There=s never been a GI Kentucky Derby contender quite like

No Parole (Violence), who stayed undefeated when winning

Saturday=s Premier Night Prince S. at Delta Downs. He may not

be the best 3-year-old in the country, but he is certainly the

most intriguing. How good is he? It=s impossible to tell.

His route to the Derby has included a maiden race, an

allowance race and the Prince, all races against fellow Louisiana-

breds. Normally, anyone winning those races wouldn=t register

on anyone=s radar, but this horse is different. The >TDN Rising

Star= won his first two races by a combined 27 1/2 lengths and

then scored a ridiculously easy win in the Prince by 6 1/2

lengths. Owned by Maggi Moss, he=s been so dominant and

impressive in each of his races that it=s hard not to get excited.

AHis temperament is great,@ trainer Tom Amoss said. AHe has

that gifted athleticism and we=ve seen how that is so important

in the Derby preps and in the Derby. I=m really excited to see

what he does. He deserves the chance to see what he can do in

one of these preps.@

No Parole=s first two wins came at six furlongs and Amoss was

anxious to see what he would do when stretched out to a mile

and around two turns in the Delta Downs race.

OVER EMPHASIZE TOPS FASIG FEBRUARY

OPENER by Christie DeBernardis

LEXINGTON, KY--The multiple graded stakes placed broodmare

prospect Over Emphasize (Overanalyze) topped the opening

session of the two-day Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale Monday

with a final bid of $150,000 from bloodstock agent Andre Lynch.

The day=s top short yearling was a $140,000 son of Connect,

purchased by Brian Graves on behalf of the Blue Sky Stable

pinhooking partnership.

AIt is hit or miss at a smaller sale like this,@ Graves said.

AFebruary sales are up and down. There is not as much quality

as November and January. I think there is fair value for a good

one when they bring it in there.@

A total of 180 horses changed hands Monday for a gross of

$3,369,200, with eight horses earning six-figure price tags. The

median was $8,000 and the average was $18,718. Seventy-three

horses failed to meet their reserves for an RNA rate of 28.9%.

Against the level of competition he was facing, No Parole, who

went off at odds of 1-20, didn=t get much of a test. But the

distance was obviously not a problem. Ridden by James Graham,

he went right to the front and was allowed to coast on the lead

through fractions of :49.39 and 1:14.38. Graham let him run a

little bit down the lane before wrapping up on his mount late.

The only negative was that he didn=t run particularly fast. The

final time of 1:39.93 was good enough for a Beyer Figure of only

79. Amoss was quick to dismiss the number.

AWhen you talk about race set-up, we were able to control

things early on and slow the pace down quite a bit,@ he said.

AThe rider=s job is to give the horse the best chance to win. So I

don=t want to hear about this speed figure or that speed figure

right now because you are not taking into account how the race

developed. I=m more interested in how did my horse do it and

did he have the ability to quicken going that far. The answer is

yes. He did it and did it well. That=s exciting.@

No Parole ran a 90 Beyer in his first start and an 87 in his

second. Those figures put him more in the neighborhood of a

Derby contender, but they, too, are open to further

examination. Whenever a horse is winning by such a wide

margin against such inferior competition, they are rarely asked

for their very best.

What is No Parole=s best? Amoss doesn=t know. But the

answer will come soon enough. Amoss knows that it is time to

test his horse against open company in a traditional Derby prep.

AWe will look at one, possibly two, races over the next month-

and-a-half and make a decision whether he is a legitimate

Kentucky Derby horse or not,@ he said.

Amoss said he hasn=t picked which race will be next for No

Parole, but said the Mar. 14 GII Rebel S. at Oaklawn is a

possibility. That=s the same race that Bob Baffert has mentioned

as a possible start for the much-hyped Nadal (Blame), the

winner of Sunday=s GII San Vicente S. at Santa Anita.

Oaks Field Looks Loaded The fillies may take a back seat to the colts this time of year,

but the field for the GI Kentucky Oaks is shaping up to be as

good, perhaps, as any that has ever raced in the sport=s biggest

race for 3-year-old fillies.

Going into the weekend, the known commodities were Eclipse

Award winner British Idiom (Flashback), the very exciting Taraz

(Into Mischief), Finite (Munnings) and Bast (Uncle Mo), the

winner of three Grade I races.

Now, there=s Venetian Harbor (Munnings). In her second

career start and her first on dirt, she broke her maiden by

10 3/4 lengths.

Stretching out from six furlongs to a mile, Venetian Harbor

returned in Saturday=s GII Las Virgenes S. and drew off to win by

9 1/4 lengths. Bob Baffert finished second and third with

Gingham (Quality Road) and Stellar Sound (Tapit), respectively.

AWhen you have the speed my filly has and can carry it, it=s

kind of like having Songbird,@ trainer Richie Baltas said. AI=m not

saying she=s the next Songbird, but they are the kind that horses

start chasing and they can never catch up. It=s pretty freaky how

she ran. California speed is a lot better than people give it credit

for. You are running here against Bob Baffert and he=s got the

strongest young horses of anybody in the country. He has by far,

hands down, the best horses in the country.@

Baltas wasn=t sure where Venetian Harbor would wind up

next, but said the Apr. 4 GII Santa Anita Oaks was a possibility.

Pennsylvania Tracks Must Focus on Betting Lost amid the uproar over the Governor of Pennsylvania=s

attempt to empty out the Race Horse Development Fund was

the poor record of the state=s tracks when it comes to building

up handle. The takeout rate in the state has always been

excessive and that=s one of the main reasons the tracks handle

so little and why they are so dependent on slot revenues.

Eighty-eight percent of the purse money in Pennsylvania comes

from the slots.

