George Davison. Analysis of the blood lands This shot is a medium long shot, the focus is further away that the branch closest to the camera, it is also a panning shot, there is no in particular focus but it sets the mood of the film. The picture denotes a woods, or forest, dues to the coverage of the leaves it is quite dark, the ground is damp and there are dead branches and sticks all over the place. This picture connotes fear and mystery to me, the darkness of the environment is rather gloomy and the damp just adds to this affect. Because it’s quite a dense wood we assume that there are not many people going to this wood, no public walkways, perhaps even a private woodland, this would signify a greatly isolated area which once again has connotations of gloom and danger. All noises at this point are diegetic, there is just the sound of birds.

Analysis of the blood lands

This shot is a medium long shot, the focus is further away that the branch closest to the camera, it is also a panning shot, there is no in particular focus but it sets the mood of the film.

This is a close up shot. As the camera is panning through the woods it comes to this, at first it’s out of focus but soon it becomes in focus, this creates the affect of a very spooky cold and mysterious atmosphere as we have no idea what the blood has come from but it looks fairly fresh. It shows a fair amount of detail (unfortunately hard to see as it’s a poor quality picture). The picture shows what appears to be a hand print in blood with blood all around it. At this point the audience is unaware of where this blood came from, this creates tension and suspense, at the same time it is quite dark in the woods still which is creating that gloom atmosphere. We know that whatever this blood did come from is probably going to appear soon as the camera is continuing to pan to the right. This shot suggest someone may of been murdered, or seriously injured. The blood is red which has connotations of both love and danger but quite clearly it is danger in this scenario. This shot contrasts greatly with the environment as you would never expect to see a bloody hand print in the middle of a isolated woods.

This shot is another close up, it depicts someone’s bag (looks more like a males bag than a females bag) and arsenal scarf in a remote woodland, sat by themselves, this shot is again panning and comes immediately after the one with blood, this makes the audience re think what may have happened, the woods are still quite dark but at this specific point there appears to be a small opening with fewer trees. This signifies that a man or maybe a boy is in the woods all alone. Because we already know that they are bleeding we are still curious as to what has happened to them. This shot links well to previous shots as before we dint know what the blood was from, or what was in this forest but we are now aware that it’s a human and most likely a male, the environment has stayed the same throughout the shots.

This is a medium shot as the body can be seen from about the waist up, It denotes a man in a dirty blood stained shirt, he has a bag over his head and his hands and feet are tied together. He is lying on the floor of the woodland and presumably dead or unconscious. This connotes danger, death, and fear. The audience is still unaware of how he has ended up like this but we know it was an attack of some sort, where this man was in a struggle, the rope and bag are significant as it suggests he was taken by surprise and not wanted to see what was going on, and the rope to stop him from leaving so presumably they wanted to use him for something. The fact that it is just a bag and rope suggests it not a high tech operation, you could go into most supermarkets and buy both of those items. Again the feel of the environment is quite gloomy, the camera has continued to pan across the forest up until this point where is zooms in on the bag over the man’s head and fade.

This shot of the forest floor in the dark is exactly where the head of the victim had just been lying with his head and hands tied up. Just before the screen goes completely black the man is pulled vigorously from the feet towards to left, we don’t know what took him or why but it builds up the tension. The white balance has gone down to give an even darker atmosphere. The denotation in this shot is just some leaves and a few twigs on the floor of the forest. It signifies a dangerous area. Unfortunately as a still shot this picture is fairly worthless to us, it is far more significant if you watch about two seconds before and after.
