Thank you to Chuck & Carolyn Porter, Kevin & Janet Brady and John Randazo for managing the ground operations and to Bob Cassell, Jim Dugger, Perry Reed, Jamie Swanson, Jim Efird and myself for handling the airborne portion. We also had a great event at Concord on June 1-4 when the EAA's Ford Tri-Motor came for some "retro-barnstorming" passenger hopping! Captain Colin Soucy brought the big "Ford" here on Thursday and he and Larry took turns doing the flying with (I forgot how many total flights were made over the 4 days) a near record 14 hops on Sunday! Rock Hill Chapter 961 held a BBQ on "Fathers’ Day" that was well attended. It was billed as a "Wings & Wheels and Open Hangar" event as there are quite a few nice cars (both old and new) that share hangar space with the planes at Rock Hill. Got some "Oshkosh" planning in the works and I am looking forward to attending with the Bonanza and (2) "pax" and camping gear! MORE FUNNIES - submitted by Bill Repucci The scene is set when cockpits had round dials and pilots needed flight engineers and navigators. A crusty old captain is breaking in a brand new navigator. The captain opens his briefcase, pulls out a .38 and rests it on the glare panel. He asks the navigator, "Know what this is for?" "No, sir," replies the newbie. "I use it on navigators who get us lost," explains the captain, winking at his first officer. The navigator then opens his briefcase, pulls out a .45 and sets it on his chart table. "What's THAT for?" queries the surprised captain. "Well, sir," replies the navigator, "I'll know we're lost before you will."

The National Waco Club 53rd Reunion by Bob Perkins ……..I thought I’d send you some stuff on the NWC (National Waco Club) 53rd Reunion. ………..

It takes place the 3rd week in June, and has for 53 yrs now. For a while now we have met in Mt. Vernon, Ohio at Wynkoop field. It is a private strip owned by Brian Wynkoop. It is a most excellent place for a fly-in of Wa-cos as the grass is very well kept. There was a good representation of different models of Wacos at the reunion. Waco model designation is an art in itself! Generally the number after the letters designates the design year but that isn’t universally true as the 20’s had some oddball designations and the SRE, built in 41, had no number associated with it. During the 30’s there were more Waco’s in the FAA registry than any other type of aircraft. There were 35 Waco's present, 20 open and 15 cabin ships. Among the cabin models represented: UKC (2), YKS-6, YKS-7 (3), QDC, YKC (2), YKC-S, AGC-8, EGC-8,EQC-6, ZQC-6, SRE. Open models include: Waco 9, GXE (CSO), ASO (2), YMF, CRG, QCF, RNF (2), KNF, UPF-7 (10). The reunion is 4 days long with a corn boil the first night, a fly out to the Waco Museum in Troy (birthplace of the Waco Aircraft Company) and a stop in New Carlisle where the airport owner prepares a lunch for all who fly in. Friday night has a dinner and band in the large hangar adjoining the field and Sat. night there is another dinner with an auction of Waco memorabilia, etc. with the proceeds going to the club. Planes fly almost every evening and much of the day with owners giving rides and just enjoying the grass strip.

On the last night I was very surprised to get a call from Todd Olds who was in the area and just hap-pened to drive by the air-port and see all the planes. When he saw all the Wa-cos it dawned on him that it must be the fly-in I was attending. Unfortunately I was back at the motel get-ting ready for dinner and didn’t get to meet up with him.

The picture of this young girl with the Decathlon has a neat story. Her grandfather is the owner of the plane and also a Waco Classic UPF. That is a modern reproduction of the Waco UPF7. He and his granddaughter flew in last year and she was taking flying lessons. Her grandfather is the CFI. She has just turned 16 and this trip was her long cross country flight – 300 miles from the Nashville TN area to Mt. Vernon – one way! She still had to fly back home. Her grandfather followed her up but she was by herself in the Decathlon. Neat stuff. A video of the Waco 9 flying, perhaps the oldest flying Waco in existence can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XxlWPIKduwc

