Brig. Gen. Milford H. ‘Beags’ Beagle Jr., Fort Jackson commander, speaks about how the installation is preventing COVID-19 during a Community Town Hall on Special Topics March 5 at the Post Theater. The town hall is meant to inform the workforce and Families how Fort Jackson plans to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and arm the community with the critical information they may need. The meeting also aimed at increasing the post’s ability to protect its workforce and Families.

Though the post has not experienced a case of COVID-19, Fort Jackson began roll-ing out a response it spent weeks planning. This plan includes disseminating accurate information and taking steps to reduce the virus’ effects on the post and its mission.

Fort Jackson has hosted community town halls; instituted new ID card proce-dures at all access points; cancelled or mod- 1 ; -plemented improved screening procedures for recruits and trainees. It is all part of the post’s three-phased approach of prevention,

The town halls were live March 5-7, but there will be virtual town halls every Thursday.

“We have to share the information ... it does none of us any good if we don’t share it,” Beagle said during the March 5 town hall.

The town halls also help control rumors.“We also want to reduce panic,” Beagle

said. One of the biggest problems the post will face is “missing information and bad information.” While bad or misleading in-

formation will spread quickly it can take time for the right information to catch up, if at all. “So information has to be right and accurate, which is why we’re doing what we are doing now.”

“We here at Fort Jackson instituted ex-treme protocols well before we were or-dered to do so,” Beagle added. “We saw it coming and didn’t need to be told what to do.”

Installation leadership cancelled the 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment’s Fam- 99 the graduation scheduled for March 12 in response to potential COVID-19 cases in communities near Fort Jackson. Advanced Individual Training may receive a pass to pick up their Soldier in the bat-talion area. Soldiers will not be able to trav-el with Family members to AIT after this week’s graduation.

“We are America’s Army and our bond with the public is trust,” Beagle said in a statement released March 9. “While these changes disrupt the plans many people have made, I believe that the Family and friends of our graduating Soldiers trust that we do not make these decisions lightly and only implement the precautions outlined as pru-dent decisions designed to protect our Army Team and further prevent opportunities to introduce or spread COVID-19 exposure.”

Every year on March 2, schools across the country participate in Read Across America Day, or the school day closest to it, to celebrate Theodor Seuss Geisel’s (Dr. Seuss) birthday as well as the joy of reading.

Taking the celebration a step further, C.C. Pinckney and Pierce Ter-race elementary schools participated in Read Across America Week, from March 2-6. The schools held many events to honor the week in-cluding book character parades, Reader’s Theatre, Author’s Tea and a Reading Prize Patrol. Families promised in Reading Prize Patrol entry forms to read at home together for a chance to win a surprise visit from the Reading Prize Patrol.

If you’re looking to upgrade your combat uniform to a spacesuit, here’s your chance.

The Army is currently searching for candidates to be its next astronaut. regardless of rank, any Soldier who is quali-

In the previous astronaut class, the service considered about 200 Soldiers who applied for the NASA Astronaut Candidate Program.

“We’re hoping for a lot more (this year),” said Lt. Col. Anne McClain, an Army astronaut who spent six months in space last year.

Those interested can apply through Military Personnel message 20-062, which outlines the applica-tion process. The deadline is March 31.

0 %3 are chosen, they will go through a , round of interviews is slated for this fall, followed by a second round next spring.

,+ + of candidates from the other services as well as civilians, will be picked by summer 2021.

Candidates will then spend about two years in basic astronaut training, which includes skills from space-walking and robotics to leadership and teamwork. After that, + ! !\ to NASA.

Maj. Frank Rubio, who was selected as a candidate in 2017, is the last Soldier to complete the training. He is cur-+ \

Col. Drew Morgan, who was selected in 2013 along with McClain, is now in space and has already conducted seven spacewalk missions in his nine-month tenure.

“We’ve been very fortunate that the Army applicants have been very successful thus far,” McClain said, “and that’s why we want to cast the net as wide as we can throughout the Army and get even more applicants.”

Soldiers, she added, have certain traits that make them valuable as astronauts.

“What the Army brings to the table, just like what Army Soldiers bring to the table wherever they go, is leadership and the ability to work in teams in arduous environments,” she said.

For those interested in applying, McClain suggests they describe their experience in detail on their resume since those

reviewing it may not have military knowledge.“What leadership training did you have, what team skills

did you have? Every Soldier in the Army has leadership skills so put that on paper,” she said.

