Whether you’re reading this Playbook at a football game or flipping through it at your leisure at one of these contests, you’re probably a fan of Friday night football. If you are, count yourself in good company. It appears that high school sports fans are among the most involved and vocal of all.

More fans attend high school football and basketball events than the same sports at the college and professional levels combined, according to a survey conducted by the

National Federation of State High School Associations. During the 2009-10 school year, approximately 336 million fans attended high school regular-season and playoff games in

football and girls and boys basketball—more than two-and-a-half times the 133 million spectators who attended events in those sports at the college and professional levels.

When combining attendance at regular-season girls and boys contests, basketball and football led the way with about 170 million fans. Soccer ranked third at 24 million, followed by baseball (20 million), volleyball (17 million), softball (15.8 million), wrestling (10 million), track and field (6.6 million), ice hockey (6 million), swimming and diving (4.8 million), lacrosse (4.5 million), cross country (3 million), water polo (1.8 million), tennis (1.8 million), golf (1.3 million) and field hockey (800,000).

“This first-of-its-kind survey of attendance figures at the high school level is certainly a great sign that high school sports continue to be a big part of communities throughout our nation,” said Bob Gardner, NFHS executive director. “A ticket to a high school sporting event remains one of the best values for the entertainment dollar.”

Barbe BuccaneersDistrict 3-5A

For the first time in more 30 years, the Barbe Buccaneers will be without Jimmy Shaver on the sidelines. After 24 years serving as an assistant with Shaver, Mike Cutrera takes over the program, guaranteeing familiarity and continuity between coach and returning players. Chances are the playbook will not look a whole lot different in an offense traditionally known as highly diverse. It is the players that will look different, as Barbe returns only four starters on offense and five on defense. The Bucs ended one of the more

prolific offensive outputs in school history with a 9-3 season in 2010, bowing to state runner-up West Monroe 34-29 in a Regional’s barnburner played in Monroe. After blistering opponents for 4,893 yards and 30 touchdowns in a single season, gone is Jared Foster, a two-year starter at quarterback. If the Bucs can find a suitable replacement this fall, the sky is the limit, with a majority of the offensive returners having good hands and being able to make a play after the catch. All-District Tight End Desean Smith (Jr. 6’6 227) is already being looked at as a D-1 prospect, while receiver Trey Quinn (So. 6’1 180), who

turned heads with his acrobatic catches and speed last season, brings 2010 All-District, All-State and All-American accolades back with him this year. Tre Goodly returns for his senior year with speed, skill and experience at running back. That makes quarterback the biggest question mark for Barbe this fall. Sophomore Keenan Fontenot saw some rare action on field as freshman at a 5-A school last year, and the all-around athlete will battle junior Ryan Nolan for starting slot as the Bucs signal caller. History has shown that the Buccaneers are not shy of running a platoon quarterback system, so look for both

young QB’s to get their share of snaps. The secondary returns the most experience for the Buccaneers this year. Steven Benjamin and Callen Smith join strong safety Austin Guillory in the familiar 3-3-5 set Cutrera plans to continue against opponents again this year. The positive for the Buccaneers is that projected new starters include five seniors that have game experience and should adjust to a starting role quickly. The kicking game is up for grabs after losing two-year starter Mark Minton, but it is a role that has historically been easier to fi ll because of a strong soccer program at Barbe.

This year’s reclassification creates a seven-team district 3-5A. 2010 State Champ Acadiana is the coaches’ pick to win district, while Lafayette, Comeaux and Carencro also join the fray from the east. Southwest Louisiana is represented again by cross-river rival Sulphur, and Sam Houston ends years of speculation by joining the Bucs in the 5A ranks this year.

SPICE UP THE GAME!Good Luck Broncos!

Sam Houston BroncosDistrict 3-5A

The Sam Houston Broncos make their highly anticipated move from class 4-A to 5-A and join one of the state’s most competitive football districts. First-year Head Coach Vaughn Eggleston makes his debut with a program he knows is rich in winning tradition. He is, however, no stranger to winning ways on the gridiron, serving as an assistant at Sulphur, Jennings and Elton during their strong successful days. Eggleston says his new club

“looks forward to the opportunities that await them in not only a new district, but also a new classifi cation,” as Sam Houston joins local powers Barbe and Sulphur in the expanded district 3-5A. The past district realignment places the three Lake Area preps in a large seven-team race that also includes Carencro, Comeaux, Lafayette, as well as past state champion Acadiana. Upon fi rst glance it would appear those opportunities may come with a learning curve,

as the Broncos only return two starters on both sides of the ball. Sam Houston, however, continuously boasts one of the more physical and larger off ensive lines in Southwest Louisiana, regardless of classifi cation. That tradition continues this season with all eyes on returning starter Jacob Decker, who anchors a group that will learn on the fl y, but has the opportunity to be successful with Austin Fusilier, David Wolfe, Eric Perry and John Hill also adding some beef. experience with speedster Tanner Stewart at wide out and game-seasoned running back Tyrell Jones, a junior, and you have the makings of a balanced offensive attack. Defense was a huge part of the Broncos 7-4 season in 2010, and will be tested even more in a district that highlights strong talent at the skill positions and big playbooks. Junior Evan Campbell brings some experience as he returns at linebacker, while Eric Peterson is the lone returner to a young defensive backfield that will face teams who show a propensity of throwing the pigskin.

If the district schedule resembled a five-alarm chili, non-district doesn’t do much in offering heartburn relief. While the Broncos did schedule below 5-A for their remaining four non-district affairs, the games still add some bite. Sam Houston will start with 4-A St. Louis who has beat them out for the 4-4A title the last two seasons. Also on the card is Westlake, while though 3-A in classification, still “brings it” for the West Fork rivalry. Add in Leesville, who is starting a new winning tradition of their own at 4-A, and it is a schedule rich with opportunities.

GO TORS!

Sulphur TorsDistrict 3-5A

It should be no surprise that Sulphur Tornado head coach Harold Fusilier is worried about health of his ball club. After all, Fusilier specializes in health, teaching it at Sulphur High, even using Thrive magazine health articles as part of his classroom curriculum. But it was the health of his 2010 team that probably caused Fusilier and staff the most headaches in his first year as head man for the Tors. “If we can stay from the injuries we saw last season, I feel we have the chance to be pretty

good. But we’re not making any excuses, every team has to deal with that aspect,” said Fusilier, who hopes to maintain Sulphur’s tradition of hardnosed football. Sulphur will try to improve on a 5-6 season that saw them bounced in the first round playoffs after a 33-15 loss to Jesuit. If there was a positive to last season’s plague of injuries, it means there are several players returning with experience after being forced to play because of their fallen comrades. Senior Brice Gardiner comes back to take the reins at quarterback, while Brian Walker and Kendall Daigle bring talent at running

back. Walker broke his arm early last year and Gardiner missed spring practices because of a torn labrum. But both bring health and hope for success in 2011 when added an offensive line which returns four starters and front line continuity. Senior Holden Rogers is now healthy and brings his leadership back to the linebacker position. There is a lack of starters at the receiver, defensive front line and defensive secondary, but the Tors enjoy a number of players who have seen playing time creating positive depth. And special teams is in the good hands, or foot, of junior kicker Troy Price

whose strong leg will be counted on to score field goals and pin opponents deep in their own end. The Tornados will have their hands full with the now seven team district 3-5A which includes state power Acadiana and cross-river rival Barbe. But schedule is the least of concerns for a coach who just loves Friday nights. “I voted for a nine or 10-team district. I think every game should have district implications,” quipped Fusilier. Southwest Louisiana will see the addition of Sam Houston new to class 5-A, giving the Tors another local rival of sorts, while

continuing to schedule now 4-A Lagrange in what has become an intense game of late. But the teacher side of Fusilier doesn’t mention health or schedule when asked about the keys to a Tors above average season. “We must win the turnover battle, use the kicking game to our advantage, and protect the ball on offence to be successful,” he said.

