Sent straight to the front by Elione Chaves in the Gr.3Pramms Memorial, Silver Ocean was tracked byKashbom (Refuse To Bend) and Berling (Montjeu).Entering the final bend, Hurricane Red (Hurricane Run)mounted a challenge on the rails and Giftorm (War Pass)came around the leaders, but neither could land a blow asSilver Ocean was too strong and he ran on to record athree-quarter length victory from Giftorm, with thefavourite Hurricane Red a further length back in third.

Earlier on the same card, Over The Ocean got one up onhis old rival Let’sgoforit (Verglas) in the Listed LanwadesStud Jagersro Sprint, in the colours of 360 North HorseRacing Ab. NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK

TAVISTOCK THE STAR OF DAYTWO AT KARAKA

Cambridge Stud-based stallion Tavistock was the talk ofthe second day of the annual New Zealand BloodstockNational Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed BloodstockSale at Karaka, writes Kevin Robertson.

The Gr.1 winning son of Montjeu has hit the headlinesthis season through the deeds of his three-year-old cropthat includes amongst its ranks the Gr. 1 Rosehill Guineaswinner Volkstok’n’barrell and Gr.1 South AustralianDerby runner-up Werther.

Those results helped underpin strong demand for

progeny from the stallion as he set the pace with the twotop lots of the day from the weanling section of the sale.

Demonstrating his faith in the product, CambridgeStud’s Sir Patrick Hogan went to NZ$90,000 to secure Lot216, the Tavistock filly out of the Zabeel mare All ByMyself. The bay, bred by Tavistock’s breeder, theDowager Duchess of Bedford and offered by BrighthillFarm, caught the attention of bidders, but it was SirPatrick who came out on top with the final offer.“I’ve already been beaten twice on another couple of

Tavistocks and I was determined to get this one,” he said.“She’s a lovely sort, typical of his progeny and from a verygood family.”

The filly’s dam All By Myself is out of Myself, a Group-winning descendant of Bloomsbury Stud’s blue henbroodmare Mrs Moss. This is also the family of Zabeelgelding Precedence, the durable Bart Cummings-trainedstayer raced in partnership by the Duchess, Sir Patrickand Dato Tan Chin Nam.

Hogan was determined to secure the filly after dippingout three lots earlier on a showy Tavistock colt, Lot 213out of the Lord Ballina mare Adalah, that was knockeddown to the astute Mark & Shelley Treweek for NZ$80,000.Active on the first day of the sale with three purchasesincluding another Tavistock colt for NZ$58,000, the

Lyndhurst Farm principals have their eyes set on theNational Yearling Sale in January 2016 for this youngster.“You come to these sales to buy weanlings from quality

stallions and the Tavistocks certainly fit that bill,”explained Mark Treweek. “We had several ear-markedbefore the sale and so far we’ve managed to get each onewe have wanted.“It is becoming increasingly difficult to source this sort

of horse from the Australian sales, but we know the qualityof our local product and we believe this investment will bewell rewarded when we bring them back to Karaka nextyear.”

Acknowledging there were still a handful of lots theywere keen on later in the day, it was no surprise when thecouple went to NZ$80,000 to secure Lot 327, the bay coltby Ocean Park (Thorn Park) out of the Dr Fong mareHappy Forever. The dam is a daughter of multiple Gr.1winner Happyanunoit (Yachtie), who was successful atthe elite level in both New Zealand and the United States.

First season sire Ocean Park had proven popular on thefirst day of the sale as he set the pace in the race to be theleading sire, with four lots sold at an aggregate ofNZ$158,000. With a further seven lots on day two his totalof NZ$409,500 allowed him to take out the leadingaggregate title although he was pipped by Tavistock forthe leading average.

Another freshman stallion that stood out during the salewas the Lime Country Thoroughbreds son of Encosta DeLago in Niagara. A solid result on day one was followedby an even better day two where his top priced individualwas Lot 321, a bay colt out of the Bigstone mare Granitathat was snapped up by Steve Jostlear from AmpullaLodge in Victoria for NZ$60,000.

The athletic colt is from the family of Gr.1 SpringChampion Stakes winner Sakana (Rassendyll) and therecently retired multiple Gr.1 winner Viadana (Towkay).

