For over a century, Thompson Health has been dedicated to keeping our community

healthy. Each day, we strive to uphold Mary Clark Thompson’s legacy of caring by

delivering the highest quality, most compassionate health care.

Like other not-for-profit health systems in the state, we continue to depend

upon charitable contributions to grow and thrive – and are grateful to the individuals,

groups and corporate partners recognized on the pages of this report for their

support. These are just a few of the many kind friends who have helped Thompson

provide exemplary health care by donating to our capital campaign, annual fund or

one of our vital programs.

Building a Healthy Future

To continue our long tradition of providing superior health care, Thompson must constantly grow and improve.

Early in 2010, we launched our Building a Healthy Future Capital Campaign.

After receiving a generous lead gift from the Sands Family and Constellation

Brands, we were on our way to achieving an ambitious goal of $14 million to help

fund PROJECT EXCEL, Thompson’s 103,000-square-foot expansion and renovation

initiative. We are extremely grateful to our Capital Campaign Committee members

who helped provide guidance and build momentum for our Capital Campaign.

These enthusiastic individuals worked tirelessly to plan campaign-related activities,

raise philanthropy to a higher level and assist us in spreading the word about how

our capital improvements will enhance the patient experience, increase our quality

of service and improve overall patient satisfaction at Thompson Health. As 2010

came to a close, more than $13.8 of our $14 million goal was raised. Once again,

thank you to our hardworking Capital Campaign Committee members. Together,

we are “building a healthy future” for the families of our community.

At Thompson Health, we are truly fortunate to have the unwavering support of so many wonderful families in our community. Through several generations,

these dedicated friends have graciously opened their hearts and homes to

Thompson, giving countless dollars and hours of their time to ensure we can

continue to meet our community’s health care needs. While many families chose

to support a specific campaign, others gave a gift to commemorate a loved one,

coordinated a fundraising event or volunteered simply to brighten a patient’s

Since 1905, the Thompson Guild, a not-for-profit fundraising organization, has served Thompson Health and our

surrounding communities. Established by the F.F. Thompson Hospital Board of

Directors, the Guild’s goal is to raise funds to purchase needed medical equipment

and furnishings for the Thompson Health System. Today, the Guild has more

than 200 members and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. All of us at

Thompson Health are privileged to have the support of the Guild – and express

our sincere thanks and appreciation for its continued generosity.

Numerous gifts made possible by the

Thompson Guild in 2010 included:

• A 15-passenger, handicapped accessible,

air conditioned bus, which cost more than

$55,000, for M.M. Ewing Continuing Care

Center residents and Brighter Day participants

• A $4,500 automatic door for easier access

to M.M Ewing Continuing Care Center’s

Rosewood section

• A $9,000 contribution towards the

Debra R. Hawks Memorial Garden

• Proceeds of more than $11,000 from the

Guild’s Basket Raffle, which funded eight

Logitech® Pro 9000 Web Cameras to

connect Thompson off-sites with the main

campus, an LCD-LED HD TV for use during

educational activities, plus numerous

From silent auctions to a summer soiree, to raffles, races, golf and garage sales, there certainly

was a broad spectrum of out-of-the-box and over-the-top fundraising initiatives

during 2010. All of us at Thompson Health extend our appreciation to each

and every member of our community, as well as to local clubs, organizations

and corporate supporters. You are all our valued partners in health – and the

reason Thompson is able to grow, thrive and serve our community well.

Creative Community Support

In April 2010, Ravenwood Golf Club donated the use

of their facility for our 14th Annual Better Life 5K.

Their generous contribution provided a unique, scenic,

safe and challenging course on the golf club’s paved

cart paths. After the race, all participants, volunteers

and spectators were welcomed to Ravenwood’s banquet

facility for an awards ceremony and refreshments.

In partnership with The Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing

Arts Center (CMAC) and the Canandaigua Family YMCA, Thompson Health

distributed more than 70 flu shots at a free flu clinic in November. This clinic

for the uninsured and underinsured was made possible through monetary “tips”

collected during the summer by CMAC Ambassadors at the Robert Mondavi

wine tent. The Ambassadors, volunteers from Constellation Brands, Inc.

who staffed the tent during each of the 23 events at CMAC, collected nearly

$2,000. CMAC matched the amount for a total donation of $4,000 to fund the

free flu vaccinations and other efforts promoting health and wellness in the

Canandaigua community.