DeRidder DragonsDistrict 4-4A

The DeRidder Dragons and Head Coach Eric Parmley are coming off of a 6-5 season in 2010 which saw the Dragons make it into the first round of the high school playoffs, where they lost to Leesville in round one. Coach Parmley is heading into his sixth season with the Dragons and will need to rebuild his defense for 2011. The Dragons lost some key players from graduation, especially on defense, including strong safety Deshavor Everett, defensive back

Rashad Robinson, and linebacker Harrison Lewis. Offensively, the Dragons will run the multiple-eye formation and will have five returning starters on offense. Quarterback Jared Holmes returns for his second season to run the Dragons offense and he will have 5’10 170 pound running back Eddie Meridith in the back field running the ball. Holmes should feel comfortable when he goes under center because also returning to the offense is 6’5 350 pound offensive lineman Danie Sweet.

Another plus for the Dragons offense is that of the returning starters, three of them are college prospects. Holmes, Meridith and Sweet are all possibly headed for the next level. On the other side of the coin, the Dragons will have to fill some major holes on defense. DeRidder only has three starters returning this season. With the loss of three key players from the 2010 season, Coach Parmley will be looking senior defensive back Hunter Lewis to step up and take a leadership role in the Dragons young

defense. Lewis will be the only senior for the Dragons defense which will have seven juniors and three sophomores. Parmley will have to make sure that his defense gets to know the 4-2-5 scheme quickly. On special teams, the Dragons lost kickoff and punt returners Deshazor Everett and Rashad Robinson. Junior Sam Ford will now take over those duties while Noah Coronel will serve as kicker and punter. The LHSAA’s redistricting of many Louisiana schools affected DeRidder. Sam Houston and Jennings are no longer in the Dragons district as

they move from 5-4A to 4-4A. DeRidder will still have Washington-Marion and St. Louis to contend with, but now also have Lagrange, Beau Chene, and Opelousas. Coach Parmley said, “We have a good number of returning offensive players. We have had a good off-season, but we need to fill some holes on defense.” The DeRidder Dragons will have to overcome a young defense and a new set of district foes to get the outcome that Coach Parmley wants out of his team.

LaGrange GatorsDistrict 4-4A

A common theme to this year’s preview is teams moving up a classification, or head coaches in their first or second seasons. The LaGrange Gators are one of two area teams actually moving down a class this year. After a two-year stint battling it out in 5A, the Gators find themselves back in district 4-4A, the third classification change in less than a decade, and they also enter 2011 with a coach who has cut his teeth the past two years in a strong 5A district while at the same time constantly improving the fortunes of his club. Jules

Sullen will be on the sidelines for his fourth season as the Gators’ headman, and brings with him a team Sullen and his staff feel should contend for the district title. Sullen is both optimistic and reserved about his 2011 club. “Our biggest unknown is how we will respond this year,” he said. “How we respond to both success and adversity will be the determining factor on how far this team can go. We have coached this group hard from the time they were freshman, and have the potential to be very good.” LaGrange will air it out a little more this

year out of multiple sets, most of the time spreading the field to optimize the speed of Jaylen James and Myrtell Hawthorn at receiver. Quarterback Joseph Spruel returns his senior year to lead, stronger and more experienced. He will rely on a big but younger offensive line to run an offense that has the potential to be highly potent. At the same time, Sullen admits that someone will have to step up at some of the skill positions, including running back, to allow ball control and avoid too many four-and-outs. Junior Nick Pitre headlines a group of backs who all bring a little something different

to the offense. The Gators sent a handful of players to the Division-1 level last season. That included iron-man Aaron Sams, now on the gridiron for McNeese, who led team in tackles in 2010. Second-team All-District selection Tirrell Wellmaler returns at strong safety to anchor an athletic defensive secondary that will frustrate teams attempting to throw it deep. Returning seniors Antonio Hagan and Jaylin Thomas bring experience at playing both the run and pass at linebacker. The Gators will play predominately out of the 4-2-5 defensive set, but have the ability to change it up and adapt

to anything that opponents may throw at them. LaGrange rejoins a district schedule that highlights familiar faces Washington-Marion and Deridder. St. Louis was still a 3-A team when the Gators were last in 4-4A, while Opelousas and Beau Chene also add a new set of game film for the Gator coaches to get accustomed with.

St. Louis SaintsDistrict 4-4A

When the numbers were crunched last spring, St. Louis Catholic found themselves number 53 on a list of 53 teams in Louisiana’s 4-A classification. It’s a statistic that means St. Louis Catholic will have the smallest enrollment of any school in their classification for the next two seasons. But while head coach Mike Johns is all about the stats, it’s one Johns knows he can’t do anything about. The Saints begin their third season in the classification this fall, having made it to the playoffs the previous two seasons after winning

back-to-back district 4-4A championships. Now, those stats are probably closer to being meaningful to Johns, who begins his 45th season coaching Southwest Louisiana preps. Twenty-one of those as a head coach, as Johns starts year number 10 with his current team. And out of twenty-one years with the head whistle around his neck, his teams have made the playoffs seventeen times. St. Louis was just a couple plays away from an upset in the Regional round of the playoffs in 2010, dropping a 20-16 heartbreaker to traditional powerhouse Neville in Monroe. It’s this kind of

number crunching that opposing coaches use to back their prediction that the Saints should be in the hunt for a third straight district title. It’s no secret that the Saints have a lot of shoes to fill, as St. Louis Catholic loses seven starters on both sides of the ball and eight players named to All-District teams in 2010. Gone from the backfield is Dillion Berlin, who takes his talents to McNeese after ripping up 2,293 yards on the ground and setting records with 30 touchdowns. The Saints are high on back Cameron Victorian who has seen some action, and will air it out some with trackster

and lone All-District returner Hunter Hodgkins at receiver. Three players will duke it out for the quarterback spot with senior Derrick Rau, and juniors J.P Crawford and Blue David battling it out this fall. But don’t be surprised to see all three at sometime this fall depending on the defense. “We have a lot of work to do but we feel with hard work we have a chance to be O.K on offense,” says Johns. Defensively the Saints lose MVP Collin Todd, who led the defense for two seasons at linebacker. The defensive front line has been hit the hardest after losing all four starters last year

to graduation, while the defensive backfield brings back the most depth in 2011.Special teams have always been a key to St. Louis Catholic’s success. All-State punter Kris Albarado is on to Hollywood after getting a free ride to Southern Cal. But place kicker Harrison Flynt showed last year he has the foot to carry on the tradition of great Saints kickers.

Washington-Marion Charging IndiansDistrict 4-4A

Washington-Marion Coach Freddie Harrison is used to getting accolades on the gridiron. Harrison showed his athletic versatility while at Westlake High, Northwestern State University, and won championship rings as a quarterback for the local Louisiana Swashbuckler indoor football team. Now the young coach enters his second year at Washington-Marion, after leading the school to a 2-8 record in district 4-4A in 2010. And while Harrison would tell you that mark is far from getting excited about, he and his team have gained tons of

respect after all Southwest Louisiana teams in their district picked the Chargin’ Indians to finish on top. Harrison’s former prep coach Max Caldererra and St. Louis Catholic head man Mike Johns have nothing but positives to say about Harrision, while other area coaches also express that the Chargin’ Indians’ playoff doldrums are about to be over. But Harrison knows where the credit lies. “A lot of people don’t realize we have some very good coaches here, with a lot of coaching experience. If we are going to be successful, it is going to be because of them,” he said. Still,

Harrison guided Ferriday to the playoffs all three years he was there, including a 10-0 run in 2007, and now, with the experience and talent coming back this year, Washington-Marion should be back to the post-season for the first time since 2007. The Chargin’ Indians bring back possibly the most starters of any of their 4-4A opponents this year. For the first time in a while Washington-Marion will dress 28 seniors to provide leadership. Ten of the defense’s 11 starters from 2010 return this year, and while there were bumps in the road and points put

on the board last year, it was a squad that seemed to put it together late in district and become very hard to score against. Experience and maturity should lend to what Harrison admits to being the greatest strength on the team. A big and game seasoned off ensive line will help lead the Chargin’ Indians one-back multi set this season. All-State/All-SWLA lineman Sanchez Pitre anchors a line that rivals some colleges. Justin Woods and Leon Guillory return as starters, while Greg Lewis and Reginald Braxton should create some holes. Harrison admits that the biggest unknown this season is who will step up into the skill positions,

especially at running back where the Chargin’ Indians lose the speedy Gereski Harmon. It will be hard to replace Harmon’s 1,878 yards and 21 touchdowns from 2010. Something Washington-Marion doesn’t have to replace is the kicking game, where they feel the leg of Ronnie Hendrix makes them as strong as they ever have been in the position.

