Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! Our Bishop, clergy, religious and faithful welcome you to St. Stephen Cathedral. We are delighted that you have joined us for our Divine Liturgy. Our Church follows the teachings of Jesus Christ as found in the Gospel and passed on to us through the teach-ings of the Apostles and Holy Tradition.

ONLINE CLASSES FROM METROPOLITAN CANTOR INSTITUTEThe following courses will be offered from April to June: 

Introduction to the Divine Liturgy – April 24 to June 16, 2017An 8-week introduction to the singing of the Divine Liturgy. Each student will demonstrate knowledge of ONE melody for each major hymn. Students will record their singing for review and feedback. This course assumes  the knowledge and skills taught in Introduction to Liturgy and Introduction to Church Singing. Tuition: $75. 

Reading in Church – April 24 to May 19A 4-week course covering the role of the reader, the melody used for the epistle and Old Testa-ment readings, and how to prepare to read in church. Students will record their singing for review and feedback. This course assumes the knowledge and skills taught in Introduction to Liturgy and Introduction to Church Singing, but this material can learned before the reader's course if the student is motivated.  Tuition: $30. 

Introduction to the Typikon – May 22 to June 16

A 4-week course that teaches cantors the skills necessary to determine the changeable hymns to be sung at the Divine Liturgy throughout the year. (No singing component.) Tuition: $30. Please pass the word on to anyone in you parish who might be interested.  A registration form can be found at

We have also added quite a bit of new material to the MCI website on singing, music theory, and chant leadership. SUMMER SCHOOL FOR CANTORS This year, the Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh is inaugurating a regular summer church music program for cantors, choir directors, and section leaders. For 2017, the program will consist of a three-day master class and workshop to be held on July 12-14 at Ss. Cyril and Metho-dius Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA.  For more information, see

CURRENT BISHOP’S APPEAL RECORDParish Goal: $29,700.00 Amount Pledged: $16,518.00 (46 of 108 households pledged)Pledge Payments Received: $14,953.00 Pledge Amount Needed to Reach Goal: $13,182.00*Please note that instead of requesting $200.00 per family, the Eparchy is kindly asking for a pledge of $275.00 per family to allow the Eparchy to continue funding programs within our Eparchy. It has been 20 years that we have asked for $200.00 and it’s now time to upgrade that to meet the ris-ing cost of programs from 20 years ago.

MOTHER’S DAY TEA sponsored by GCU Lodge 999 will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM in the Parish Hall. Donation is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children under age 11. The event will benefit the Lodge 999 Scholarship Fund. Women and men are invited and a light luncheon will be served. For more information contact Joanie Mahar at 602-920-0607.

EASTERN CATHOLIC BIBLE CONFERENCE will be held at our Parish Hall onFriday, May 19 from 6:30 - 9:00 PM and Saturday, May 20 from 10 AM - 3:45 PM.The topic will be “The Book of the Beginnings – Genesis in the Easter Christian Traditions.”Information and registration forms are at the entrance of the church

2017 MYRRH BEARERS RETREAT for women and girls will take place at the Franciscan Re-newal Center in Scottsdale from Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25. Brochures and retreat regis-tration forms will be coming soon. For more information please see Sr. Jean Marie. Brochures are in the entrance to the church.

ALIVE IN CHRIST 2017 This year’s Alive in Christ will be held at Prescott Pine Christian Camp in Prescott, Arizona beginning Thursday, July 6 at 2:30 PM and concluding on Sunday, July 9 at 1:00 PM. The theme of the this year’s spiritual retreat camp is “Theosis Through Liturgy: The Work of the People and Their God.” All applicable forms and payments are due by May 12. Checks are to be made payable to “Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix.” If you are interested, please pick up one of the yellow forms at the entrance table in church

Preparations are well under way for the 50th Jubilee Celebration. A special event will be held each month beginning June, 2017 and concluding June, 2018. The first event as preparatory for the celebration of our 50th Jubilee of St. Stephen Cathedral is planned for JUNE 22, 2017. All parish-ioners and friends of St. Stephen’s are invited to a Moleben honoring St. Stephen with Dinner fol-lowing. The clergy from our Eparchy will be present for this event. Please RSVP by June 1st using the invitations on the Welcome Table.

LENTEN FISH FRIES A SUCCESSAnd that wouldn’t have happened without the hard working, dedicated volunteers, aka YOU. The Lenten fish fries attendance had increased every week. The last 2 weeks each had just over 200 dinners served. The baked goods sales also increased. We had great products, good prices, adver-tisement, hard work, faith and You.