To keep pace with the ever-changing healthcare needs of our community, Thompson Health must continue to

invest in our Associates and state-of-the-art technologies. Whether it’s providing

career advancement opportunities, staying equipped with the latest machines

to detect breast cancer early or being able to access veins easily in the tiniest of

patients, donations to F.F. Thompson Hospital help us remain on the leading edge

of technology and provide the highest quality health care.

During 2010, Thompson Health received a $50,000

grant from KeyBank to provide skill training in

phlebotomy and electrocardiogram testing (EKG) over

a three-year period to all current acute care nurse

aides at F.F. Thompson Hospital.

A generous gift of nearly $17,500 from

the Thompson Guild enabled us to purchase

a VeinViewer® Vision Imaging System

for our Birthing Center. This cutting-edge

machine uses near-infrared light and

patented technologies that allow clinicians

to view babies’ veins before inserting

a needle for blood draws or IVs. This

increases comfort and efficiency, as

well as reduces stress and the number

of painful needle sticks in babies.

Full field digital mammography equipment enables Thompson to offer patients in our

area the benefits of ultra-safe, ultra-fast imaging with outstanding clarity and accuracy.

Unlike traditional film mammography, digital images are viewed on high-resolution monitors.

Our radiologists can also adjust the brightness and zoom for a closer look at any suspicious

breast abnormalities. Our heartfelt gratitude to Mark and Karen Blazey for helping to make

the purchase of our digital mammography equipment possible.

Everyone who knew Carl Gehrig remembers him as hardworking and a master at fixing things. As a lifelong resident of

Canandaigua, he owned and operated Carl’s Collision, a popular

body shop on Green Street, for several decades.

Carl, who was a U.S. Air Force Korean War veteran, never

married and had few living relatives. But his mother Leora was

perhaps the most important person in his life. As the one-time

owner of the Georgian Motel in Canandaigua, she assisted Carl

with the accounting side of his business.

After Leora’s death at the age of 95 in 1999, Carl set up

a testamentary charitable remainder trust, naming the

F.F. Thompson Foundation as the beneficiary after his own

and his brother’s passing. He made this extraordinary gift in

appreciation for the care his beloved mother received while

a patient at F.F. Thompson Hospital.

When Carl passed away in December 2003, a portion of

his estate was left to the Thompson Foundation and the

Sands Cancer Center. The remaining testamentary gift was

received in 2010 upon the death of his brother.

All of us at Thompson Health are grateful for Carl’s

generosity and foresight. Although he did not seek lifetime

recognition for his gift, we are confident Carl would be

very pleased to know that his philanthropy will help build a

healthy future, enabling many more generations to continue

to receive excellent health care – just like his mother did –

right in our own community.

Leaving a Legacy

John E. Miller, Past President of the Thompson Health Board of Directors and President of Miller Nurseries, was pleased to support the Thompson Guild’s annual plant sale. In addition to helping raise funds for Thompson, the sale gave Associates the opportunity to shop for bedding plants, perennials and hanging baskets on site. Since 1976, the Canandaigua Lions Club has been active in the community, providing services that promote optimal sight and hearing – and supporting organizations such as Thompson Health. “Thompson offers excellent health care right in our own community,” says Mary Eileen Sykes. “Our club enjoys hosting bingo each month at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center – it’s certainly a bright spot in our day.” In addition to supporting Thompson, the Lions Club sponsors a wide variety of local events and youth-related programs. In May, the Canandaigua chapter of the Kiwanis K-Kids, a student-led community service organization comprised of 5th-grade students from Canandaigua Elementary School, presented a $1,000 check to Thompson Health representatives. The funds, raised from the group’s cookie dough and bake sale, were used to purchase neonatal and pediatric stethoscopes for F.F. Thompson Hospital. F.F. Thompson Foundation 2010 Repor t on Giving

During April 2010, approximately 100 runners took part in the 1st Annual Poppa Bill’s Angels Run for Hope. All proceeds from this 5K race, named in memory of Bill DiCicco, benefited charities and organizations that are dedicated to helping cancer patients and their families, including Thompson Health’s Sands Cancer Center. “While Bill was a patient, our family became aware of the Sands Cancer Center Patient Needs Fund and thought contributing to it would be an ideal way to give back to everyone who helped us,” says Martha Eddy DiCicco, Event Coordinator for the race. “We’re pleased to support the Sands Cancer Center – and to continue honoring the memory of a wonderful man who always had a smile for those who shared the treatment room with him.”