Iowa Yellow JacketsDistrict 4-3A

The Iowa Yellow Jackets and second-year Head Coach Sean Richard will try to put a sting into the now-six team district 4-3A. To do that, Richard and his staff must find a way replace speedster Gene Pete, who seemed to find the ball in his hands every offensive snap in 2010. Iowa returns 12 lettermen, 11 of them returning starters, in a season filled with promise.

Offensive diversity is a must if the Yellow Jackets are to improve on last season’s 3-7 mark. The coaching staff replaced Pete the quarterback with Austin Theriot in 2010 to open up the offence more and keep opposing defenses guessing a little more. Richard is hopeful to see the fruits of that decision when Theriot, now a junior, returns to the gridiron this fall more mature and confident. The Yellow Jackets look to be a threat both throwing and

on the ground this season. Add Theriot’s more experienced arm with the speed of Senior wide out Mason Ceasar, a 1st team All-District selection in 2010, it could produce an air attack that will make opposing coaches lose sleep. Bring out even more aspirin if newcomer Gerald Marshall shows the talent in the backfield he has in camp. The senior transfer could be the missing link in what Richard hopes will be a balanced offense this fall.

If the Yellow Jackets are to be successful this year, it may be up to the offense to get rolling early in the year and have the defense get up to speed by district play. Iowa projects a defense that starts only three of their sixteen seniors. Free Safety Jeremy Williams will be heavily relied upon in a defensive backfield full of underclassmen. While the front line in Iowa’s 4-2-5 defensive set has the most senior leadership with Defensive End Jimmy Maple and DT Blake Vidrine. If you were to poll coaches across the state, many of them would probably give you the line that their district was “the toughest in the state.” Members of the newly formed 4-3A may

actually have a legitimate beef. The Yellow Jackets must contend with traditional foes Westlake and Crowley. The Rams are not-so-far removed from a 3A finals appearance while the Gents have a traditional strong showing. This year adds Notre Dame, ranked top in the state at 3A for a brief stint last year, and Jennings, who after two years of having the lowest school attendance in class 4A, returns to familiar territory. South Beauregard makes the move up to a higher classification in 2011. And after last season’s 10-0 dominance in the regular season, it is clear that any Friday night will be a battle against the Knights.

Jennings BulldogsDistrict 4-3A

The Jennings Bulldogs are making a move this season. Last year they were in District 5-4A but in 2011 they will play in tough 4-3A District. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association did some moving around and basically re-districted many of the teams in Southwest Louisiana. Jennings was one of them. Last year the Bulldogs were 8-2 on the regular season and 2-2 in district play. Jennings went into the playoff s but lost in a squeaker to Neville 49-43. It eliminated the Bulldogs and they fi nished the season with an 8-3 overall record. Head Coach Rusty Phelps is

heading into his 17th season as the top dog at Jennings High School but has been with the program 18 years. During his tenure so far at Jennings, Coach Phelps has taken the Bulldogs to the playoff s an impressive 17 times, which basically means every year since he has been the head coach. Off ensively, Coach Phelps likes to run the split-back veer off ense. By the looks of things, Jennings will be doing well on the off ensive side of the ball. The Bulldogs will welcome back All-State junior right guard Andrew Lamb to the off ense along with All-District honorable mention senior tight end Khris Watkins. Phelps has also

changed a couple of his players from positions they played last year to new positions this season. Senior Trey Richardson, who played wide receiver last season, will now be at running back while senior Dylan Lavergne, who is a free safety on defense, will also move to off ense and play the running back position too. “The reasons for the moves is that we must replace the entire backfi eld from a year ago that produced 2-1000 yard rushers and a Quarterback that accounted for over a 1,000 yards,” Phelps said. “We must be able to throw the ball this season and not turn the ball over too often.” Lavergne was honored with 1st team All-

District honors for his play on defense. Lavergne was also the team leader in interceptions last year with three. He plans to go to Northwestern University next year. Coach Phelps will stick with his 4-2-5 defense again this season and will have six starters returning to the team. First team All-District senior linebacker Alex Daigle will also be back on defense for the Bulldogs this year. Daigle was the Bulldogs defensive tackle leader last season with 75 solo tackles and 23 assists. Coach Phelps has several starters returning and his front six should provide a strength on the line. “We took a hit on the secondary by graduation and I will have to replace five starters. The key for our defense to be successful

is we have to contain big plays. That was a problem last year,” he said. On special teams, Phelps also gets back his punter and place kicker from a season ago in senior Zack Duhon. The Bulldogs have a whole different slew of district foes this year in Iowa, Westlake, and South Beauregard. South Beauregard KnightsDistrict 4-3A

The South Beauregard Golden Knights are one of a handful of Southwest Louisiana teams that find themselves moving up a classification in 2011. For many schools, you would assume some growing pains and a rocky transition period. That may or may not be the case for Knights, who not only move up in class, but may be joining the toughest 3-A district in the state. “We knew we were most likely moving up, and purposely scheduled Iowa and

Westlake in the past so that our kids could see 3-A competition,” said fourth-year Head Coach Shawn Demeritt. Demeritt has coached the Golden Knights to a 27-6 record his previous three seasons, including an impressive 10-0 regular season campaign last year that ended when Winnfield pulled out a first round playoff shocker. “We were a handful of plays away from winning that game,” said Demeritt, whose Knights lost on their home turf. “People probably forget that Winnfield went on to barely lose in

Quarters. But I think it gave our team confidence for the future.” South Beau will have to find a way to replace an offense that put up staggering numbers in 2010. The Knights lose three players from the 2010 squad that were responsible for 44 touchdowns, and most of the team’s 3,786 total yards. Gone are passer Jordan Johnson, receiver Trenton Dominque and a powerful force in the backfield in Dylan Fowler, who bowled his way for a 1000+ yard season and 21 touches into the end zone. the quarterback torch to talented junior Zach Brady, whose coach describes as a young QB with a good arm. Senior starter Silas Whalley will see a bulk of the touches in the backfield when the Golden Knights run predominately in the Multiple I. Ty Johnson and Pryce Fontenot will have to get open for Brady if the Knights hope to have an air attack, but also watch for senior Bryce Hebert at tight end to get his share of the action this year. Whalley, a 1st team All-District linebacker in 2010, will play iron-man football as both running back and switching to anchor the defensive backfield this year.

Hebert, also a 1st team selection from 2010, will join junior center Cody Cormier on the defensive line making at least three players who see action on both sides of the ball. The previous season defense set the bar high for the 2011 squad, who projects eight senior starters. The 2010 team allowed only 97 points and just over 2000 total yards in eleven games. The Golden Knights will need to continue their winning tradition and have similar defensive numbers to be competitive in the newly formed district 4-3A.

Longtime Westlake Rams Head Coach Max Caldarera enters his 33rd head-coaching year this season. A local coaching legend in high school football, Caldarera has racked up a 203-160 win/loss record in his career with the Rams. He has led Westlake into the playoffs 24 times and reached the state championship in 2007. Last season the Rams went 5-5 in the regular season and were an impressive 5-0 in district, which catapulted them into the playoffs. Westlake took on E.D.