With a 30% takeout on trifecta and superfectas, Parx was the

worst offender. In January, it was announced that the takeout

on those two wagers had been reduced to 25% and the takeout

on Pick 3's and Pick 4's had been dropped from 26% to 25%. The

take on exactas at all three tracks is 20% and the take on win,

place and show is 17%.

ABesides selling programs and hot dogs and sodas and having a

spectacle here, we sell bets. If we don=t sell enough bets, we=re

not going to be able to pay for a lot of what we do here,@

Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen=s Association (PTHA)

President Sal DeBunda told racing writer Dick Jerardi. AOver the

years, we=ve tried to find more and more ways to sell more bets.

We=ve been working with the frontside and we=ve finally come

to an agreement that we=re going to try something different.

We=re going to lower the takeout on some of the bets that are

made here in hopes that will attract more bettors to Parx races

rather than other jurisdictions.@

The takeout reduction at Parx should be a first step. The rate is

still way too high and puts racing at a competitive disadvantage

versus other forms of gambling.

As this situation has reminded us, the politicians can take away

casino funds any time they want. They can=t take away racing=s

share of handle. With its back against the wall, Pennsylvania

racing needs to bolster the handle. Let the same state that has

been the poster child for excessive takeout structures now lead

the way by slashing the take and giving the bettor the type of

fair shake that is so hard to find at the racetrack.

From the XFL, a Lesson on Transparency The reboot of the XFL received positive reviews from most

Monday morning quarterbacks, many of which liked the various

innovations the football league had implemented. The list

includes allowing the television viewer to hear and watch the

replay officials discuss a controversial or potentially missed call.

The process is 100% transparent, as the replay officials discuss

what they saw, watch replays of the play in question and then

come to a conclusion about the play. The viewer at home is also

treated to live discussions between the coaches and players.

What does this have to do with horse racing? Plenty. It shows

that the XFL gets it, that the consumer wants full transparency

and doesn=t want to feel like they have been kept in the dark,

particularly when gambling is involved. The football replay

booth is much like the stewards= booth at the track. Except, that

is, that the majority of stewards make their decisions about

possible disqualifications in private and aren=t required to issue

the betting public an explanation. Never was this more apparent

than in last year=s Kentucky Derby, when everyone was put on

hold while the Churchill Downs stewards debated the race.

Things went from bad to worse when the stewards came out to

meet the media and issued a bland statement without taking

any questions. It was a debacle.

Let the public hear what is being said among the stewards.

Make the stewards come on closed circuit television after a race

in which there was an inquiry or an objection and explain why

they did what they did. The secretive nature of these rulings

doesn=t do anyone any good.

Over Emphasize Tops Fasig Opener (cont. from p1)

During the 2019 opening session, 146 head grossed

$4,677,200. The average was $32,036 and the median was

$18,000. A total of 61 horses were led from the ring unsold for

an buy-back rate of 29.4%. The session=s 13 six-figure purchases

were led by eventual $300,000 sale topper Cheekaboo (Unusual

Heat).

AClearly, if you looked at the catalogue and analyzed it,

tomorrow is the much strong day in terms of quality offerings,@

said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. AI thought today

went as expected. For the pages you turned down in your

catalogue before the sale and said, >There should be good

interest in this one,= there was good interest in that one. For the

horses you thought won=t be easy, it wasn=t easy. It is just a

reflection of the reality of the marketplace. There are just some

horses we offer that have limited commercial value.@

Lynch Keeps Busy at Fasig Bloodstock agent Andre Lynch was determined for the mares

who caught his eye, going to $150,000 for Over Emphasize

(Overanalyze) (Hip 184) and fighting off a stubborn foe, who bid

on the phone with Fasig President Boyd Browning, to take home

Palace Princess (Hard Spun) (Hip 186) two hips later.

Consigned by St. George Sales, Over Emphasize only won one

of her eight starts, but placed in a pair of graded events in the

summer of 2019 for earnings of $109,745. A $40,000 KEESEP

buy, the session topper was campaigned by Mel and Jean

Annuzzi and trainer Mike McCarthy. She is a half to stakes

winner Allanah (Scat Daddy) and sold as a racing/broodmare

prospect.

AI bought her for myself at the moment,@ Lynch said. AShe is a

lovely mare trained by Michael McCarthy. We ran against her a

couple of times with Maxim Rate (Exchange Rate). I don=t know

what I am going to breed her to yet, maybe Justify.@

Palace Princess is out of a daughter of Hall of Famer Azeri (Jade

Hunter), who produced MGSW & GISP Wine Princess

(Ghostzapper). She was sold by Taylor Made Sales Agency as a

broodmare prospect.

AI bought her for myself and a friend. I haven=t told my friend

yet,@ Lynch said with a grin. AI was thinking maybe Uncle Mo or

American Pharoah.@

Graves Strikes For Connect Colt Brian Graves took home the day=s most expensive yearling on

behalf of his Blue Sky Stables pinhooking partnership, signing

the ticket at $140,000 for a son of Connect colt (hip 254).

AHe is a Saratoga-type individual, so that is probably the game

plan to take him up to Saratoga and see how we do,@ said

Graves. AYou don=t have to wait too long.@

Goff Scoops Up Bernardini Mare Arkansan Dash Goff came out on top of a lively round of

bidding to acquire Me and Mine (Bernardini) (hip 127), in foal to

Kantharos, for $135,000 at Fasig-Tipton. A $40,000 claim by

Kingdom Bloodstock at Laurel in 2017, the bay had her first foal

last year, a filly by Maclean=s Music, and was consigned Monday

by Hill >n= Dale Sales Agency.

Out of SP Oneofacat (Deputy Minister), Me and Mine is a half

to three stakes-placed runners. European champion Hold That

Tiger (Storm Cat) and GI Belmont S. winner Editor=s Note (Forty

Niner) are under the second dam.

