Functional Operation Dispensing modules apply adhesive to a substrate. Unlike two-waymodules, three-way modules recirculate unapplied adhesive back to thefeed side of the applicator pump, eliminating the need for an additional setof recirculation modules. Three-way modules have either air-open,spring-close (AOSC) or air-open, air-close (AOAC) operation. The functionaloperation of three-way modules is described in the following paragraphsand illustrations.

AOSC Modules When air is applied to an AOSC module, pneumatic pressure lifts a piston, causing the module to open so that adhesive can flow from it. When the airsupply shuts off, a spring returns the piston to the closed position, shuttingoff the flow of adhesive and recirculating the adhesive to the feed side of theapplicator pump. Figure 3 shows the flow of adhesive and air through thedifferent types of AOSC modules.

AOAC Modules AOAC modules have an air-open port and an air-close port. When air isapplied to the air-open port, pneumatic pressure actuates a piston, causingthe module to open so that adhesive can flow from it. When the air to theair-open port shuts off and the air to the air-close port is applied, the pistonreturns to the closed position, shutting off the flow of adhesive andrecirculating the adhesive to the feed side of the applicator pump. Figure 4shows the flow of adhesive and air through the different types ofAOAC modules.

Module Procedures Use these procedures to adjust CF modules or to replace any module.

Synchronizing CF200 Module Output NOTE: This procedure applies only to CF200 modules. It does not apply toEP11 or Universal modules.

On CF200 modules, a loading screw located in the top of the module can beused to fine-tune the alignment of the adhesive patterns of multi-moduleapplicators, as shown in Figure 5.

CAUTION: Do not use the loading screw to increase or decrease theamount of adhesive output (flow rate). To change the flow rate, adjust themelter pump speed.

To adjust a module loading screw:

See Figure 6. Loosen the locking nut (2) at the top of the module, turn theloading screw (1) with a screwdriver, and then tighten the locking nut. Turnthe loading screw as follows:

To decrease the length of a pattern, turn the loading screwclockwise. This shortens the length at both ends of the pattern.

To increase the length of a pattern, turn the loading screwcounterclockwise. This increases the length at both ends of thepattern.

NOTE: If the module loading screw is tightened too much, the modulewill not dispense any adhesive.

To return a loading screw to the factory setting, loosen the locking nut, turnthe screw clockwise until it bottoms out, back the screw out three full turns(counterclockwise), and tighten the locking nut.

Replacing a Module Follow this procedure to replace a module.

To remove a module: 1. To ease module removal, ensure that the adhesive in the system is

heated at least to the softening point.

2. Stop the melter and applicator pumps.

3. Shut off the module-actuating air.

4. (Spray applications only) Decrease the pattern air pressure. Leave justenough air pressure to prevent adhesive from entering the pattern airinlet on the module.

5. Relieve system pressure. Refer to the melter and metering applicatormanuals as needed.

6. Disconnect and lock out electrical power to the melter pump motor.

7. See Figure 7. Remove the two socket head screws from the front of themodule; then remove the module.

8. Remove the nozzle or die from the module.

NOTE: Nordson recommends cleaning nozzles/dies before installingthem on a new module. Refer to the the Cleaning Nozzles/Dies later inthis instruction sheet.

9. Wipe adhesive away from the adhesive ports on the applicator manifold.Take care not to wipe adhesive into any air ports.

To install a module: 1. Install the clean nozzle or die on the new module.

2. Coat the new module O-rings with O-ring lubricant and place themsecurely in their grooves on the module.

3. Apply anti-seize lubricant to the module socket-head screws.

4. Secure the new module to the applicator manifold with the socket-headscrews. Tighten the screws to 9.5 N•m (7 ft-lb).

5. Restore the system to normal operation.

6. Test-fire the applicator into a drain pan or onto a piece of cardboard toensure proper module operation.

7. For best results, check the module screw torque again after theapplicator has reached operating temperature.

Nozzle/Die Procedures Use these procedures to remove, install, and/or clean nozzles/dies.

Removing or Installing a Nozzle/Die NOTE: This procedure does not apply to EP11 snuff-back modules.

Modules have several types of nozzle and die configurations. OnUniversal modules, an adapter may be required as well. Follow thisprocedure to remove or install nozzles, dies, and/or adapters as needed. Besure to refer to the appropriate illustration for your module.

To remove a nozzle/die: 1. To ease nozzle/die removal, ensure that the adhesive in the system is

heated at least to the softening point.

6. Remove the nozzle, die, and/or adapter (if applicable) using whicheverof the procedures in Table 2 is applicable to your applicator.

Cleaning Nozzles/Dies Nozzles/dies should be cleaned weekly (or as needed) to prevent clogging.Follow this procedure to clean a nozzle/die.

1. Remove the nozzle/die. Refer to Removing or Installing a Nozzle/Dieearlier in this instruction sheet.

WARNING: Risk of explosion or fire. Use a controlled heating device, suchas a thermostatically controlled hot plate, to heat Nordson Type R fluid.Serious injury or property damage could result from uncontrolled heating ofthe fluid.

CAUTION: Risk of equipment damage. Do not use a wire brush (or a brushwith bristles harder than the nozzle/die) to clean nozzles/dies.

2. Clean the nozzle/die using one of the methods shown in Table 4. Useonly cleaning agents recommended by the adhesive supplier.

Table 4 Nozzle/Die Cleaning Methods

Cleaning Method Procedure

Nordson Type-R fluid a. Place the nozzle/die in a controlled heatingdevice containing Nordson Type-R fluidand heat it above the melting point of theadhesive.

b. Scrub the nozzle/die with a soft,non-metallic brush to remove debris.

Ultrasonic cleaner a. Use an ultrasonic cleaner filled with asolvent to clean the nozzle/die.

b. Scrub the nozzle/die with a soft,non-metallic brush to remove debris.

3. Blow air through the orifices in the nozzle/die.

4. Use the following methods to check the nozzle/die orifices forobstructions:

For straight orifices, hold the nozzle/die up to the light. Light shouldbe visible through cleared orifices.

For both straight and angled orifices, carefully use a pin-type probeto check the orifices for obstructions and/or to remove obstructionsfrom the orifices. If an orifice is clear, the probe should move easilythrough the orifice. Figure 12 illustrates the use of a pin-type probe.

5. Repeat steps 2–4 until all nozzle/die orifices are clear.