International Young Eagles Day at Monroe by Chuck Porter To Pilots and Crew, Thanks to those who supported our International Young Eagles Day at Monroe last Saturday, 6.9.12. It was a relaxed and enjoyable event with all 30 kids getting a right seat at the controls. We had an excellent food concession with Ken's famous burgers and fries. The new location at Hangar #4 provided us with an exceptional venue complete with A/C office-kitchen and Men's and Women's rest rooms and a huge ramp for our aircraft right at the closest intersection to the active runway. With the pleasant weather and all we could not have expected anything better! Thanks to photographer Rick Crider/Enquirer Journal Tuesday's Enquirer-Journal had a great shot of Pres-ident Randy and his 1st time Young Eagle on the front page. The Publisher of the Monroe paper brought his young daughter and was most impressed with our event. I will attempt to get the pictures from the photographer and post them at

Dick James - his Beard, his SNJ-5, Bob Hoover, Jim Philpott and a Few Other Stories by the Editor. Photos courtesy of Dick James

Those of you who have met Dick James will know that he has a great fund of stories, some related to his car racing, some related to his commercial photography work in Detroit and California and many others to go with his flying career which started in the late 60’s with a self-designed (and very dangerous) Rogallo type hang glider. Here a few stories which span the decades. Two of Dick’s friends in California at Torrance airport were Bob Hoover and Jim Philpott who both lived in Pa-los Verdes. Dick had first come across Bob Hoover when he was on a photo shoot to provide promotional material for the North American Rockwell Aero Com-mander. Dick’s spectacular photo here was shot in Wyoming after leaving the factory at Bethany, Oklahoma to look for clouds and it is pretty obvious that they found them. Dick took this shot hanging out of a small hole in the plane’s ‘photo-door’. Unfortunately, the ride was so rough that Dick upchucked his earlier meal as he was taking the shots. Regret-tably, Dick sported a full beard at that time and after getting back to Oklahoma, Dick had to remove the debris from his beard. He also noted next morning at the ramp that the line boys were cleaning the plane and his meal had traced a graceful line over the tail. That was ab-solutely the very last day on which Dick sported a beard – never again. Some time later, Hoover and Philpott jointly persuaded Dick to buy an SNJ-5 instead of a beautifully main-tained De Havilland Chipmunk which he was planning to buy. “To Get a Proper Plane and To Make You a Better Pilot!” was the reason given. Dick’s love affair with the SNJ-5 lasted a long while but he eventually sold it. However, Dick was able to catch up with the plane last year and found it at Oshkosh.

During the mid ‘80’s, Jim and Beverly Philpott had Dick and his wife over for supper one evening at their beau-tiful house on top of Palos Verdes. The third couple that evening were the Philpott’s closest friends - Colleen and Bob Hoover whom Dick had met a few times. Dick would see Bob frequently with his yellow P-51 and his Aero Commander at Torrance. At dessert time, Philpott went to his extensive files to show Dick some illustra-tions of a few WW2 planes he had conceived (tri-cycle landing gear B-17, etc.) While Jim was out of the room, Hoover leaned over to Dick and said “Philpott’s the Pilot”. This might not mean much to some people - but it did to Hoover and certainly to Dick. Jim Philpott soloed at age 16, joined the Air Corps in 1933, flew B-25’s in combat in WW2, was a Test Pilot and then flew TWA until his retirement, 33,000 hours. In 1945 during his Test Pilot days, he had acquired Type Ratings in 121 aircraft including the P-38, P-47, FW-190, Mitsubishi Zero, B-29, C-97, ......... etc. Jim was a great friend and mentor to Dick who observes that both Philpott and Hoover had the most beautiful and charming wives you will ever meet ... Test Pilots...!

During WW2, Jim was in command of the 490th “Skull and Wings” Bombard-ment squadron in the CBI (China Bur-ma India) theater flying B-25’s in sup-port of British and American troops in Burma. Monsoon conditions were ex-treme in this area with up to 680 inch-es of rain in 5 months in some loca-tions. Dick explained that Jim laughed until he cried as he described what happened when the B-25’s were upfit-ted with multiple 50 caliber machine guns in the nose. When the Japanese saw the amount of tracers heading their way, they could not get out of the way fast enough.