AShe is a nice mare,@ Goff said. ABane and Chris Welker keep

my horses and I am just trying to get a couple of nice mares to

replace the ones I=ve had.@

Me and Mine brings Goff=s broodmare band up to three and

he has 15 horses altogether, focusing on the Arkansas and

Oklahoma-bred programs.

AI won the fourth race at Oaklawn [Sunday], an Arkansas-bred

maiden,@ said Goff, while sporting an Oaklawn hat. AI am mainly

buying Arkansas-breds. What is happening at Oaklawn is unreal

with the expansion and the purses. I have started really building

up racing there and Oklahoma.@

DiRico Working on Retirement Plan at Fasig Joe DiRico has been in the game a long time, even picking out

MGSW Disco Rico (Citidancer) for his father Alfred DiRico back in

1999. With retirement looming, he was busy at Fasig Monday,

expanding his broodmare band, purchasing a pair of six-figure

mares. He went to $135,000 for Samara (Hard Spun) (hip 244)

and $100,000 for My Bronx Tail (Speightstown) (hip 160).

AI am thinking of retiring,@ DiRico, seated alongside advisor

Jack Harvey, said. AI have free time on my hands, so I want to get

more into the horses. I have some more funds at my disposal

now.@

Samara was claimed by Michael Dubb for $40,000 at Saratoga

in 2018. The Don Alberto-bred mare closed out her career with a

trio of wins last winter, capped by a victory in the Captiva Island

S. at Gulfstream. She RNA=d for $185,000 at Keeneland

November and was sold by Brookdale here as a broodmare

prospect.

AShe had a beautiful presence and she was a real physical

specimen,@ DiRico said. AShe looked like Mike Tyson. You have

Hard Spun on top and Storm Cat on the bottom. She beat a 3-5

shot in that stakes race in Florida and won her last three races. I

am happy to have her.@

He continued, AI am going to breed her to my stallion Dr. Disco

(Disco Rico). I want to give him a leg up. He is sort of an

unknown sire and I want to give him a shot with some good

mares.@

Earlier in the session, DiRico purchased My Bronx Tail, a

daughter of GSW Winding Way (Malibu Moon), who is a full-

sister to MGSW & GISP Kauai Katie (Malibu Moon). Gainesway

consigned the broodmare prospect on behalf of Saratoga Seven

Racing Partners LLC.

AThe other one I bought earlier is going to go to Mitole,@

DiRico said. AI watched her last race at Aqueduct and she pulled

away from the field and broke 1:35 for the mile. She has really

good mechanics in the way she traveled. Being by Speightstown

out of a graded dam, I thought I couldn=t go wrong.@

DiRico=s Monday purchases, plus a mare named Grace=s

Treasure (Rockport Harbor) whom he purchased for $100,000 at

KEEJAN, will be sent to New York to drop their foals. Grace=s

Treasure is also scheduled to visit Dr. Disco, who stands at the

Empire State=s Keane Stud.

Goldsmith, 57, defeated a field that totaled 694 entries from

of $30 behind Goldsmith after drawing to within $2 of

Goldsmith qualified for the NHC in a live-money tournament at

Lone Star Park on his birthday weekend last July. He was off to a

slow beginning on Day 1, collecting just $69, but sprung to life

Saturday, aided by his selection of 21-1 Admiralty Pier (English

Channel) in the GIII Tampa Bay S. He entered Sunday=s Final

Table in fourth position and selected three winners and a 24-1

place horse in his first five plays.

AI was just trying to find something that's going to win, like

anything else. I'm not a numbers guy,@ Goldsmith explained. AI

look for horses that are in troubleYwhatever. Bad break. Excuse

trips. Bad trips. And in this place you've got to bet long shots.

Most of these are horses I'm not going to easily play. It's hard.

You've got to find winners at all different race tracks.

He added, ASome of it is just searching for and

lookingYbecause you're not going to win this thing betting a

chalk. I was feeling good (after cashing the first three at the Final

Table) but I was still sweating.@

With a near $20 advantage entering Sunday=s eighth and final

mandatory, Goldsmith allowed himself to celebrate midway

through, knowing that none of the challengers had selected

either of the top two finishers.

AI got lucky for two, three days. Two big days I got lucky. Those

days come,@ he said.

The 2020 NHC finals awarded cash to the top 10% overall from

a total purse of $2,997,500. Of that total, $50,000 went to the

top 20 in today=s Consolation Tournament, which was won by

former turf writer Dick Jerardi.

MCGAUGHEY SUSPENDED 15 DAYS BY OHIO

AUTHORITIES by Bill Finley

Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey has begun serving a

15-day suspension handed down by the Ohio Racing Commission

after a horse he trained tested positive for the prohibited

medication hydrochlorothiazide. The suspension began Feb. 6 and

runs through Feb. 20. McGaughey was also fined $500.

The test came from a Sept. 9, 2019 race at Belterra Park and

involved the mare Tactical Affair (Tapit). Tactical Affair, who is

owned by Phipps Stable, won the Sept. 9 allowance race, but

has been disqualified and placed last.

According to Bill Crawford, the executive director of the Ohio

State Racing Commission, McGaughey, after receiving news of

the positive, appealed, requested a split sample and that DNA

testing on the sample also be done. Once the split sample also

revealed the presence of the drug, McGaughey dropped his

appeal.

Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic and is used in humans to

combat high blood pressure.

McGaughey told the Paulick Report that he had no knowledge

of how the drug got into the horse=s system.

ABasically, it was a stable mistake,@ McGaughey said. AI=m

taking the blame for it and doing my days. Obviously, we

weren=t trying to give anything to the horse. It=s one of those

things that happens.@

During his suspension, McGaughey=s horses will run under the

name of his assistant trainer, Robert Medina. McGaughey has a

spotless reputation within the industry and he, along with he

Phipps family, has often called on the sport to tighten its rules

regarding drugs. The thoroughbredrulings.com website lists

McGaughey with only two infractions since 2014, neither of

which involved drug positives and resulted in small fines.

GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner Bayern (Offlee Wild), died at

Helen Alexander=s Middlebrook Farm after producing a healthy

filly by GI Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. The 18-year-old mare

was bred by Alexander in partnership with her mother, Helen

Groves, and sister, Dorothy Matz.

Bayern, purchased by Kaleem Shah for $320,000 at the 2013

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale, won the 2014 Classic, as well as

that year=s GI William Hill Haskell Invitational S., GII Pennsylvania

Derby, and GII Woody Stephens S.

Alittlebitearly had no reported foal in 2019, but produced a

colt by American Pharoah in 2018.

NY JOCK GETS PENALTY OVERTURNED IN INJURED

HORSE DISMOUNT CASE by T.D. Thornton

An Aqueduct apprentice jockey who last year was suspended

10 days for allegedly not dismounting from his injured horse in a

timely manner had his penalty wiped off the books via appeal by

the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) Monday.

The case involved jockey Benjamin Hernandez, who rode Tiger

Man (Desert Party) in the eighth race Feb. 8, 2019. According to

the Equibase chart, the 0-for-9 maiden-claimer Acompleted the

half hobbling its way to the quarter pole, was eased [and] then

pulled up.@

The NYSGC=s Equine Breakdown, Death, Injury and Incident

Database noted that Tiger Man Asustained injury to left front leg,

[was] ambulanced off track and subsequently euthanized next

morning due to poor prognosis.@

Executive Director Robert Williams read into the record that

the state steward at Aqueduct alleged a Afailure to ride in a

professional manner@ when citing the reasoning behind the

10-day penalty. ASpecifically, [Hernandez] was accused of failing

to protect the best interest of his mount by not dismounting

when his horse illustrated distress.@

Hernandez appealed, and his case was heard over three days

in June and July. In a Dec. 30 written report, the hearing officer

recommended that the finding of the violation be upheld, but

that the penalty be reduced to five days.

Chairman Barry Sample said Monday that after the

commissioners read the full report, they voted 4-0 to Amodify@

the hearing officer=s recommendation to instead Aprovide for no

suspension.@

Monday=s NYSGC agenda was extremely light in terms of

actionable items. The only other case heard on appeal involved

charity bingo violations by a volunteer fire department. From

the call of order to adjournment, the entire NYSGC meeting

clocked in at six minutes, 40 seconds.

Two issues of importance that are being widely debated by

racing and gaming commissions nationwide--whip reform and a

possible phasing out of Lasix--both figured to come up under the

Aold business@ heading, but neither did.

At the December meeting, the NYSGC directed staff Ato

undertake a review of Lasix use changes nationwide and the

progress of NYRA=s reported Lasix use changes and report

findings at the January Commission meeting.@

In addition, staff in December were also Adirected to discuss

the proposed California crop use proposal with the NYRA jockey

colony and with other leading regulatory jurisdictions and report

back at a future Commission meeting.@

But Monday, Sample cited the absence of commissioner Peter

Moschetti, who had a previous commitment and was

unavailable to attend the NYSGC meeting, as the reason the

NYSGC would put off discussing those major topics.

Sample said that the issue of the crop Awas of keen interest to

commissioner Moschetti, and the Lasix issue was of keen

interest for commissioner [John] Crotty. Due to the fact that

commissioner Moschetti is not with us today, we=d like to take

that matter up at our next meeting, where we could have more

of a comprehensive discussion of the matter.@

INDIANA DERBY HIGHLIGHTS 2020 INDIANA

GRAND SEASON Indiana Grand Racing and Casino will offer 37 stakes worth a

record $4.65 million in 2020. The stakes schedule is headlined

by the $500,000 GIII Indiana Derby which will be run July 11.

The Derby card will include six stakes worth over $1.1 million.

The card will also feature the $200,000 GIII Indiana Oaks. The

Warrior Veterans S. will be run as the Jonathan B. Schuster

Memorial for the first time in 2020. The $100,000 race was

renamed in honor of the former vice president and general

manager at Indiana Grand who passed away in late 2019.

Indiana=s richest turf races, the $200,000 Caesars S. and

$200,000 Indiana Grand S. will be held Sept. 9. The track will

introduce two Indiana-sired stakes races set for Oct. 17, the

$150,000 Indiana Stallions Championship and the $150,000

Indiana Ladies Championship.

AWe are anticipating another great season of racing at Indiana

Grand,@ said the track=s director of racing Kevin Greely.

T.I.P. ANNOUNCES SHOWS, AWARDS,

AMBASSADORS FOR 2020 The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) has

approved nearly 7,000 awards and classes at more than 1,400

shows in 41 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces for 2020.

Awards are to be distributed in a variety of disciplines,

including eventing, dressage, Western and English pleasure,

hunter/jumper, endurance, Western performance, games, and

polocrosse. Awards are also available at some events for

Thoroughbreds within their first two years of showing or for

Thoroughbreds within two years of their last start. A full

calendar can be viewed here.

T.I.P. will also host two shows at the Kentucky Horse Park in

conjunction with New Vocations/All-Thoroughbred Charity

Shows. The first show Sept. 4-6 will offer classes for classes for

hunters, jumpers, Western pleasure, and English pleasure. The

second show Oct. 4 will include classes for dressage, Western

LAUREL TO HOST FAIR HILL RACES The Maryland Jockey Club has entered into an agreement with

the Cecil County Breeders= Fair and the Fair Hill Foundation to

stage the 86th renewal of the Fair Hill Races at Laurel Park

Saturday, May 23, 2020.

