ThomsonNOW on Sakai Case Study
• Jacqui has taught at Wake Tech for about 7 years
• taught online for about 5 years
• Her online courses are Math 070 (Introductory Algebra) and Math 080 (Intermediate Algebra).
My needs are pretty simple:• I want an integrated product
• quality course materials (math content)
• very user friendly delivery method.
• delivery method easily adapted to all disciplines
• easily managed
• a less expensive option.
Jacqui’s Tactics: • I used ThomsonNOW for the math piece
of the course (tutorials, homework, and quizzes).
• My students completed roughly 50 tutorials, 50 homework assignments, and 13 quizzes within ThomsonNOW.
• I used Sakai to deliver announcements, post lab assignments, and post some grades.
…Tactics
• My students had 16 lab assignments that they accessed through Sakai.
• I posted those 16 grades in the Sakai gradebook along with the grades from 3 tests and a final exam.
Next Steps…
• What I would like to see next is partial integration where my students would not have to go to 2 different websites for course information.
• A single sign-on would allow students to go to one website and see the Sakai shell of their course and then click on a link to access the tutorials, homework, quizzes, etc.
• Ultimately, I would like a total integration between the two products which include a gradebook integration.
Meeting Jacqui’s course goals:
• 2006: Single sign-on
• 2007: Integrated gradebook
• Partners: – Pilot schools– Unicon / OLI– you