Jostlear was impressed by the stallion with whom hehas plenty of affinity, having raced his conqueror in theGr.2 Sandown Guineas, So Swift (Barely A Moment).“We thought Niagara was a stunning individual on the

track and ever since that day at Sandown we have taken areal interest in him,” he explained. “When the cataloguecame out we went through each of the weanlings he hadin the sale and this one was the one we marked at the topof our wish list.“We’ve had great success here in the past, having

bought a Rip Van Winkle colt last year for NZ$70,000which we on-sold for NZ$150,000 in Sydney, so hopefullywe can do the same with this guy.”

Whilst none of the foals on offer managed to top theNZ$100,000 threshold which was broken three times onday one, that honour went to racemare Dancers Tale(Tale Of The Cat), who was sold as a racing and breedingproposition. Consigned through the Curraghmore Studdraft as Lot 403, the Stakes winning daughter of theCarnegie mare Pineau fell to the bid of agent Bruce Perryfor NZ$120,000.

Perry was surprised at the price, having valued the mareconsiderably higher before the sale. “I think we got abargain there, as I had valued her much higher,” Headmitted. “I’ve bought her on behalf of a bunch of mateswho race several horses together. At this stage she willhave a few more on the track but will be served by PerIncanto in the spring.”

EFTBA HOLDS 21ST GENERALASSEMBLY AT LONGCHAMP

Under the presidency of the Syndicat des Eleveurs, delegates of 14 countries members belonging to theEuropean Federation of Thoroughbred Breeders’Associations (EFTBA) debated various topics concerningthe future of the thoroughbred breeding industry in Europelast Sunday. Important current issues included thezootechnical, DNA testing and equine identification draftregulations.

Dr Tim Morris from Political Lobbying and MediaRelations (PLMR), who has been retained by the EFTBABoard as the new lobbyist, explained his future actions infront of the delegates in order to propose a strategy inrelation with the major deadlines of the EuropeanCommission. He pointed out the importance for a verystructured group like EFTBA, which is now a recognizedinterlocutor among European decision makers in Brussels,to integrate the civil groups which are regularly questionedby European Commission officials.

Veterinary and sanitary questions are always among themain subjects for EFTBA. The sanitary commission whichis co-led by Dr Des Leadon and Tim Richardson, met theday before (9th May). Its members considered issuesrelated to the regulation to be put in place on anabolicsteroids, as well as the last epizootics which are a threatto Europe and the recent exchange with our foreignpartners.

The members unanimously adopted a resolution toadvise all thoroughbred registration authorities of theirtotal opposition to any retrospective access by thoseinvolved in DNA performance profiling to DNA samplesstored by these authorities. These samples were collectedsolely for identification and pedigree verification.Retrospective access for DNA performance profiling bycommercial companies was never envisaged at theinception of these DNA stores and no consent for this

usage was ever sought from or given by the breedingindustry.

Retrospective access to these stores for this purposehas the potential to have immediate and far reachingconsequences for the industry’s long standing system ofinvestment and valuation based on pedigree, conformation and performance.

The EFTBA Veterinary Advisory Committee warned thatthe industry has at present no mechanism to protect itfrom the potential for DNA performance profiling to resultin inadvertent selection for undesirable traits as has beenwell described in other livestock industries. TheCommittee reported that creation of a monitoring systemto deal with this inadvertent consequence is important.

EFTBA is requesting all of the relevant industry authorities, including the International Stud Book Committee, NationalStud Book authorities and registration authorities, theInternational Thoroughbred Breeders Federation, SITA andthe International Federation of Horseracing Authorities toadopt a ban urgently on retrospective access tothoroughbred DNA stores to protect the future of theworldwide breeding and racing Industry.

EFTBA will be seeking the assistance of theInternational Thoroughbred Breeders Federation infurthering these aims at the ITBF Congress thisSeptember.

Each country then presented its global situationregarding breeding and racing.

After the meeting, delegates awarded Mrs ElectraNiarchos the EFBA Award which was given in recognitionof the contribution that the Niarchos Family has made forso many years to the fame of European breeding aroundthe world.

PHILIP HOBBS LANDS FREQUENTRUNNER CHAMPIONSHIP

The Frequent Runner Championship, which rewardstrainers who run horses regularly at the four Jockey ClubRacecourses in the south west region – Cheltenham,Exeter, Warwick and Wincanton – has been won bySomerset-based trainer Philip Hobbs for the 2014/15season.

The Hobbs stable wins a hospitality box with catering atthe Festival at Cheltenham in March next year, plus atwelve-month lease of an Equi-Trek horsebox.