White, who beat the Rams 24-13 to eliminate them from the class 3A playoff race. Going into 2011, Coach Caldarera only has four offensive starters returning to the team. The good news for Rams fans is that three of them are coming back with some great accolades. Senior All-District tailback Devin Eaglin is back for the Rams. Last season, Eaglin racked up 215 carries for 1361 yards and 19 touchdowns. Also, senior All-District honorable mention quarterback Ryan Feagin will take the snaps again this season. Last year, Feagin

threw nine touchdowns for the Rams on 118 attempts, completing 64 passes and only threw one interception. Coach Caldarera plans to run the multiple-eye back offense; his new starters will need to learn quickly for it to be effective. Defensively, the Rams are set with seven starters returning from a season ago. All District junior linebacker Latrell Martin, 2nd team All-District senior linebacker Jake Brady and All-District senior strong safety Zach Vincent will head up the 50 multiple defense

for the Rams. Ted Blanchard will be back at the free safety position. Blanchard in 2010 had three interceptions and he returned one for a touchdown. “We lost some very good seniors last year with the likes of all-state defensive player Tyler Stoddard, Gabe Spikes and Trent Toups,” Coach Caldarera said. “We have a decent amount of starters and leading the way are quarterback Ryan Feagin, tailback Devin Eaglin, offensive guard Ben Myers, strong safety Zach Vincent, offensive tackle Dane Suire and both linebackers Latrell Martin and

Jake Brady. We will be young in some areas, but we feel they will come through.” One of the biggest concerns for Coach Caldarera and the Rams is the kicking game, after losing Trey Johnson. “With the addition of Notre Dame, Jennings, and South Beauregard plus Crowley, Iowa and Westlake, this district has to be the toughest district in 3A in the state,” Caldarera said.

Leesville Wampus CatsDistrict 3-4A

The Leesville Wampus Cats lost their first two games right off the bat to start the 2010 season, but then rattled off eight straight victories to finish the regular season at 8-2 and finish atop district 3-4A. They also entered the playoffs with momentum on their side, which carried them to an impressive victory over Deridder. Unfortunately the Cats lost in the second round to Franklinton 55-14 to finish out the season at 9-3 overall. Another impressive stat for Leesville is that they scored an eye-popping 492 points

on offense in 2010, which led to the eight straight victories they had to finish last year’s season. Head Coach Jimmie Adams has been with Leesville for the past three seasons but this will be his first as the head coach. Adams will take his 20 years of experience to keep the momentum going into 2011. Speaking of 2011 and the impressive offensive output Leesville has last year, the Wampus Cats have good news on the horizon. Returning to the offense again this year is senior quarterback Zach Squyres and senior

running back Diontay Thurman. Both Squyres and Thurman were All-Districtlast season for Leesville. Coach Adams will need these players’ leadership and experience to run his veer offense this year. Also, All-Districtsenior flanker Clinton Thurman and All-Districtsenior offensive guard Jewon LeDay will be back in the offensive scheme this season. Coach Adams will look for his returning seniors to lead the 4-3 defensive scheme he plans on running this season. Unfortunately, Adams only has two returning starters on

defense. District senior line backer Jeremiah Cross and All-Districtdefensive back Marshall Smith will be the go-to guys for leadership on defense for Leesville. The good news for the Cats is that of the new starters on defense, six of them are seniors. Coach Adams will also have another new player coming in on special teams. Leesville lost Punter Jacob Chambers to graduation and will now look for Colton Honeycutt to help them win the field position battle with his punts. Even though Leesville is not in any one of

the districts of Southwest Louisiana teams this year, they still have a few on their schedule for 2011. The Wampus Cats will take on Deridder in their first game of the year on September 2 and then face Sam Houston in week two. Then they will face yet another team from Southwest Louisiana in weeks four and five against Sulphur and Washington Marion before heading into district play. The Cats will look to stay on the winning track but with tough non-district games early in their schedule it could be a hard road ahead with a young defense.

STAY

ON VICTORY

Each year, thousands of kids sustain trauma brain injuries such as concussions—and about half of these concussions occur during sports. Concussions can cause long-term problems with learning and memory. Watch your child closely after a blow to the head. Red fl ags can appear minutes or days later, which include headache, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and noise, and mood changes.

“Treating head injuries promptly is the best way to reduce long-term eff ects. Recovery requires resting physically and mentally for at least a week, and often longer,” says Brett Cascio, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon on staff at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital and medical director of Memorial’s Sports Medicine. “Your child’s doctor will use specifi c testing and other measures to help decide when it’s safe to play again. A second strike before the brain has healed could be fatal.”

Helmets provide protection in sports like football and baseball. Choose a helmet that fi ts snugly but is still comfortable. It shouldn’t move around while your child is wearing it.

Southwest Louisiana residents continue to deal with extreme heat and humidity throughout the month of September.  Physical activity in hotter weather is more dangerous for children. Because they sweat less, their body temperature can rise quickly. “Mild cases of dehydration and heat cramps can be treated with fl uid and a few hours rest. But watch for signs like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or a change in mental status,” says Brian Harrell, M.D., Family Medicine Physician at the Memorial/LSUHSC Family Medicine Center. “These symptoms may mean heat exhaustion or heat stroke. This requires emergency medical help and a doctor’s guidance on a safe return to the sport.” As a preventative measure, Dr. Harrell recommends allowing young athletes adequate access to fl uids during warm-weather workouts and/or games.  Consider reducing or canceling workouts on extremely hot, humid days if necessary.

Football is one of the most popular—if not the most popular—high school sports. Unfortunately, it’s also the leading cause of sports-related injuries. According to a report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 920,000 young people age 18 and under were treated for football-related injuries last year in hospital emergency rooms, doctors’ offi ces and clinics. Researchers with the Center for Injury Research and Policy also found a signifi cant diff erence between the types of injuries sustained by high school and college football players. “This study is important because it is the fi rst nation-wide study to compare injuries among high school and college football players, and the results refl ect what we see here in Southwest Louisiana,” says John Noble Jr., MD, orthopaedic surgeon

with Center for Orthopaedics and Team Physician with McNeese Athletics. “High school players are at higher risk of experiencing more serious injuries.” According to the study, four out of every 1,000 high school football exposures resulted in an injury, while eight out of every 1,000 collegiate football exposures resulted in an injury. Although college players were twice as likely to sustain an injury as high school players, high school players experienced more serious injuries, with a greater proportion of season-ending injuries, fractures and concussions. Dr. Noble says there are several reasons that high school players experience more serious injuries. “Younger athletes are less physically mature and have less muscle mass than older athletes. Their growth plates are incomplete, which means their bones are still growing, developing and strengthening. In addition, inexperienced athletic techniques also add to the risk of injury in high school players in many situations. Good coaching and training can help in this area.” Researchers have found that running plays were the leading cause of injury in both high school and collegiate football, and in high school they accounted for the majority of season-ending injuries and concussions. Positions with the greatest risk of injury were running backs and linebackers. Dr. Noble says these types of injuries could be reduced with additional instruction on appropriate tackling and blocking techniques as well as position-specific conditioning. “The main thing players, parents and coaches need to understand is that while football does have a high rate of injuries, injury is not inevitable and the risk can definitely be reduced,” stresses Dr. Noble. “There are many ways to reduce the number and severity of football-related injuries. For example, we typically see many ankle and knee injuries. Increased conditioning, including stretching and strength training, for these vulnerable body sites can help prevent these types of injuries.” Dr. Noble adds that another key factor parents and coaches need to remember is that high school athletes are not merely miniature versions of adult athletes. “A player shouldn’t be forced to do things he isn’t physically capable of doing. Coaches bear a prime responsibility in developing young athletes and watching for early signs of physical problems. Players also need to be encouraged to speak up when something feels wrong. They shouldn’t be told to ‘play through the pain.’ One of the best lessons a young athlete can learn is to listen to their bodies and take care of injury sooner, rather than later, when it could become more serious and put them on the sidelines for the entire season.”

The days when cheerleaders stood around just clapping and shouting are long gone. “Cheerleading today is a very demanding sport that can lead to the same types of injuries as any other strenuous athletic activity,” says Geoff rey Collins, MD, orthopaedic surgeon with Center for Orthopaedics and Team Physician for McNeese athletics. The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, which tracks sports safety nationwide, found that cheerleading accounted for two-thirds of all catastrophic injuries among female high school and college athletes, and exceeds the rates for many other high school sports. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that the number of emergency room visits to treat cheerleading injuries of any kind jumped from nearly 5000 in 1980 to over 26,000 annually in recent years. The medical journal Pediatrics also posted similar concerns about cheerleading injuries last year.

