Welcome to our 2011 Price ListRaw material costs, for example steel and plastic, continue to rise at a somewhat alarming rate but our price increaseshave been kept to a minimum. We have retained the carriage paid order figure (£100.00 for orders placed online or £200.00for orders placed using any other method). After careful negotiating with our carriers, we have reduced the carriage chargesfor most orders where these are applicable.Particularly, over the last two or three years, the growth in the interest in beekeeping and the huge number of new beekeepershas been amazing. Our relatively small factory in Wragby has been under enormous pressure to produce the beehivesand equipment and, therefore, we had started to look for new premises. The obvious place was the Industrial Estate onthe edge of Wragby but, in November 2009, a local company sadly went into liquidation. The silver lining in this cloud wasthat the premises were just two miles from Wragby and would be almost ideal for our expansion – 32 acres which includedindustrial buildings, a large office complex with 75 offices and even three lakes. On May 12th 2010, we finally completed the deal and purchased the whole site. It must be the largest private beekeepinginvestment ever in the UK. You can see some photographs of the re-named Beehive Business Park on our back and frontcover.It is well known that one of the most stressful times of a person’s life is moving house. We can tell you for certain thatmoving a factory which has been on the same site for almost 100 years is much more stressful and involves interminablehard work and thought.One of the first jobs was to get the builders in and knock down the office walls on the ground floor to make our retail shopand despatch department. That was completed in early November. The shop is light and airy and more than twice the sizeof the Wragby shop. Adjoining that is the despatch department, also much bigger so we were able to design a better systemto pick and pack the orders quickly and efficiently. So, before the snow arrived, the sewing department, shop, despatchand most of the stock moved and we started the difficult phase of working on two sites.Next to be organised was the engineering department. At Wragby, we had separate small areas – one made the smokers;one made the metal ends and castellated spacers; one made the wax moulds and another made the extractors. After themove to Rand, much of it conducted in freezing temperatures and with piles of snow everywhere, we now have one largeindustrial building with all these products being manufactured together. There is plenty of room for the extra welding bays,the new metal machines and the extra staff needed to manufacture. Everything in one building, including the raw materials,means that journeys from one end of the site to the other at Wragby to cut some metal or collect some extractor barrelswill some become a distant memory. The efficiency saving should be significant and, of course, these will be passed onto the beekeeper.After Christmas, it was the turn of the wax plant, including the wiring department. The old steam boiler at Wragby is out ofdate and expensive to maintain so we have invested in two electric boilers to melt the beeswax. We are now able to meltone tonne of beeswax and can do this twice a day. Again, in this department, we were struggling for space at Wragby but,at Rand, there is plenty of space for all the machinery and the wiring department have an area double the size.Remaining at Wragby as we write this (early February) are the offices and the woodworking department. We hope to movethe offices in the coming ten days and the trickiest job of moving the woodworking machinery has just begun.Some of our machines are relatively old – but solid, reliable and updated. The first machines to go will be the sectionmachines, built specially for E.H. Taylor in the 1930’s and moved to Wragby in 1984. Quickly following will be the othermachines in Wragby, including the fully automatic cross-cut. They will join the new machines purchased in 2010 alreadyhoused in the new workshop. This building at Rand has already been fitted with a 21st century dust extraction systemwhich will take the sawdust and shavings outside to a huge hopper which will be fed automatically into a Biomass boiler.This will be used to blow hot air back into the building for heating. It’s going to be a stressful but exciting few weeks aheadas the department takes shape in its new home.In addition to the three building described above, there are also three large sheds which we are using for storage. Previously,one of these was used by the directors of UCS (the original owners and developers of the site) as a helicopter hanger so,of course, this will always be known as the helicopter shed. Close by is a football pitch sized, fenced piece of top qualitydeep tarmac – ideal for the timber yard.Sadly, the office building had been somewhat neglected in the last few years but the quality of the original workmanshipand materials was very high so, all that was needed was some TLC and many tins of paint and varnish to bring it back toits former glory. At the entrance to the new shop, we have a large area of new paving with THORNE written into it. Passingaircraft and Google Earth will easily see this! One of the large rooms in the office building, complete with chandeliers and balcony, was used for a boardroom. As wehave only four directors, we have decided to offer this room, free of charge, to any beekeeping group who want to have ameeting or run a course. Another fantastic facility is the 80 seat restaurant. This is now open for customers and our staffto have a cup of tea or light lunch. Trained chef, Stuart White is running it, re-named The Buzz Stop, and will be happy toarrange the catering for any course or meeting.For everyone involved, this has been an exciting and challenging time. We want to thank the local authorities and the EastMidland Development Agency for their advice and support. The biggest thanks, however, go to our loyal staff. They, too,are excited about the opportunity to work in a much improved factory and have worked tirelessly to make it happen. As you can see from the photographs on the cover, the landscaped grounds are stunning. Carp filled lakes, indigenousBritish trees and large grassed areas have been expertly designed to surround the industrial site. Each spring, dozens ofGreylag and Canada Geese fly back to Rand from their migration south. Fly, drive, cycle or walk, we invite beekeepersfrom far and wide to visit us in our new home.

As with our usual beeswax conversion, the more beeswax you bring, the better rate you get. The tablesbelow show exactly (to the nearest quarter of a sheet) how many sheets per pound we swap.

For example, you have 10lbs. beeswax to “straight swap”. You will use the top table. You want some BSDeep Wired and some Section Squares. You can decide; maybe 4lbs BS Deep Wired (that will give you 15sheets), that leaves 6lbs. for Section Squares (263 sheets).

If you need any help working it out, our staff will be pleased to help you.

We work out to the nearest sheet, always higher rather than lower.