Hobbs, who was also leading trainer at Cheltenham(twelve wins) and Exeter (twelve wins) during the 2014/15Jump season, said: “We are always delighted to runhorses at the Jockey Club’s south west courses as theylook after us and the owners so well.“It is great to win the Frequent Runner Championship

and we look forward to having lots of runners again at thefour courses this season.”

The Championship ran from 2nd October up to and

including 12th May (excluding the Festival at Cheltenhamand hunter chases). The aim is to reward trainers who runhorses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses South West.

Hobbs finished ahead of Paul Nicholls (second) andDavid Pipe (third).

The top eight trainers on 20th February 2015, afterfixtures at Exeter and Warwick, each won an all-expensespaid table for ten at the Festival this year. The octet oftrainers were Hobbs, Nicholls, Pipe, Colin Tizzard, AlanKing, Nigel Twiston-Davies, Venetia Williams and NickyHenderson.

Points awarded after February 20 counted towards thefinal scoring at the end of the JCR south west jumpseason.

The Frequent Runner Championship was established in1992. Initially limited to races run at Cheltenham, it wasexpanded to cover all four racecourses in the Jockey ClubRacecourses South West region for the 2014/15 seasonand will continue this season.

SWEDEN EXEMPT FROM PRE-RACE SAMPLING

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced thatSweden had been added to the list of racing nationswhose runners in Britain will be treated, in terms ofsampling procedures, the same as British-trained horses. They join Ireland, France and Germany, due to key aspectsof their anti-doping policies reflecting those of the BHA.

As part of the BHA’s revised equine anti-doping policyfirst announced in June 2014, it was confirmed thatvisiting runners from Ireland, France and Germany wouldbe exempt from the requirement of being in Britain 10business days in advance of their intended race in order tobe sampled. Runners from these jurisdictions are insteadtreated akin to British runners and sampled as per theBHA’s standard testing policy.

There is currently one Swedish-trained horse entered forRoyal Ascot, Volatile (Strategic Prince), who is enteredin the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup. Having landed a Listedcontest in Dubai earlier this year, he was third in Monday’sGr.3 Prix Texanita at Maisons Laffitte.

BRITISH AND IRISH MAIDENS

DARLEY SIRES TO THE FORE OF JUVENILE ACTION

Three-year-old Covert Love (Azamour) did her best toruin her chance at the start in a median auction over tenfurlongs at Chelmsford last Wednesday evening on hersecond run, walking out of the stalls and having to bedriven along, but she was going well a furlong out and wonpretty handily in the end. A horse that was rated 85 wasabout two lengths away in third and, though CaptainNavarre (Excellent Art) probably did not run quite to that, the ambition to seek black type with the winner does notlook out of place.

Young John (Acclamation) did not get too good a starteither in a juvenile EBF maiden over five at Chester onThursday on his second start, being one of a pair

hampered by the fractious Raj To Riches (Iffraaj), and hewas taken off his feet at halfway, but the pace had beenstrong on the soft ground and he justified favouritism in thelast half furlong. He is very laid back and wants six already;he is likely to miss Royal Ascot, but he could appear insomething like the Gr.2 July Stakes if he comes on.

There is no shortage of ambition in the plans for the 96-rated Highly Toxic (Dalakhani) after the four-year-oldgelding, who showed marked improvement on hisprevious efforts when third in a Listed race last time out, took a moderate maiden over ten furlongs at Clonmel onnear-heavy ground. Trainer Pat Flynn plans to send him tothe Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, which is not always the mostthickly-populated of Gr.1 races, but it will be a very poorrenewal if this chap features. Royal Ascot is also on theagenda, presumably the Gr.2 Hardwicke Stakes.

Three-year-old Vibe Queen (Invincible Spirit) hadfinished fourth in a newcomers’ race on good to firmground at Newbury, having been slightly too far off thepace when the strong following wind blew those handyhome, and the second there had won since, but she wasonly second favourite at Chester on Friday in a fillies’maiden over seven. The soft ground probably suited herbetter and she won very well, despite carrying her head alittle awkwardly, probably through greenness still whenshe hit the front. She was perhaps favoured for onceround the tightest track in Britain by going wide, but shelooked a Stakes performer in the making.

The ground was on the dead side at Lingfield on Friday, which seemed to suit L’Ingenue (New Approach)perfectly in a maiden over nearly twelve furlongs. She wasalways handy and galloped away to win what wasprobably an ordinary race on the day by six lengths. Sheshould go on to better things and should get even further.