In general, most cheerleading injuries are minor strains, sprains and bruises, according to Dr. Collins. “However, these new studies show that both the total number of injuries and the frequency of severe injuries are much higher than we’d like to see for any sport.” He says most cheerleading injuries occur for some very easy-to-identify reasons: lack of conditioning, risk-taking choices, inadequate spotting, improper or unsafe equipment, and practicing or performing on non-cushioned surfaces. Dr. Collins adds that parents of cheerleaders can play a big role in helping prevent severe injuries by checking out the qualifi cations of those working with their children. “Don’t be afraid to ask about their experience, the safety measures they use, what types of stunts will be performed, who will be supervising every practice and their plan for handling any injuries that occur.” Just like any other sport, cheerleading brings with it some unavoidable risks, and no amount of prevention can eliminate the chance of injury, but Dr. Collins stresses that with the proper information and knowledge, the severity and frequency of injuries can be greatly reduced.

DeQuincy TigersDistrict 4-2A

The DeQuincy Tigers had a decent year in 2010 as far as overall record is concerned. The Tigers went 6-4 on the regular season and were 3-2 in district 4-2A, which was good enough for them to make it into the playoffs, where they lost in the first round 57-7 to Calvary. That’s where things went south for the DeQuincy Tigers. On March 29, the Associated Press reported that DeQuincy High School had to forfeit football, basketball and baseball games because of academic violations. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association said DeQuincy

self-reported that athletes competed on the football, basketball, baseball, and outdoor track and field teams without having met scholastic requirements. The LHSAA said that DeQuincy’s football team must forfeit games in which ineligible athletes competed. That included three football games. Moving forward, the Tigers are looking for a brighter 2011 season. DeQuincy’s football program will have a new football coach this season in Carl Flanagan, who comes from Sam Houston.

Compound the problems from last year and the fact that DeQuincy’s district has expanded to eight teams, and Coach Flanagan will have his hands full this year. The Tigers will look to improve on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball in 2011. Last season, the Tigers scored 363 points on their opponents, including the playoffs, while allowing 342 on defense. District play starts early for the Tigers when they hit the road in week four on September 23 to take on East Beauregard, a familiar district foe. Last year the Tigers beat the Trojans 28-21. Then

DeQuincy comes home to take on Pickering, who they also beat last year 49-24. In week six, the Tigers go into unknown territory when they take on newcomer in district 4-2A, the Lake Arthur Tigers, but hold on DeQuincy fans, because that game will start a stretch of three games where the Tigers will be playing new kids in town in district 4-2A. Week seven sees DeQuincy hosting the Kinder Yellow Jackets and then the very next week the Tigers hit the road to take on the Welsh Greyhounds. The last two weeks of the season the Tigers will take on familiar teams like Rosepine at home and

fi nish the 2011 season on the road against Vinton. The Tigers will have a short time to get prepared for district play this year. They will have to tune up their game quickly against South Beauregard, who was undefeated in the regular season in 2010 along with Iowa and Hamilton Christian before heading into a grueling seven week grudge match of district games. The Tigers look to rebound from last year and it should be interesting because the 2011 schedule is going to be a challenging one. District 4-2A is the most interesting district to watch this year.

East Beauregard TrojansDistrict 4-2A

A new era starts in 2011 for the East Beauregard Trojans with the welcoming of new Head Football Coach Randy Price. Last season, the Trojans were led by now former head coach Robert Jackson who has stayed on with the team as an assistant this year. That’s good news for all the Trojan fans out there because new Head Coach Price will have Coach Jackson there to help him with the transition plus get him up to speed on the program and the players. Coach Price is entering his first year with the team, but brings in 31 years of coaching experience to the program.

Let’s talk offense for a minute for the Trojans. Coach Price will implement the Wing T offense for 2011. East Beau lost two key players including there starting Quarterback from a season ago in Justin Rutherford and Running Back Jacob Kittrell to graduation. With that being said, the Trojans will have to fill those two key positions this season and have those players get comfortable with his offensive set. Coach Price will have 5’9 120 Lbs sophomore Quarterback Josh Fletcher starting this season under center. As for the running back position, the Trojans still have three players returning in the running back position which is good news

with the loss of the for mentioned Kittrell. Seniors Seth Shirley, Aaron Armstrong, and Dillion Messer will all start in some form at the running back position. Shirley, who was named All-District in 2010, was the Trojans leading rusher from last year racking up 202 carries for 1026 yards and 11 touchdowns. On defense, Coach Price will have his tackle leader from a season ago returning to the squad. All-District senior defensive back Tyler White returns and had 50 total tackles on defense for East Beau last season. Coach Price is changing the approach on defense this year by running a 4-2-5 set. The Trojans have 5 seniors returning

including defensive tackles Noah Barber and Marshall Cox. Linebackers Seth Shirley and Dillion Messer and defensive back Tyler White round out the seniors for the Trojans on defense. Coach Price says that the strength of this year’s team is that they have 11 returning senior starters on the club. East Beau will have a couple weaknesses though. Coach Price said, “We will have 5 to 6 two way starters and the depth is a concern.” Two-way starters means that Price thinks that he might have fi ve to six players playing both off ense and defense. Standouts on off ense include running backs Aaron Armstrong, Dillion Messer and Seth Shirley,

off ensive guard Cameron Pooler, center Beau Laborde, off ensive tackle Marshall Cox, and tight end Brody Jackson.” When asked about the standouts on the defensive side of the ball, Coach Price answered, “On defense, we have Josh Andrews, Noah Barber, Chris Barrett, and Tyler White.” District 4-2A is a really crowded district this year with DeQuincy, Kinder, Vinton, Welsh, Lake Arthur, Pickering, Rosepine all in district 4-2A along with East Beauregard. So get ready Trojan fans, this should make for an interesting 2011.

Kinder Yellow JacketsDistrict 4-2A

The Kinder Yellow Jackets and Head Football Coach Jeff Wainwright are coming off a successful season from a year ago. Kinder finished the regular season an impressive 8-2 and were undefeated in then district 5-2A. The Yellow Jackets headed into the post season on a five-game winning streak when they took on Donaldsonville. Unfortunately, Kinder lost 36-29, to be eliminated from the playoffs and end their season with an overall record of 8-3. This season Kinder, like many other teams, are moving into a different district,

which will be 4-2A this year. Coach Wainwright is heading into his ninth season as the head coach for the Yellow Jackets with a 46-37 overall record and has led the Yellow Jackets to the playoffs four times during his tenure in Kinder. Before heading to Kinder, Wainwright coached in Lake Arthur and South Cameron as an assistant to round out his 10 years of total coaching experience. Kinder is looking great on the offensive side of the ball. The Yellow Jackets will have seven starters returning for 2011 including senior first team offensive line Left Guard Chris Keyes,

Junior 1st team Running Back Marshall Harmon and 2nd season Senior Running Back Seth Langley. Coach Wainwright will implement the pro eye offense this year, the same as what he ran in 2010. Running the offense for Kinder will be returning senior quarterback Blake Trahan, who threw for 691 yards last season and 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Also good news for Kinder is that their leading rusher from a year ago, Marshall Harmon, will be in the backfield receiving the handoffs for the Yellow Jackets. Harmon rushed for 835

yards on 119 carries and 11 touchdowns last season. Defensively, the Yellow Jacket are a little lighter on returning starters this year. Kinder will only have five players coming back. The good news for Jacket fans is that four of those starters received honors in 2010. Last year’s team tackle leader, senior 1st team Linebacker Seth Langley along senior 1st team defensive lineman Chris Keyes, senior 1st team defensive back Blake Trahan and junior 2nd team defensive lineman Quillan Jones are returning and should provide the leadership skills that coach Wainwright will be looking for to help his

new starters. Kinder’s defense will run the 4-3 scheme this year, which only allowed 153 total points scored against them in 2010 including in the playoffs. Coach Wainwright said, “We lost a few key players off last year’s team. They left some big holes that we need to fill. However, we believe we have some players that have the talent and ability to replace them. They are just a little inexperienced. We do have a lot of experience on the offensive and defensive lines. We believe that this along with their work ethic and leadership on the team will be our strength.”