The temporary move is necessitated by ongoing construction

to the turf course at Fair Hill which began just after last year=s

Fair Hill races and includes track realignment, adding advanced

irrigation, and building out wider, sweeping, and banked turns

to enhance safety measures. The surface was also upgraded to a

Kentucky Bluegrass mix that needs time to mature this spring

before it can be used for competition.

for allowing us to host the Fair Hill Races this year and keep its

10 and traveled strongly throughout. Held together into the long

Tokyo straight, she opened up immediately when slipped a bit

or rein inside the final 400 meters and scampered home a

convincing 10-length winner. Fellow US-bred Precious Girl

(Speightstown) ran on center track for second while no menace

to the winner. A $410,000 Keeneland September purchase by

Carlo Vaccarezza, Lecce Baroque drilled an eighth of a mile in

POWERFUL PARTNERS INPLAY FOR WALDGEIST

It is almost half a century since Ballylinch Stud took delivery of

its previous winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. In 1970,

Sassafras (Fr) (Sheshoon {GB}) became the first horse to get the

better of Nijinsky II (Northern Dancer), beating the Triple Crown

winner by a head at Longchamp before taking up residence in

the beautiful tiled box which was once home to The Tetrarch

(Ire) (Roi Herode {Fr}).

That stable still stands away from the main stallion yard at

Ballylinch and within its historic walls now is the 2019 Arc

winner Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who caused an upset of

his own when scuppering the chances of the Arc hat-trick seeker

Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). His win was no fluke, however,

and Enable was far from the only horse he had to beat. Looking

back over the finishing order from Oct. 6 last year, one finds the

two best 3-year-old colts of the season, Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni

{Fr}) and Japan (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), along with Magical (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}), the winner of four Group 1 races in 2019

including the Champion S. a fortnight after the Arc.

Since that glorious day in Paris, Waldgeist has gained one final

bit of recognition for his distinguished racing career in running

Enable and Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) to a

three-way tie for the title of Longines World's Best Racehorse.

He follows the brilliant Sea The Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) as

the last Arc winner before him to retire to stud in Ireland and

now has a high bar to aim for in his second career. Cont. p2

ARQANA SEASON STARTS WITH MIXED FARE The wraps have already been lifted from Tattersalls and Goffs

and this week it is the turn of Arqana to host its mixed February

Sale to start the auction year rolling in Deauville.

The >something for everyone' nature of these sales is always a

draw even in the depths of winter, and though this lower-key

debut will have none of the glitz and glamour of the August Sale,

history relates that there are always gems to be found. Of

course only time will tell whether any of the 431 lots catalogued

will have the appeal of Sister Nat (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}), who

was bought here as a short yearling in 2016 for i20,000Ca

fraction of the value that her subsequent racing career and

family ties make the Group 3-winning half-sister to Sottsass (Fr)

(Siyouni {Fr}) and Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) worth

In this pursuit he won't struggle for a helping hand. Crucially,

Ballylinch Stud has a knack for finding and making stallions,

aided by some strategic partnerships. In the case of Waldgeist

we find the familiar name of Dietrich Von Boetticher's Gestut

Ammerland as co-owner and breeder, and the new stallion will

be able to call on support from that Bavarian farm's broodmare

ranks. The German link is strengthened through another in the

breeding partnership of Waldgeist, the Jacobs family's Newsells

Park Stud, which formed a third of the trio along with Coolmore.

Ammerland and Ballylinch have already teamed up

successfully in the stud career of another former Andre Fabre

trainee, the dual French Classic winner Lope De Vega (Ire)

(Shamardal), who now heads the roster of five stallions at

Ballylinch.

"Ammerland and Newsells Park Stud are both exceptionally

good breeders and they've

both shown they can breed

Group 1 winners on a fairly

regular basis so it's great to

be working with them on this

project with Waldgeist.

We're working on the same

type of approach as we did

with Lope De Vega when we

started him," says Ballylich

Stud's managing director

John O'Connor. "Both

Ammerland and ourselves

will send Waldgeist 14 or 15

mares each, including some

of the mares who worked

very well with Lope De Vega

like Burning Heights (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}), who is the dam of

Blue De Vega (Ger), who was one of Lope De Vega's early group

winners."

Ammerland is also sending Lope De Vega's listed-winning

daughter Sassella (Ire), as well as the Group 1 winner Grey Lilas

(Ire) (Danehill), who is already the dam of the Prix de Diane

winner Golden Lilac (Ire) and Australian Group 3 winner Grey

Lion (Ire), both by Galileo (Ire).

The combination of Galileo and Danehill blood has had

particularly noted success and it is the opportunity to combine

these two through Waldgeist which is one of the appealing

elements for O'Connor, who says, "I think one of the interesting

things about this particular horse and his pedigree is that he is a

top-class Galileo whose dam line is completely free of all the

lines that have done so well with Galileo himself. So Danehill,

Storm Cat, Pivotal (GB): he's very open to sending mares from

any of those lines which I think will be a big advantage to him."

Also of advantage has to be the fact that Waldgeist is just one

of the latest high-class performers from a distinguished dynasty.

His dam Waldlerche (Ger), a daughter of Monsun (Ger) bred by

Newsells Park Stud, won the G3 Prix Penelope and is from the

celebrated Gestut Ravensberg family of the German St Leger

winner Wurftaube (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), who is Waldgeist's

third dam. Waldlerche has also produced the G2 Prix de

Malleret winner Waldlied (GB) to Galileo's son New Approach

(Ire) and her 2-year-old of last season, the >TDN Rising Star=

Waldkonig (GB) (Kingman {GB}), looked a group horse in the

making on his sole appearance for John Gosden.