French Dressing (Sea The Stars) looks sure to play ona loftier stage for her owner/breeder Normandie Stud aftershe was the comfortable winner of a fillies’ maiden over tenfurlongs at Ascot on Friday evening on ground just on thesoft side of good, just having to be nudged out. She is not

entered up in Pattern contests, but black type is sure to bethe aim and, out of a Halling mare, time should be her ally.

Two-year-old Riflescope (Raven’s Pass) had shownpromise on his debut at Nottingham, running on, and hefulfilled that in taking an EBF maiden over one of thefastest five-furlong courses in the country, on the Lingfieldturf on Saturday, though the ground was on the soft side.He made all, but is bred to get further; there was talk of theListed Chesham Stakes, over as far as seven, for which hewould qualify, but an immediate target could perhaps bethe Listed Woodcote Stakes at Epsom.

Four-year-old maidens are not usually worthy of note, but SR Cartage (Sea The Stars) was third on her onlyappearance at three, her first start, and she battled hard towin a mile maiden in heavy ground at Gowran on Saturdayby the minimum verdict. She should improve, especiallyon better ground over further, and it would be no surpriseto see her try and get some black type at some stage. Oneought to note Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow), who wonthe concluding race on the card, a maiden over two miles,in facile fashion. He is a fine hurdler, the easy winner of theGr.3 County Hurdle at the National Hunt Meeting, but hecould turn out pretty useful on the level too.

The ground was heavy at Leopardstown on Sunday, which was particularly tough on two-year-olds, but Ard SanAer (High In The Air), a son of Acclamation out of a Dubawimare, showed his toughness by forging clear in the lastfurlong of an EBF auction maiden over six furlongs on hissecond start, wearing cheekpieces as he had when chasinghome stable mate Mimicking (Invincible Spirit) home at theCurragh. Slightly surprisingly considering his breeding, trainer Jim Bolger is sure he requires top of the ground, sothis was a good performance indeed and he is unlikely torun again before the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes, back over five.

Old Racing Calendars used to record, “Won easily by ahead,” but Seamie Heffernan rode Bondi Beach (Galileo)to win by an easy short head from his stable mate BantryBay (Galileo) in the final race on the card. Both colts weremaking their debuts and two other debutants were alength and a neck away in third and fourth, so only timewill tell how good the form is.

More should be heard of the winners of both divisions ofthe mile maiden for three-year-olds on tacky ground atDoncaster on Monday. Keystroke (Pivotal) came tochallenge inside the last furlong and showed courage towin by a neck on his debut and, out of a Selkirk mare, willcontinue to be suited by the terrain and time to develop.Mustaaqeem (Dynaformer) had finished second in theWood Ditton Stakes at Newmarket for debutants and heran much the same race as Keystroke. He too is a horsewho will improve with time.

Dark Angel had a decent-looking filly represent him in anEBF median auction race over five on soft ground atMusselburgh on Monday. Easton Angel only had threerivals to beat, two of them also having their first starts, so thelevel of form is difficult to assess, but she was well backedand should certainly win again. Opal Tiara (ThousandWords) had eight rivals at Wolverhampton in a fillies’ medianauction over five and, though they were probably prettymoderate, she again looked useful on her debut.

Carrington is by a top-class two-year-old in NewApproach, out of a mare by a top class two-year-old inFasliyev, but he has stamina in his pedigree and was notborn until 25th May, so he did well to have run twice by

One to Watch

Steady Pace (Dark Angel) was not that well named, thankfully for Godolphin, as he showed a pleasing turnof foot off a decent gallop in a juvenile maiden at Ascoton Saturday that should prove a fair race and was wellon top by the end. He is likely to head for the ListedNational Stakes but would get further and, if all went wellat Sandown, he looks possibly more of a type for theGr.2 Coventry Stakes than the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes, though he might get quicker with experience.

now and won the second of them last night at Chelmsford.Four of five opponents were newcomers and not stronglyfancied, so his win by three lengths after making nearly allis another that is difficult to gauge, but he is clearly noslouch and still looked green, as if there was furtherimprovement to come.

There was a proper gallop on in the EBF auction maidenover nine and a half furlongs at the sharp Killarney trackyesterday evening on soft ground and Roca Rojo(Strategic Prince) was ridden right away from the field, scoring by over seven lengths on her debut. The third, tenlengths away, was rated 72, so the winner’s mark wouldonly be about 85 on a literal reading, but she couldimprove well beyond that. She is a bit hot, so she wore ahood, and one hopes she is able to fulfil her potential.
