CSR in India: Need for a Fresh Look
On the changing nature of CSR Earlier it was mostly giants that were in some way affecting
communities that undertook CSR as a balancing act. But now, 95% of companies in India have a CSR program that too without any prescribed formula nor any mandate and if so then only for private.
On the emerging CSR policy The Department of Public Enterprises is in the final stages of
preparing guidelines for Central Public Sector enterprises. It proposes a contribution from 0.5% to 5%. Another proposal by Salman Khrushid, the former Corporate Affairs Minister, has been for a CSR credit system.
On the role of government It is a good sign that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his
cabinet, with a Corporate Affairs team, are now engaging businesses in to taking responsibility by issuing CSR voluntary guidelines onwards 2009 to encourage businesses to formulate CSR policies and plan CSR initiatives strategically.
Areas needing Special Attention in Indian Scenario
• Training the people responsible for CSR.• The levels of transparency.• Disseminating the company’s CSR mission.• Build effective partnerships with civil society.• Educate the public.• Study ways to meet the corporation's
responsibility to its stakeholders.• Promotion of third party evaluation.• Lack of Consensus on Implementing CSR Issues.• Non-Availability of Clear CSR Guidelines.• Narrow Perception towards CSR Initiatives.• Visibility Factor.• Non-Availability of Well Organised NGO.• Need to Build Local Capacities.• Lack of Awareness Of Public In CSR Activities.
Recommendations• In order to crystal gaze the future of CSR in India
and take time bound steps to mainstream it-• address the issue of building effective bridges
amongst all important stakeholders.• the involvement of small and medium enterprises
(SMEs) in the CSR domain will be essential.• Corporate houses and NGO should actively pooling
their resources to implement best CSR practices.• companies should also actively consider their
interventions in rural areas.• Government should consider rewarding and
recognising• CSR as a subject should be made compulsory at
business schools.
Conclusion….. ….“A report says that Indian listed
companies had a combined net profit of Rs 4,37,167 crore last year. At 2 per cent, this will yield slightly less than $2 billion a year as the CSR kitty of India Inc.”
So Join Hands in Eradicating it..