"I'm always positive about young stallions whose own dams

are really good," O'Connor notes. "In this particular case,

Waldlerche is a group winner herself and she has bred a Group 1

winner with her first foal and a Group 2 winner with her second

foal. That's an outstanding

start, and of course

Waldkonig looks very

exciting. It is worth bearing in

mind while we're all excited

about him, though, that he's

won a maiden so far as a

2-year old but by that time

Waldgeist had already won a

Group 1. He was much more

precocious than people give

him credit for."

That juvenile Group 1 in

question was the Criterium

de Saint-Cloud on his third

start, in which Waldgeist

beat a field which included

two subsequent Derby winnersCWings Of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi

{Ire}) and Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})CCaulfield Cup winner Best

Solution (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and the Melbourne Cup winner

Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Newsells Park Stud reinforces the Danehill approach by

sending his granddaughter Date With Destiny (Ire), the sole

offspring of George Washington (Ire), who is the dam of

Galileo's G3 Royal Whip S. winner Beautiful Morning (GB). Also

on the list from the British-based farm is Keene Dancer (GB)

(Danehill Dancer {Ire}), a daughter of G1 Prix de l'Opera winner

Kinnaird (Ire) (Dr Devious {Ire}) and half-sister to Berkshire (GB)

(Mount Nelson {GB}). Newsells Park Stud's dual Grade I winner

Dynaforce (Dynaformer), who has worked well with a son of

Galileo to produce the listed winner Aljezeera (GB) (Frankel

{GB}), is another member of Waldgeist's first book, which is

Outlining a number of the Ballylinch broodmares who will be

heading to the farm's new stallion, O'Connor says, "We'll be

sending him Alava (Ire) (Anabaa), the dam of Forest Ranger (Ire)

(Lawman {Fr}), who is a Group 2 winner. We will give him a

certain amount of Danehill blood when we get a chance so we'll

also be sending Colonia (Fr), a Grade III winner in the United

States by Champs Elysees."

Ballylinch and Ammerland teamed up to buy a Siyouni (Fr)

4-year-old named So Unique (Fr) for i210,000 at Arqana in

December. "We thought she would suit him and she was a

group-placed 2-year-old," explains O'Connor.

Another daughter of Siyouni bought specifically to go to

Waldgeist is Barkaa (Fr), winner of the G3 Prix Vanteaux.

Charteuse (Fr), a listed winner and Group 3-placed daughter of

Lawman (Fr)Ca stallion O'Connor knows wellCis another in the

book having joined the Ballylinch herd in 2016 when she was

bought for 825,000gns.

Dookus (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}) was responsible for one of the

first-crop stakes winners for Frankel (GB) in the Ballylinch-bred

dual Group 3 winner Frankuus (Ire) and she will now be covered

by Waldgeist.

"Her family has gone very well with Galileo because her sister

[Pharmacist (Ire)] bred Red Rocks (Ire), so that will be a good

cross," says O'Connor. "Another mare from that family called

Fairy Dancer (Ire) is also going to him. She is a half-sister to Red

Rocks by Fastnet Rock (Aus)."

G2 Prix de Pomone winner Highlands Queen (Fr) (Mount

Nelson {GB}) is another well-credentialed mate for Waldgeist,

along with the proven producer Lady Livius (Ire) (Titus Livius

going to Waldgeist. She's by Sir Percy (GB), a horse I like a lot,

and we're also going to send a nice speed mare called Majestic

Dubawi (GB) who won the Firth of Clyde S. Dubawi blood seems

to go very well with Galileo and she had plenty of pace herself."

Among other mares purchased for Ballylinch Stud in recent

years, the G2 Balanchine winner L'Amour De Ma Vie (Dansili

{GB})Cbought for i600,000 when in foal to GalileoCis another

slated for Waldgeist, along with listed winner Planchart (Gio

Ponti) and the G2 Flying Childers S.-placed Sound of Guns (GB)

(Acclamation {GB}).

O'Connor adds, "Other shareholders are sending him some

nice mares, including Hit The Sky (Ire) (Cozzene) from

Knocktoran Stud, and the Aga Khan is sending Raydiya (Ire)

(Marju {Ire}), the dam of Group 2 winner Raydara (Ire). There

are some lovely mares coming from all over the continent.

What is interesting is that there are quite a few mares coming

from Germany from breeders looking to inbreed to the

Wurftaube family, and of course that family is valued so much

across the continent."

He continues, "The shareholders believe in him and that's a

huge start for any stallion, and when they are as good a

racehorse as he was with such a good pedigree they deserve a

shot. If we stand a stallion we only do it on the basis that we

think he's good enough to get behind him ourselves so we are

giving this fellow similar opportunities that we gave to Lope De

Vega when he started off. We are gratified by the support from

some of the leading breeders across Europe.

"The great thing about having a very strong syndicate behind a

young stallion when he is starting off is the support that they get

in their early years, which is crucial. The business has got to the

point where decisions on whether stallions are good or not are

made at an earlier and earlier stage, so getting good support

behind them for their first book of mares is now more important

than ever."

Among the 76 yearlings catalogued for sale this year is a

Wootton Bassett (GB) first foal of the 3-year-old winner Look At

That (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), herself a daughter of German Group 3

winner Peaceful Love (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}). The colt is

being offered as lot 351 by The Channel Consignment on behalf

of Al Shahania Stud.

There are three yearlings from the first crop of Al Shaqab's

young sire Ectot (Fr) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) catalogued and the

Group 1 winner's half-sister Merville (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}) is also

for sale, from the draft of Wertheimer et FrPre (lot 245) and in

foal to Australia (GB).

Also of interest among the broodmares on offer is the treble

winner Dixie Dance (Ire) (Orpen) (lot 265), a half-sister to G3

Dee S. winner South Easter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and daughter of

the dual Group 3 scorer Dance Treat (Nureyev). The 13-year-old

mare has already produced three winners, including the

listed-placed Light My Fire (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), and is being

offered by Haras du Cadran carrying a foal from the first crop of

Haras du Quesnay's Recoletos (Fr).