Lake Arthur TigersDistrict 4-2A

The Lake Arthur Tigers enter the 2011 season with an experienced head coach in Chad Lavergne, who has been with the school for 10 years. Lavergne has racked up a 49-41 overall record in his career with the Tigers and will be looking to keep the momentum going from last year, when the Tigers finished the regular season 8-2 and went 6-0 in district play. Lake Arthur made it into the first round of the playoffs but fell short, losing 28-6 to University. The Tigers finished the 2010 season at 8-3.

The Tigers will play iron-man football this season, meaning that several players will play both offense and defense, including senior running back and linebacker Trent Hargrave, who was the offensive MVP of the district and all SWLA 1st team and 2nd team all state, and experienced offensive and defensive line seniors Aaron Hebert and Jasper Martin. On offense, the Tigers will have junior quarterback Rory Guidry. Although this is his first year to start as QB for the Tigers, Coach Lavergene says that Rory is very comfortable in his role because he has played quarterback

in their system since the seventh grade. Junior running back Colbie Benoit is another returning starter for the Tigers who is a very hard runner in the veer offense that Lake Arthur will run this season. On Defense, the Tigers will have first-year player Taylor McFarlin, a junior defensive back who should give the Tigers speed they will need, according to Coach Lavergne. He also said Taylor had an impressive summer. The Tigers have senior defensive lineman Bryce Zaunbrecher also returning.

Junior Nathan Monceaux is expected to contribute heavily on all three phases-offense, defense and on special teams as a long snapper. Coach Lavergne said that his team is excited about the 2011 season. He said that the Tigers lost 10 seniors who were incredible leaders and players but he feels that they can still contend for the district title. Lavergne added, “Our off ensive line should still be solid, and we have some speed in select areas. Defensively a young line backing group will have to learn quickly. If they do, and we

believe they will, we should still be very solid on defense.” Lake Arthur is coming off of two consecutive district championships and coach Lavergne says that the group of seniors he has this season has only lost two district games in the last three years, so he believes that they should lead strongly throughout this season.

Pickering Red DevilsDistrict 4-2A

The Pickering Red Devils head into the 2011 season looking to improve on a sub .500 record from a season ago. The Red Devils finished the season 4-6 and 2-3 in district play, but after the Dequincy High School football program had to forfeit games after the season for LHSAA (Louisiana High School Athletic Association) violations, it bumped the Red Devils record up to a .500 record at 5-5. Head football coach Lane Cook heads into his second season with the Red Devils. Although this is only Cook’s second year as head coach, he has

been at Pickering for 14 years. The last time that Cook and the Red Devils have seen post-season play was in 2006. This season will see big changes in District 4-2A as it has expanded with the addition of more teams after LHSAA restructuring. Pickering will have the usual foes in East Beauregard, DeQuincy, Rosepine and Vinton, but with the addition of Kinder, Lake Arthur, and Welsh in 2011, district play will come early and often for the Red Devils, beginning in week four of the season. Offensively, things look encouraging for the Red Devils as seven starters return from a season

ago, which includes players in key skill positions. That is key for Coach Cook’s split back veer and multiple offenses to be successful. Starting off, All-District senior quarterback Zack Roberts will be back under center for Pickering, and he will have his two running backs from a season ago with him. All-District senior running back Andre Flint returns along with junior running back Josh Langston. The good news is that Roberts was Pickering’s passing leader and Flint was their rushing leader. As for defense, the Red Devils are only going to have two starters back for the 2011 season. There is some hope though, because one of the returning

starters is 2nd team All-District senior defensive back Andrew Marsalise. Joining Marsalise is senior linebacker Zach Wardlow. These two players will need to lead a defense for Pickering and help the new starters understand and learn Coach Cooks 4-3, 50, and 4-2-5 defensive schemes that he likes to run. The new starters on defense for the Red Devils are one senior, three juniors, three sophomores, and a couple freshmen. “In the 2011 season, we are looking to continue to improve from our 2010 fi nish. Our goal is to make the playoff s,” Coach Cook said. “Our strength would have to be the seven returning starters on

off ense. As with most teams, our weakness will be the amount of new starters we will have this season. Four new starters on off ense involving three on the off ensive line and nine new starters on defense. Our success will be determined greatly on how these new starters can contribute.” The success for the Pickering Red Devils season will also depend on their district play. With the addition of three more teams in District 4-2A this year, the fi ght to be on top of this district starts early in week four of the season when they host the Vinton Lions. District 4-2A will be an exciting district to watch in 2011.

Rosepine EaglesDistrict 4-2A

There is a new Eagle in town for the Rosepine football program as they welcome in new head football coach Danny Smith for his first year. Smith takes over the helm for the Eagles for last year’s head coach Johnny Cryer. Smith, however, has been with the program for the past three years as an assistant before being promoted this season. The Rosepine Eagles finished the 2010 regular season at 6-4 and made it into the

playoffs where they lost in the first round 24-21 to Episcopal, finishing the season 6-5 overall. The Eagles will have five offensive starters returning this season including All District offensive tackle Chris Brumfield, center Alex Hammond and offensive guard Derek Wolin. The Eagles plan to run the Multiple and I offensive sets. Rosepine will have a new starting quarterback this season when junior Blake Hinson takes the huddle.

The issue for Rosepine on offense are their brand-new players starting in key offensive positions in 2011. The Eagles will have a new junior quarterback, one junior and one sophomore running back, and two new wide receivers –one a sophomore and the other, a junior. On defense, the Eagles will have five returning starters including senior all district linebacker Daygan Gardner and junior defensive back Blake Hinson. Coach Smith

plans to run the 4-2-5 defense this season. On the other side of the coin, Rosepine will at least have four new senior starters on the squad with three of them playing the defensive end position. Rosepine will be in a crowded 4-2A district this season playing new teams in their district like Lake Arthur, Welsh and Kinder. Eagles fans are sure to have dates against rivals South Beauregard and Pickering circled on their calendars.

Coach Smith said that his team is young, but has experience on the offensive and defensive lines. Smith also added that his team must grow up fast in the skill positions. Smith believes for his team to be successful this season, his players will need to be unified and work together.

Vinton LionsDistrict 4-2A

There is a new regime in the western part of Calcasieu Parish, specifically at Vinton High School. The Lions welcome a new head coach this year in Tarius Davis, who takes over the program from now-quarterback coach Wendell LeJeune. Coach Davis has eight years of coaching experience, with four years at Iowa High, two years at Dequincy High and one year at Livingston High in Texas. Coach Davis will have his hands full in Vinton. The Lions have only won two games in the past two seasons. In 2009 the Lions went

winless and last year they won two games against South Cameron and East Beauregard. The Lions were 1-4 in District and finished the season at 2-8. The first good news for the new coach is that he will have eight of possible 11 starters returning back to the team on offense. Coach Davis is also changing up the offensive scheme for 2011, going from the spread offense the Lions ran last year to the multiple offensive set this season. Senior quarterback Jarrod Anderson will take over the huddle this year for the Lions,

replacing last year’s Joe Prince. Anderson will have a new tight end with sophomore Blake Trahan, while senior tailback Dillion Worthy will take the handoffs. Also, Anderson will have one returning wide receiver in senior J.P. Pickett and one new receiver in Senior Kelby Hebert. Hebert is also the Lions punter this season while Shawn Fenetz will return as Vinton’s place kicker. It’s also looking good on the defensive side of the ball for the Lions and Coach Davis. Vinton will have eight returning starters as well on defense. One thing that Coach Davis is not changing in his first year as the head coach is

the defensive scheme. The Lions defense will stay with the 4-2-5 defense for 2011, which is probably a great move seeing that the majority of the starters for the Lions are already comfortable with that defensive set. Of the eight returning starters on defense, seven are seniors, with one junior. Coach Davis will be looking to improve on stopping the run. Last season the Lions allowed 2723 rushing yards and 37 points per game. Coach Davis said, “We are excited about the upcoming season. We have had a lot of kids come out for football and we have a large and

experienced group of players returning, led by our 14 seniors who have been playing together since their sophomore year. I think this, along with our size up front on both sides of the ball, will be the strength of this team. We will need to build some depth with our young guys but overall we should put a very competitive group on the field each week.”

