The need to act

78% of adults agree:

“I don’t think it’s enough for companies to say they are responsible, they need to prove it to me”

31% say it’s very important

“When forming a decision about buying a product or service from a particular company or organisation, how important is it that it shows a high degree of social responsibility?”

Ipsos MORI Sustainable Business Monitor August 2013

Responding to global issues

• Current rate: +2oC above C19th levels by mid C21st

• “Extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid C20th” IPCC

Carbon

• Using & disposing 1m3 water produces > 1kg CO2e

• Heating 1m3 water by electricity from STP to 90°C emits 35kg CO2e; freezing emits 63kg

• UK businesses use ~10 billion m3 water annually

Water

• UK businesses generate 40 Mt waste annually• 24% is sent to landfill• 1t mixed commercial & industrial waste = 1.8t CO2e• “The true cost of waste, in terms of wasted raw materials, energy and labour is typically around £500 per tonne” WRAP