She also suggests highlighting technical skills, whether that means a Soldier worked on Humvees or helicopters, or turned a wrench on another piece of equipment.

Soldiers should write that they’ve carried out these techni-cal skills in remote areas, which astronauts are required to do while out in space.

“Describe those things to people who are not necessarily in the Army,” she said. “I know that most Soldiers have the skills that we’re looking for and I just really encourage them to communicate that on their resume.”

If not picked this time around, Soldiers should not be dis-couraged. McClain, for instance, had to apply twice before being selected. Another astronaut in her class applied four times, she said.

“It’s easy to give up,” she said. “It’s hard to keep going, but it’s worthwhile.”

She fondly recalled the spacewalks on a recent mission. A former OH-58D Kiowa Warrior pilot, she said they reminded \ +

While out in space, she was responsible for not only her-self in a risky setting, but also her spacesuit that operates like a small spacecraft, as well as a fellow astronaut and their suit.

“Overall we had to use all of this equipment to accomplish an overarching goal as part of a bigger task at hand,” she said.

But unlike her previous helicopter missions, the view was much better up there.

“You step back and look down … and see your own feet dangling with the entire Earth behind it,” she said. “It was just a really magical moment.”

03 in the future.

“We get very, very few applicants who are warrants and NCOs,” she said. “So we really want to emphasize that branch doesn’t matter, rank doesn’t matter. We really want folks to throw their hat in the ring.”

I found something I could look forward to doing that would be good for me physically. I

“The classes are so challenging and they push you to give your very best. I make an effort to be in...class at least twice a week and it’s paying off,” she said. “Not only am I losing weight, but my shape changed. I am toner and inches are noticeably gone. It is the hardest, most rewarding thing I have done in a long time.”

(' +' '+committed,” said Natasha Williams, Biggest Loser par-ticipant, “I learned I was fooling myself and had to restart … I fell off track, but I didn’t stay down. I really want this for me and I learned that it will take time. It is an ongoing dedication to self. Realizing that put things in better focus for me. I keep learning so much from this program and I learned it is okay to take things slow.”

Soldiers and their Families take part in one of the installation’s monthly retirement ceremonies at the post the-ater. Government-employed civilians are now able to take part in retirement ceremonies.

Leader file photo

By TAYLOR MARIE SMITHFort Jackson Leader

Retirement is something many Soldiers look forward to. After 20 years or more of hard work and dedication, they are eligible to retire and re-ceive awards for their service.

Up until recently, only retiring Soldiers were allowed to participate in Fort Jackson’s retire-ment ceremony.

Now, government-employed civilians are able to partake in retirement ceremony festivities.

According to Greg Fountain, Fort Jackson’s ( -vilians attended the retirement review in Decem-ber 2019.”

, 2 5 retiring civilians to get in contact with them, so the RSO can provide the proper paperwork to submit for the ceremony.

Fort Jackson’s Post Commander, Brig. Gen. Milford Beagle, hosts the review monthly at Fort Jackson’s Post Theater. The theater is located at 3319 Jackson Blvd. Dress rehearsal is held on the last Monday of every month, and the ceremony itself is held on the last Tuesday of every month.

For those that have questions or need more in-formation, Fort Jackson Retirement Services is located at 5450 Strom Thurmond Blvd, and the phone number to reach them is 751-6715.

“Not only are we stressing the importance of reading, we are also celebrating reading with surprise home visits. Fort Jackson schools value reading, and we recognize the importance of school and home partnerships for student success,” Ammons said.

Reading Prize Patrol runs a little bit like Publishers Clearing House’s sweepstakes. Faculty members from both schools dressed up, got noise makers, and rode around with a police escort on Fort Jackson to deliver prizes to winning children and Families. The prizes were totes that contained books, reading games and even snacks, all while promoting children’s literacy.

Natasha Eagle, a sixth grader at C.C. Pinckney, said “I’m really excited that I won. I read a lot of adventure and mystery books, and poems.”

The Fort Jackson Reading Prize Patrol began in 2013 and was established as an installation “best practice” in 2015. The schools also host a Math Prize Patrol each fall.

Read Across America is a program that was estab-lished by the National Education Association in 1997. For more information about Read Across America, like calendars and book suggestions, visit their website at https://www.readacrossamerica.org/.