Another mare to be carrying to a first-season sire is the Haras

des Capucines-consigned dual winner More Than Famous (Fr), a

daughter of More Than Ready and granddaughter of Group 1

winner Infamy (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). The 10-year-old (lot

288) produced the listed winner Famous Wolf (Fr) (Kendargent

{Fr}) as her first foal and is now in foal to Coolmore's 2000

Guineas winner Saxon Warrior (Jpn) on a May 17 cover.

The sale is not just mixed in the sense of the horses' ages but

also in regard to Flat and National Hunt prospects and breeding

stock. Optimax (Fr) (Deportivo {Ire}) (lot 272), a 5-year-old

full-sister to the Grade 1-winning hurder Optimus Prime (Fr) will

have appeal to those searching for a young National Hunt

broodmare, while among those already in production is

Carmona (Fr) (Sleeping Car {Fr}), a winning sister to Grade 3

in foal to Buck's Boum (Fr), the full-brother of celebrated staying

hurdler Big Buck's (Fr).

A hallmark of the February Sales across Europe of late has

been the high clearance rate, and last year's sale at Arqana saw

a mark of 84% achieved through the sale of 353 horses for just

over i5 million and a top price of i500,000. The 2020 February

Sale takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday, starting at 10 a.m.

each day.

DEEP FIELD COLT LEADS THE WAY

Ricky Yiu is an ardent admirer of Deep Field and his

determination to purchase a youngster by him on day two of the

Inglis Classic Yearling Sale was realised when he outlaid a

session-topping $380,000 for Lot 398 from Torryburn Stud=s

consignment.

At a Glance:$ Day 2 grossed $18,239,500 from 270 lots sold,

compared to $11,614,000 last year from 230 lots sold.

The average was up $24,526 to $89,409, the median

rose $5117 to $70,000 and the clearance rate dropped

from 86% to 81%.

$ Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu was determined to secure a

son of Deep Field and he realised his wish when he paid

$380,000 for Lot 398 offered by Torryburn Stud.

$ Andrew Noblet will move to his new training quarters at

Ballarat next month and he=ll be taking Newhaven

Park=s Nicconi colt, Lot 377, with him after signing the

bill of sale for $370,000.

$ Agent George Moore couldn=t resist a son of

Hinchinbrook, Lot 328, and went over budget to claim

the colt offered by Yarraman Park Stud for $360,000.

$ Hong Kong Jockey Club recognises the quality on offer

to make a cameo appearance and secured its target

colt, Lot 449, a Deep Field youngster offered by

Goodwood Farm for $260,000.

Yiu Wins Bidding War Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu was locked in a bidding duel at the

Riverside Stables with McEvoy Mitchell Racing for the son of

Deep Field and was determined to go all the way to land the colt

for $380,000.

AThere haven=t been many in Hong Kong, but they have gone

well at trials and are very popular here in Australia,@ Yiu said. AI

thought he would roughly be $400,000. He=s a lovely individual

and I really wanted one nice yearling by Deep Field. I=ll leave him

here for 12 months or so. It depends how well he does before

we decide when to bring him to Hong Kong.@

The colt is a son of Raheights (Rahy {USA}), who was successful

on four occasions, who has produced the G3 PB Bell S. winner

Diddums (Snitzel) and the multiple winner and black-type

performer Brettan (Commands). The dam is a half-sister to the

Listed York Rockingham S. winner Bannock (Ire) (Bertolini {USA})

while the pedigree also features the former Canadian Horse of

the Year and GI Keeneland First Lady S. winner Never Retreat

(USA) (Smart Strike {USA}).

Pleasing Results Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said the sale continued

to gain momentum with trade again buoyant on day two.

AIf you look at those horses selling above $100,000, for

example, there has been 137 make $100,000 or more after

selling 540 lots, compared to 107 last year. That=s just showing

that it=s easier to sell those better types even if they are more

expensive at the moment,@ he said. AWe sold two lots for

$300,000 or more on Sunday and there were six today, so there

was a bit more depth at the top. We have mopped up a lot of

those passed in horses from yesterday and overall we=re

clearing 81% and it was at 78% yesterday.

AIt=s generally been positive. Most of them will have a draft

and they will sell something really well and they will come to

terms with the fact that they may have a yearling where the

stallion=s not fashionable. At the time we select these horses we

don=t know if some stallions are going to come into favour, out

of favour or stay as they are, so that just happens with every

sale. Most of them are pragmatic and that it is swings and

roundabouts.@

He added, AWith a sale that is averaging just under $90,000

and clearing 81% through the ring with a day to go, we are in

pretty good shape. To put it into perspective, this is our third cut

of yearlings. It is not Easter, it is not Premier and it is averaging

just under $90,000. It was only seven years ago that the Classic

Sale it was averaging $30,000. It shows the strength of the

industry and the market and we have diversified the buyers

coming to this sale in particular.@

Quality Addition Andrew Noblet is a man on the move in more ways than one

and his new stable at Ballarat will include a high-priced

youngster by Nicconi. Noblet, who will shift from Caulfield to

Ballarat next month, went to $370,000 for Lot 377 presented by

Newhaven Park.

AI=ve bought him for some long-time stable clients. I trained his

half-sister and had a big opinion of her, but unfortunately she

died late last year,@ Noblet said.

of her four starts before her

premature passing, are out of

Poison Ivy (Danehill Dancer

{Ire}), also the dam of the Listed

Hill Smith S. winner Lotion

(Good Journey {USA}).

AThis colt is a beautiful

athletic horse. The filly was

quite sleight, but he=s all

quality,@ Noblet said. AThat was

my last bid so it ended well.@

With Caulfield to close as a

training centre in 2023, Noblet decided to relocate ahead of

time and his new quarters at Ballarat will comprise of 30 boxes

and half a-dozen day yards.

