This year the theme is A.NEW and the
Festival will last for 6 days. This
is a new formula for Lodz Design
Festival. By exhibitions, lectures,
discussion panels and workshops we
will be wondering about modern
design, design from scratch, a new
design. Feel invited already!
The exhibition focuses on the
potential role of design and
designers, working with enterprises
and public institutions to transform
the experience of ageing. Against
the backdrop of radical demographic
change, a context in which growing
numbers of older people in society
will depend on and desire
innovations in design, the
exhibition brings together a range
of new approaches to the issues that
face them. We are living longer due
to significant advances in life
science, medical care, diet and
education.

The New Old will experience ageing unlike
any of their predecessors. Nevertheless the
familiar challenges of ageing – the need to
keep people fit, active and living
independently in their own homes, rather
than in institutional care – do not go
away. But there is a vastly increased
potential to address them for the New Old
at every level, from architecture to
technology, from digital applications to
redesigning domestic appliances. This is
the aspect that the exhibition addresses in
a timely and relevant way. It sets out the
changing demographic picture in which
design sits, and showcases specially
commissioned prototype projects by leading
designers related to such areas as living,
health, communication and mobility.

Urban Daydreaming is a wide-ranging
study of possible development solutions
for cities, a repertoire of new forms
imaginable in very different urban
situations. Much like a large, open
sketchbook, the solutions are presented
as a meander through models and films.
The immersive staging of this exhibition
aims to transport the visitor into
different scenarios; each model is like
a separate act of an urban play. A
significant number of ideas were
produced over the course of a year. From
this intense research, fourteen
proposals were selected and turned into
detailed study models.

These spontaneously developed
projects highlight the need to bring
natural forms back into the city:
plants, animals, water and fire. The
concept behind the majority of these
ideas is rooted in the way nature
interacts with the city. The
scenarios take into consideration
urban functions and suggest a new
direction in the relationship between
buildings, the quality of a pavement,
the positioning of a fountain, the
planting of a jungle: all these human
considerations that would make the
city a place of enchantment. Rêveries

The make me! competition is a key
event of Lodz Design Festival; it is
now one of the major international
competitions for young generation of
designers. The competition gathers
young designers from all over the
world. In 2016, we had submissions
from Spain, Netherlands, Colombia,
Ukraine, China, USA, South Korea,
Mexico, Denmark, Italy, Hungary,
United Kingdom, Austria, Norway,
Romania, Germany, Ireland, France,
Greece, Moldavia, Sweden, Slovakia,
Russia and Czechia. Among 218
submissions, the jury selected 24
projects.

must have is a contest in which we single out the best implementations by Polish
designers and manufacturers to reflect the most important trends in local design.
It is a free quality mark to be used in Poland and abroad. It was created to
spread the word about good Polish design and thus promote native businesses and
designers. This year we have awarded 75 products! Many of them will be presented
during the festival.

The special guest of Festival will be
Jenny B. Osuldsen from Snøhetta
studio, very well known all over the
world. The studio works around
architecture, landscape architecture,
interior design, as well as design
itself, hiring 180 employees from 30
different countries. In 1989, the
studio received the very first project
– to design the Library of Alexandria
in Egypt. This projects is one of the
best examples of modern architecture,
as well as a model approach of
Snøhetta’s architects.
.
The vast relationships between different disciplines are driving force of every
project of the studio. Landscape and architecture are working together without
any division, from the very first stage. Every project is created with thinking
about a dialogue with nature, landscapes, ecology and simplicity.

10 years later, the studio designed the National Opera in Oslo. In 2009, this
project was awarded with the prestigious award – the Mies van der Rohe. In 2004,
Snøhetta started designing and creating the World Trade Center Memorial
building, the cultural center. Every year studio is getting bigger, better known
and their projects taking people’s breath away.

Educreation. Children meet design is a
place for educational play for the
youngest visitors of Lodz Design
Festival. We organize interactive
workshops, educational walks around
exhibitions for children, as well as
exhibition dedicated to them. During
this edition of Educreation we would
like to encourage kids to experiment
with physics, chemistry and science,
as well as show them the world of
technology, 3D printing, creating
robots, and programming. We don’t
forget about the world around us,
that’s why we will educate the
youngest with basics.
Academy of Creative Development Inspiro will conduct three workshops:
„Experiments with volcanoes”, „Experiments with weather” and „Cosmic expedition”.
Every child will build its own volcano, learn more about the space and how
exactly weather works. Momakin group along with children will make a short stop-
motion animation from various, even the craziest ideas. We have also invited to
cooperate with us: LOFI Robot, for.rest, Roślinne porady, Mikstura,
Stowarzyszenie „Z Siedzibą w Warszawie”, Hulaj Dusza, Robokonstruktor. We’re sure