One of the squadron’s primary missions in Burma was bridge busting and this prompted the following from a peeved British Army engineer officer who buttonholed an American intelligence officer "I say, old boy," com-plained the Brit. "Would you mind telling those Bridge Buster chaps of yours that we think they are doing a bloody fine job but that actually, old boy, it is making things blastedly inconvenient for us engineers. Every time our forces come to a river, they find the bridge bombed out."

“Popular Maj. James Philpott, left, wishes the best of luck to his successor as C.O. of the Skull and Wings medium bomb squad-ron, Capt. Robert McCarten. Philpott has been moved up.” - an extract from the CBI Theater newspaper, Delhi, May 20 1943:

It is difficult to keep Dick James out of biplanes. Here he is at Lake Norman Airpark a few weeks ago. “My hair done blowed off me - head.“ (He also seems to have an attraction to yellow planes - stay tuned.)

wondered, who is Bob Hoover? Bob is a living legend and prob-ably one of the best pilots alive today. Here is a video clip of his

Lycoming gets FAA Nod to Update List of Approved Fuels - submitted by Alex Becker

(This item has received very little press. Note that Lycoming now approves use of some auto gas.)

See h p://www.generalavia onnews.com/2012/04/17/lycoming-gets-faa-nod-to-update-list-of-approved-fuels/ Just weeks after Lycoming Engines announced it would seek approval to operate certain engines on ASTM D7547 UL 91 unleaded avgas, it has received FAA approval to update its listing of approved fuels. Lycoming’s newly available Service Instruction SI-1070R lists 35 engine models approved to operate on ASTM D7547 UL 91 fuel. The models are members of the 235, 290, 320, 340, 360, 435, 480 and 540 engine families. SI-1070R also specifies the lubricants to be used in conjunction with UL 91. SI-1070R is available at Lycoming.com.

“Our approval of UL 91 supports recent actions by European fuel producers and EASA that have re-sulted in progressively wider availability of unleaded aviation grade fuel supplies for light aircraft,” says Michael Kraft, Lycoming senior vice president and general manager. “We are continuously working to expand our specified fuels list. Distribution of UL 91 has provided a well-conditioned avia-tion suitable solution for engines originally designed for lower octane leaded aviation and automotive fuels.” In conjunction with Lycoming’s approval to operate certain engines on UL 91, Lycoming is entering into a collaborative program with the FAA, Shell Aviation and TOTAL to examine the long-term ef-fects of UL 91 on “purpose built” aviation engines and lubricants. This program will provide support-ing information for more extensive unleaded avgas solutions. Shell Aviation produces AeroShell lub-ricants and TOTAL is a manufacturer of ASTM D7547 UL 91 avgas. UL 91 originally entered into distribution in Europe largely to serve engines approved to operate on automotive specification fuels. European Aviation Safety Administration (EASA) Safety Information Bulletin 2011-01R1 provides aircraft level approval on the basis of engine approval. Together with EASA Safety Information Bulletin, SI-1070R immediately enables the use of UL 91 on certain Lycoming-powered aircraft produced by manufacturers, such as Cessna, Diamond, Piper, American Champion, Aviat, Maule, Tecnam, CubCrafters, Zenair, and more; certain Lycoming-powered helicopters produced by manufacturers such as Robinson, Helicopteres Guimbal and more; experimental aircraft kits manufactured by Van’s, Glasair, Lancair, Zenith, Safari, Inpaer, and others. In the United States, UL 91 will require an additional approval by the airframe manufacturer to oper-ate aircraft using that fuel. There are no known distributors of UL 91 in the United States at this time, Lycoming officials note. According to TOTAL, 18 U.K. airfields currently offer UL 91 and another three are making arrange-ments to offer the fuel. In France, the fuel is available at 10 airfields with four more preparing to offer it. Switzerland has four airfields with the fuel and plans are also in place to offer the fuel at airfields in Germany and Belgium. “UL 91 is not a replacement for 100LL, but it is a very robust aviation-suitable alternative to automo-tive gasoline at lower prices than 100LL,” Kraft says. “Lycoming remains vigorously supportive of a long-term unleaded 100LL replacement fuel which could uniformly serve the entire installed base. Distribution of UL 91 and our collaboration program represents an excellent opportunity to prime the pump for a ‘UL 100’ future.”