Welsh GreyhoundsDistrict 4-2A

The Greyhounds of Welsh had a rough 2010 season, finishing 3-7 and 2-4 in district play. The Greyhounds had two games last season that they lost by only one point. Call it an off-year because before last season, Welsh had made it into the playoffs the three previous years under head coach Robbie Gates. Gates enters his fifth season with the Greyhounds and has a 21-20 record in his career with Welsh. Gates, however, has been in Welsh for the past 12 years and has 17

years experience on the gridiron. This season, like other teams, Welsh moves to a different district after the Louisiana High School Athletic Association realigned a lot of the teams after the 2010 season. Welsh moves into a crowded 4-2A District taking on teams like East Beauregard, DeQuincy, Kinder, Vinton, Lake Arthur, Pickering and Rosepine. Eight teams in all in the new realignment will surely make it interesting on Friday nights in District 4-2A. Offensively for Welsh, they have eight returning starters, seven of them seniors.

Leading rusher sophomore Caleb Hayes, who ran for 532 yards on 81 carries, returns. Senior Jacob Kratzer, the leading receiver for the Greyhounds in 2010, is also back. He caught 10 passes for 117 yards. Senior 1st Team District Quarterback David Caraway returns as well for the Greyhounds taking the snaps and running Coach Gates multiple offensives set. The Greyhounds defense looks solid for 2011. Leading the eight starters is junior 2nd team all district linebacker Trey Goodwin. Last year, Goodwin had 65 solo tackles,

36 assists and 8 tackles for losses. Joining Goodwin is a talented group of juniors and seniors, including senior strong safety Dominic Davis; crossing over to defense are the quarterback David Caraway, who will serve as free safety for the Greyhounds. Coach Gates said, “Last year we went through some growing pains. Injuries and inexperience played a part of the season. But we were competitive and lost some close games. Experience should help us improve this year with 16 starters coming back. We feel like we have more depth this year which

will help us.” When asked about district play, Gates said “Our district is going to be tough. They are all good and every game will be a battle. The key to our success will be staying away from the injuries and winning the turnover battle.” With the new District 4-2A having eight strong teams in it, Friday nights should be exciting and the outcomes unbelievable. Get ready Greyhound fans, 2011 should be a fun year.

Basile BearcatsDistrict 5-1A

Basile High School and its football team are making the jump from 4-1A to 5-1A this year after the Louisiana High School Athletic Association shuffl ed up all the districts. But don’t worry about it, Bearcat fans – even though your team has moved to district 5-1A, so have all the teams that were in 4-1A last season with no newcomers in the mix. The Bearcats will still take on district foes like Oberlin, Elton, Merryville, Hamilton Christian, and South Cameron. Tony Bertrand is starting his sixth season as

head coach with the Bearcats, but has been with the school and the program for 17 years. Bertrand has led his tem into the playoff s four of his fi ve years as head coach. Last season the Basile Bearcats fi nished 7-3 in the regular season, fi nished third in their district, and the team also made it into the playoff s, but exited early with a loss to Central Catholic 15-14. Off ensively, Basile ran the Pro I last season and Coach Bertrand will run the same off ensive set again in 2011. The Bearcats will have fi ve returning starters, including All District senior

running back Dylan Matte and All District senior off ensive lineman Nick Cortez. Junior wide receiver Trenton Pelloquin and senior wide receiver Jacob Klumpp will also be back this season. Senior off ensive lineman Garret McClelland will be the fi nal piece of the puzzle anchoring down the off ensive line. On defense, the Bearcats will have six returning starters. Junior defensive lineman Kaleb Bergeaux, Landion Ortego, and senior defensive linemen Quinten Sonnier will be the force behind the defensive stand for the Bearcats. off ensive and play defense as well in the free safety position. Junior Trenton Pelloquin will do the same, playing the strong safety position. Rounding out the fi eld of returning players is junior strong safety Kevin Hardy. Looking at the Bearcats schedule for 2011, week nine of the season really sticks out when the Bearcats have to hit the road to take on the Oberlin Tigers, who have won the district last season and was undefeated. The district champ could be determined in this game. Last year, Basile lost to the Tigers 34-21 and will surely be looking to avenge that loss.

Coach Bertrand says, “ I think we will be okay if injuries are not an issue. We seem to have a little more depth in some areas than last season, but many of our starters are fi rst year starters.” Basile will look to win the games that they lost last season against district foes Oberlin and Elton and look to win back the district title.

Elton IndiansDistrict 5-1A

Head coach Kevin Bertrand is back at the helm for the Elton Indians, starting his second season after a very successful 2010. Bertrand took over an Elton team last year that in 2009 only won two games and was winless in district play. What a difference one year makes! The Indians of Elton High School are coming off a very successful 2010 season. Last year the Indians went 7-3 on the regular season and 3-2 in district play. The Indians finished second in district play but that record was good enough to send them into the class 1-A playoffs. Elton

breezed by Arcadia 42-6 in round one but stumbled in round number two against Oberlin losing a close one 24-22. That ended the year for Elton and the Indians finished the season at 8-4 overall. Coach Bertrand and his staff look to improve on the finish from a year ago and make his team even better and a top contender this year in 5-1A. It shouldn’t be hard because offensively the Indians are returning seven starters and some of the starters are in very key offensive areas for the Elton. Coach Bertrand will have his senior quarterback Austin Bertrand is back under center

for the Indians running his pro eye offense. Last season, Austin Bertrand passed for 1054 yards. He also is the returning punter and place kicker for the Indians on special teams too. Elton also will have their leading rusher back from a season ago returning to play. Senior running back Micah Lavan racked up 1258 rushing yards last year for the Indians. Also, the Indians will have over half of the offensive line returning as well which should really help Coach Bertrand calling plays knowing that most of his offense are already familiar with the game plan. Defensively, Elton is looking good as well.

Coach Bertrand will stick to the same defensive scheme he ran last season by running the 4-3 defense again in 2011. The Indians are returning a whopping eight starters including last years tackle leader Victor Gonzales. The senior line backer had 113 total tackles last season. In addition to Elton getting the leading defensive tackler back they also are getting top college prospect senior defensive tackle Patrick Jacobs back into the lineup. Coach Bertrand said that his team has several strengths this year. “We have great senior leadership and many of our players are 3 or 4 year

starters.” He added, “We have a big off ensive and defensive line as well which will be a big strength to our team.” It’s not all roses for Elton. Bertrand does have some concerns. He said, “We have many of our players playing both ways. We must stay healthy to be successful.” Bertrand also said that depth is a weakness for his team. Elton is pretty set for 2011 with all so many experienced players coming back. If they stay healthy this season, look for Elton to be at the top of District 5-1A.