Along with Dawid Ryski, one of the best
Polish illustrators, we have created an
interactive mask calendar, which will tell
children a little bit more about the nature
around them. We invite every child, as well
as grown-ups, to this all year long
adventure. Dawid took care of beautiful
illustrations. LDF team wish everyone a
great year 2018, full of fascinating
meetings with animals!
Do you know how a bird’s nest is made? How many dots
does a grown ladybug have, and what do they eat for
dinner? How much food per day should a bird eat? Ewa
Solarz, a curator of this exhibition, Ewa Bochen and
Maciej Jelski from Kosmos Project, who took care of
scenography and Małgorzata Gurowska, a graphic
designer, invite you to visit the forest.
The Mobile Institute of Culture is a black, multifunctional container that traverses Europe
in order to present, as well as search, culture and creativity. This year, the exhibition
"Polish Design Island 2017" will be presented in the container. 27 designers, cooperation of
9 regions of Poland, 4 European cities, 6 thousand miles and 7 weeks of exposure is PDI's
edition of this year. Nearly 30 objects represent the idea of sustainable development,
showing different methods for designing forms, functions or meanings while minimizing the
so-called eco footprint.
This is an exclusive and unique album, created by the SLOW Foundation. Based on the album, an
exhibition has been created, so far shown in Budapest and Vienna. During Lodz Design Festival
this exhibition will be presented for the first time in Poland. It consists of 39 works of
the best, contemporary Polish illustrators. There has been no similar position for decades,
and the SLOW Foundation decided that it was time to change it.

This is a collection of interesting and beautiful objects, but with functions which are very
difficult to guess. For what exactly do they exist? What was the purpose to make them?
Mystery Things Museum is a project created by the local community. An exhibition of various
objects travels in different places, expanding their collection with new products, brought
by inhabitants of the city. Anyone can add any object. There are only three requirements: it
must be mysterious and small.
Rita Koralevics is a designer from Budapest, who founded her own brand called Paper Up! in
2013. Using paper pulp and mixing it with cement, she creates lamps, boxes, vases and bowls.
Rita will present her products to the festival's guests thanks to the cooperation between
Lodz Design Festival and the MADEINHUNGARY + MEED festival. Her products were exhibited on
the "Design without borders" exhibition in Budapest. Now, she will visit Poland.

The exhibit of Industrial Design studio at Faculty of Multimedia
Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín called "Cucej" is
focused on the typically Czech phenomenon spa cup and the spa
surroundings in general. The whole installation is designed to
evoke the peaceful atmosphere of the spa and unique charm combined
with magnificent nature and its gifts. The health and purity of
spa are enhanced by chosen organic morphology of the exposition
and used natural materials, such as sand, water, and moss, which
the exhibited porcelain spa cups entirely naturally sounds with.

Decorating ceramics in the ceramics factory in Boleslawiec has been continued for two
centuries and consists of applying each product with their characteristic stamping
technique. Employees superimpose the patterns, moving the toque mechanically at a specific
angle. All movements and sponge traces are counted, they have to stick to a pattern, they
are an individual gesture, together to create the rhythm of a busy factory. This work could
be done by machines, but then the products would lose their characteristic "hand made"
mark, valued by all recipients of this pottery.
The Human Trace tableware set was produced in a factory production line by workers wearing
gloves with their fingertips dipped in cobalt salts. The traces of their touch remain almost
invisible until firing, when the appear on the porcelain body, as cobalt turns dark blue. In
this way the porcelain tableware keeps the touch of workers’ hand, revealing the role of the
„human factor” in industrial manufacturing. The set has been manufactured as a part of the
project „People from the porcelain factory”, realised in one of the oldest ceramics factory
in Poland in Ćmielów. Authors of this project are Arkadiusz Szwed and Ewa Klekot.

Livstycket is a center of design and contemporary knowledge in Tensta in Stockholm. This
place is giving a chance to learn Swedish language and culture to women who emigrated to
Sweden. The center is also helping them with increasing their self-esteem by using functional
pedagogy and theoretical education, along with sewing, embroidery and printing. Livstycket
creates patterns on textiles, which are then are used to make various products. Those
products will be presented on the exhibition during the festival thanks to cooperation with
the Embassy of Sweden.

Everyone is unique. Some activities are easy, some difficult. Sometimes, what comes easy,
isn’t a norm. We call that a talent. Sometimes, what’s difficult, is beyond a norm. This
can be called ‚disability’. This exhibition presents various solutions for people with
disabilities; products which are helping with taking care of those people, as well as
products designed to respond to their specific needs. This exhibition is organized by The
Swedish Institute. Its curator is Margarita Bergeldt Matiz.

This exhibition can be sum up by only one word – dignity. To live dignity, regardless of any
disabilities, it is the right of every human, according to the UN convention of rights of
persons with disabilities. The fight for equality is not yet won. There’s a long way ahead.
But giving a chance to be noticed and heard to those who have different disabilities, is a
step forward.
