy, forging a visionary voice from eclectic influences.

I wanted to make a bigger record with more sonic layers, McCaslin explains. I wanted to go a lot deeper

into the electronic realm and push myself harder. McCaslins initial forays into plugged-in territory were a

reflection of his upbringing in Santa Cruz, California, where he was weaned on the deep, deep grooves of

Tower of Power and Headhunters bassist Paul Jackson. Those influences remain in the percolating rhythms

of Bend or the enormous musculature of Stadium Jazz, inevitable how deeply ingrained they are into

    McCaslins approach.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

  • getting to know

I was born in Martinique, grew up in Paris, where I studied piano. I come from a rather artistic family, with a mother who was a painter, a father a writer, an uncle- a musician at the Paris Conservatory. My musical influences ranged from classical European music, to jazz (which was rather well respected when I was a child in France), to African, Brazilian and what would now be called world music. In my early twenties, I came to New York and started playing the blues, first on guitar, then on electric bass. I traveled much through Europe and Africa and moved to Chicago in the early 80s as I wanted to play Jazz and upright bass. I ended up going to school in Chicago and obtained a Bachelors and 2 Masters degrees which has now allowed me also to raise my daughter born in Chicago. Unfortunately, I have no connections within the French Jazz scene. I spend my time (too much of it!) teaching music for Chicago Public Schools and playing gigs around Chicago and the midwest.

Biggest Obstacles you have faced in your musical career? Why should this questionnaire starts with obstacles? I could think of many but none are more real than those I have created for myself. Being Female? Being an immigrant? Being whatever that is not fitting the mold of the cliques? Clubs are closing? Times are changing? I am resolved to think in terms of solutions, not obstacles. The road is littered with many seen and unseen obstacles. So I will keep playing, singing, studying, learning to the best of my ability.

Greatest Achievements in Music to this point?I have been blessed to play with great musicians, but I am not sure I count those episodes as greatest achievements. I am not a known musician in Chicago, or anywhere else for this matter. The limelight of the Jazz or Blues Fest might have shown on me, I have traveled to Africa but I measure success to where I am now?. I am blessed to be able to live and play. Wherever I play/sing, if someone shed a tear or smile, I have touched a soul. That is grass root success!

Who has inspired you over the years to continue with your musical career? Some musicians have been extremely instrumental (no pun intended) in giving advice both musically and spiritually: Ted Dunbar in NYC and Von Freeman in Chicago. Not forgetting all the musicians that encouraged me and gave me the opportunity to play with them and offered their insight into the music called Jazz.

Favorite CD you are listening to right now? I have listened to countless albums and CDs. Bassists, horn players, pianist, African rhythms...I now prefer to listen to the radio (HPK and DCB) as I like to hear new music that I may not know. The internet has also brought me new music.

What are your future musical goals? Putting out a second CD of original compositions that have been laying on my piano for the past umpteen years as I am finishing putting the first one together which a compilation of older recording + 2 original compositions.

favorite cuisine to cook at home?Anything that grows and is fresh. Usually no meat. I have a wide palette of likes, having been born outside of the US. I like spicy food. I need something green and fruit.

Beverage of choice? Usually a glass of wine, red or white depending of the situation. A martini when I need it, which is seldom.

Last book youve read?Walter Mosley: The Tempest Tales. Also by the same author Twelve Steps Towards Political Revelation. Deep insight into the land I have chosen to live in!

Last concert you have attended?Cedar Walton at the Jazz Showcase with great bassist Dave Williams (I think that is his name).

Favorite TV Show?Pretty much none! I find most programs rather insipid. I would rather read a book. I might watch Channel 11 Nova and Nature if and when time permits.

Favorite place in Chicago to hang out?I would love to find a place to hang out that would be free of neighborhood constraints. Always miss New York. Parking and cover charges do not facilitate the hanging out process. Furthermore, when I am playing, which is usually in a club/bar/restaurant, I see people hanging out drinking. I dont drink much. I dont have much time to do so and hanging out by myself does not attract me, unless there is good music.

Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jims interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daleys radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

    Hw C M FLINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

NEW RELEASE OUT NOW Robin Watsons Fine and Mellow: A Tribute to Billie HolidayRobin Watsons new CD release Fine and Mellow is a personal tribute to Lady Day Billie Holiday. Ms. Watson, an accomplished singer of the Jazz, Blues, Pop and Soul genre in her own right, highlights the nuance of Holidays unique vocal style while incorporating her own energy and range that has kept her in demand locally as well as past tours outside of the USA. Her rendition of Billies classic Youve Changed, the prophetic tune God Bless the Child, to the bluesy swing of the title tune, Fine and Mellow, not only show Ms. Watsons range of emotion and depth as a singer, but she understands the history behind the lyrics. It is a perfect balance of honoring one of the pioneers of women jazz singers with a fresh look. Pianist David Turner, bassist Rolfe Hokanson and drummer, Harold Morrison, set the groove just right. Without any studio antics, as a team this combo make the listener feel like they are in the very same room setting down a mellow tone.

The CD is currently available for sale via my website www.jazzladyrobin.com.

February 18, it will be available on cdbaby and I-tunes.