AI=m really happy and looking forward to getting set up there,@

he said.

Hot on Hinchinbrook Outstanding sprinter Beat The Clock has been a flagship

performer in Hong Kong for Hinchinbrook and a son of the late

stallion won George Moore over, with the bloodstock agent

going to $360,000 to land the colt. Agent George Moore had to

exceed his budget to secure Hinchinbrook=s son, Lot 328, out of

Yarraman Park Stud=s draft, but was happy to continue his

pursuit of the colt on behalf of a Hong Kong client.

AHinchinbrook goes so well in Hong Kong--Beat The Clock is a

superstar sprinter--so it was an easy sell,@ he said. AThe colt is

out of an older mare, but he=s a good mover and we=re looking

forward to see what he can do. I thought he=d go for between

$250,000 and $300,000, but there were a lot of people on him. I

had $350,000 so it was a little over, but a happy result.@

The youngster is a son of Morinda (Desert King {Ire}), who has

left seven winners including the stakes performers Prix Du Sang

(Red Ransom {USA}) and Happy Hippy (Hussonet {USA}). It is

also the family of the G1 Randwick Guineas winner Kementari

(Lonhro) and the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner Sterling City

(Nadeem).

AMy client may race him here first, we=ll wait and see what

happens there. I saw the colt three times and he just grew on

me,@ said Moore, son of champion Hong Kong trainer John.

Star in Moore=s Eyes Later in the day, Moore went to $300,000 for a flashy chestnut

colt by Starcraft, Lot 471, who was offered by KBL

Thoroughbreds. He is out of the

multiple winner Sky Rubi (Testa

Rossa) and a pedigree page that

includes the multiple Group 1

winners Gurner=s Lane (NZ) (Sir

Tristram {Ire}), Purple

(Commands) and Foxwood (NZ)

(Centaine).

AThere are only two other

chestnut horses which this

horse is reminding me of,@

Moore said. AHe had the same

exact walk, the same exact

temperament and the same

good drive behind. Able Friend

was one of them and Aethero is

the other one. They are exactly the same.

AI said to Dad, >we=ve just got to buy him.= Walking around he

was very imposing and that is the sort of horse that we like. Last

time we let a Starcraft go to Hong Kong, it turned out to be a

Class 1 horse and this one gave me an even better feeling. I am

really excited about the horse, so we would have gone to

$500,000. Right now I own him with Dad.@

Harron Strikes Agent James Harron wasn=t to be denied in his chase of a

Capitalist colt, Lot 369, and signed for the Newgate

Farm-offered youngster at $340,000.

AHe=s the first foal of a good race mare and just loved his

attitude. He handled the sales beautifully and was full of quality.

He looks very precocious and I=m very pleased to get him,@ he

said.

The colt is a son of the two-time winner and stakes performer

Pearl Congenial (Gio Ponti {USA}), who hails from the family of

the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth (Dundeel {NZ}) and

the dual Listed winner Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom {USA}).

AI thought he would be around the $300,000 mark and you

always have to go one or two more for the best colts. He=s got a

lovely profile,@ Harron said. AIt=s been very solid here and I felt

sorry for Inglis with the conditions. They have done a great job,

it=s a very healthy market.@

Harron purchased Capitalist=s son for his colt=s syndicate,

which will also include Lot 11, a son of Extreme Choice bought

for $160,000 on Sunday and also a Newgate offering.

AHe=s also out of a good race mare and I=m a big fan of Extreme

Choice,@ he said.

The colt=s mother is Ben=s Duchess (USA) (Munnings {USA}),

winner of the G3 Santa Anita LA Woman S. and under the third

dam is the G1 Hollywood Derby winner Vergennes (USA)

(Dynaformer {USA}).

HKJC Swoops The standard and depth of the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale has

caught the attention of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Its

representative, Craig Rounsefell, was in attendance at the

Riverside Stables and was successful in claiming the colt he had

come for, a son of Deep Field offered by Goodwood Farm and

purchased for $260,000.

AThe quality of the catalogue in recent years has continued to

rise and it is a sale we have to look at,@ he said. AWe will be

active at Melbourne and Easter after getting blown out of the

water at Magic Millions. We picked up four in New Zealand and

two at Magic Millions.

AThis was the only colt that made it through to our final list

here. He has a lot of improvement in him and was one of the

most athletic colts we have seen this year.@

The Boomer Bloodstock principal said he was delighted to

have secured the colt for $260,000.

AHe=s out of a very fast Sydney Stakes mare and Deep Field is

one of the young up and coming sires we like. We think we

found some value and had a little petrol left in the tank.@

The colt, offered as Lot 449, is out of She=s A Stalker (Ferocity),

who won three times up to 1200 metres and was stakes placed.

AHe=ll head to Ascot Farm in New Zealand. Bruce Harvey will

break him in and do his early education before he goes to Hong

Kong for the ISG Sale,@ Rounsefell said.

Value Purchase Warwick Farm trainer Matthew Smith considered himself to be

well ahead of the game after having the final say at $210,000 for

a daughter of I Am Invincible, Lot 311, from Kitchwin Hills= draft.

AI thought she would make $300,000 so very pleased with

that. I thought she was one of the best fillies on the complex, I

really like her,@ Smith said. AThis our home turf so we try and get

a few here.@

Smith bought the filly on spec, but didn=t expect to have any

trouble finding owners.

AI=d say the I Am Invincibles would average over $200,000 and

we=ve got quite a few clients who like to race fillies so I=ll be

having a chat to them,@ he said.

The I Am Invincible youngster is out of Miss Beauty World

(God=s Own), who is a half-sister to the dual Group 3 winners

Lite=N In My Veins (Henrythenavigator {USA}) and Hi World

(High Chaparral {Ire}).