Hamilton Christian WarriorsDistrict 5-1A

If you were to ask most class 5A coaches, they would tell you that they generally only expect seniors and juniors to see the varsity-game gridiron, but that is definitely not the case in class 1A, where sophomores, freshmen, and even some eighth-graders fill a roster, many of them playing both sides of the ball, so that a school can field a team on Friday night. That is and probably always will be the case for Hamilton Christian Academy, who gets ready for a strong district 5-1A after a 7-4 performance in 2010. The Warriors

join a good number of teams in Southwest Louisiana as their first-year coach Sam Pratt takes over as only the second head coach in school history. Hamilton Christian will definitely have to be a well-conditioned team, as nine of Pratt’s 11 projected starters are scheduled to play both offense and defense, but with great conditioning and barring injuries in key positions, Hamilton Christian should be optimistic to make a return to the 1A playoffs. Justin Griffin is slated to see action on both sides of the ball, at halfback

offensively and in the backfield defensively as well, and senior Marco Richard may have some colleges take notice of his speed and athleticism this year while Pratt and the Warriors rely on him at receiver, free safety and special teams. Trey Biddle will bring experience and senior leadership to the offensive and defensive lines, joined by underclassmen Isaiah Wheeler and Jeremiah Guillory, who will be relied upon to play iron-man style football. The biggest unknown for the coaching staff is what to do at the kicker position, but

that is not usually the biggest concern in a classification that is notorious for going for it on fourth down and attempting two-point conversions after a score. The Warriors lost three regular season games in 2010 by a total of 24 points, and are looking for similar or better success this season. The 2011 schedule may be one of Hamilton Christian’s toughest yet. The Warriors move up a class in four of their five non-district games, playing three against strong district 4-2A opponents. Lake Arthur and Kinder posted 8-2 regular

season marks in 2010, and Dequincy was 6-4. All three are projected to be tough again this season. Then there is the daunting task of the Warriors own strong district foes. Oberlin went undefeated in the regular season last year before bowing out in the 1A semi-final game, and will be a factor again. There will be key games with Elton, Merryville and South Cameron, while Basile has been selected to come out on top in the end as voted by district coaches.

Merryville PanthersDistrict 5-1A

The Merryville Panthers 2010 season didn’t go as planned. They were 1-9 last year, 1-4 in district play. The team’s only win was a 30-0 victory against district opponent South Cameron. This year, the Panthers have made a change in the head coaching position. Merryville now has Gordy Glaser at the helm. He comes to Merryville with 24 years of coaching experience. Coach Glaser worked at Deridder High School for four years and then spent 20

years at East Beauregard. Offense is the first order of business for Coach Glaser. Glaser is changing up the scheme from the power offense that Merryville ran last year to the multiple offense this season. Glaser will have five starters returning for the Panthers, including senior wide receiver Tyler Brooks. He will also have junior running back Caleb Branch and junior running back Jatlen Brandon on the offense. The Panthers will have a new quarterback this season—senior Kyle

Willis. Willis will have a relatively new offensive line and also a new tight end. Junior Corey Cantrell will start at tight end for the Panthers while Evan Sibley will play the flanker position. Coach Glaser will have five returning starters on defense this year including 1st team senior linebacker Caleb Branch. Glaser will also change the defensive set for the Panthers. Last season, Merryville ran the 4-2-5 set and this year Glaser is going with the 4-3. Also returning for the Panthers to complement Branch at

the line-backing position is junior Nick Ardoin. On the front line, the Panthers have senior defensive end Jared McMillan and senior defensive tackle Dylan Thompson rushing the passer and filling the run gaps. On special teams this season, Coach Glaser will look for senior T.J. Greer to pin their opponent’s offense back in the punting game. The Panthers will take on the likes of East Beauregard and Welsh before heading into district play. Then it

doesn’t get any easier as Merryville’s final five games are against district 5-1A opponents like Basile, Hamilton Christian, Oberlin, Elton and South Cameron. With all those teams to contend with, it should be interesting to see who comes out on top this year in district 5-1A.

Oberlin TigersDistrict 5-1A

The Oberlin Tigers and Head Coach Pat Miller had another great year in 2010. The Tigers went undefeated in the regular season going 10-0, 5-0 in District and they also made a deep run into the Class 1-A playoff s, making it all the way to the semi- fi nals. Oberlin steam-rolled over Catholic P.C. in the fi rst round of the playoff s, beating them 59-21. In the second round, the Tigers beat their Rival Elton 24-22 in a squeaker, but it was enough to advance to the third round, where they beat Central Catholic 36-14. The Tigers then found themselves in the semi-fi nal

game and just one game away from playing for the state championship but the fell short, getting blanked 20-0 by White Castle who ended up winning the Class 1-A state championship. Coming off an impressive overall record of 13-1 in 2010, the Oberlin Tigers now have moved up in districts from 4-1A to 5-1A. Coach Miller heads into his fourth season as head coach for the Tigers with an impressive 28-9 overall record. On off ense for Oberlin, this might be a rebuilding year. The Tigers are returning only four starters on off ense but the good news is that two of those players are at key positions. Junior

quarterback Mark Fontenot will be under center again and fullback Lance Frank is also returning to the off ense. Even though Coach Miller only has four returning off ensive starters, he does have a few upperclassmen that will be starting on off ense, including three juniors and two seniors. The Tigers will run the double-wing off ensive set, which is the same from their 2010 successful season. They will look to keep the off ense on a roll after racking up 5454 yards on the ground last season. The problem will be that the Tigers lost Cedric Skinner who had 315 carries for 3434 yards and an unbelievable 47 touchdowns in 2010.

Someone will need to step up and try and fi ll some big shoes. On defense, the Tigers also have four starters returning including key players like Lance Frank who fi lled his trophy case last season with 1st team All-District and All- Southwest Louisiana linebacker honors along with Desmond Antoine who was also 1st team All-District linebacker. The two other returning starters on defense are 1st team defensive end Tony Fontenot and 2nd team cornerback Markeith Guillory who are both seniors this season. Oberlin will run the 4-2-5 defensive set this season, which is the same set they ran in 2010, when they allowed only 2163 yards rushing and limited their opponents to an impressive 1283 yards

passing. Oberlin had ONE running back that ran for 3434 yards by himself. Miller will look for his defense to be the strength of his team as the head into tough games in district against Basile, Hamilton Christian Academy and their big Rival Elton who they beat last season in District play and in the 2nd round of the playoff s. In 2011, Coach Miller told us that this could be a rebuilding year for the Tigers but he did add though that he really has a good crop of young talent on the 2011 squad. Oberlin had the Superdome and the state championship in their sights in 2010 and now the Tigers will defi nitely looking to get there again this season.

South Cameron TarponsDistrict 5-1A

All smaller schools seem to have their ups and downs, but there have been a combination of unique factors facing South Cameron, as lower attendance and slow population growth continue to plague the Tarpons. They are the ill effects of being battered by two hurricanes in less than five years. Those living on the shores of the gulf have basically had to start from scratch with so many aspects of their lives, and a community that in the past boasted a proud Friday night tradition now must do the same

with football. It started with the completion of a new school building last fall. New this fall is their head coach, as Edward Cormier takes over to also give the program a fresh start. Cormier brings 40-plus years of coaching experience, a resume that includes taking St. Edmonds to the finals in 1961. Cormier will bring ideas from his duties assisting coaches at Welsh and Iowa in creating his own staff to mold a young and inexperienced group of Tarpons. Optimism is good as South Cameron gets set to battle District 5-1A this fall and try to improve on a winless 0-10

finish in 2010. Only four South Cameron seniors highlight a limited roster filled with underclassmen and inexperience. In a classification known for two-way, iron-man style football, the Tarpons’ lone potential senior leader is running back Jacob Landry. Quarterback Andrew Bonsall, a sophomore who returns at quarterback, may also split time with sophomore Alex Jones at the position, to allow Bonsall to use his skills somewhere else. The other three seniors do have game seasoned experience, as Bryce

LeBouf and Tye Fontenot will be relied upon on the front line. The Tarpons have the schedule to help give their young squad some confidence this year. While the Tarpons start with two teams a classification above them, East Beauregard and Vinton won a total of three games combined all last year. And while the slate is clear for those teams as well, based on their past performance it should not be the type of game that leave Tarpons fans or coaches with a lot of nightmares. In fact, it is most likely the district schedule that creates the most

fear for South Cameron faithful. Oberlin went 10-0 last year in route to a heart wrenching loss in the State 1A semis. And Elton, Hamilton Christian and Basile are coming off 7-3 regular season records that propelled them into the field of 32 playoff teams at the end of last year. Elton is potentially stronger again in 2011, while most 1A coaches are projecting Basile to take the district this year.

Did you know? Subspeciality certifications and fellowship training following an orthopaedic surgeon’s residency ensures additional expertise and advanced skills in a particular area of orthopaedics such as hips, hands, foot, trauma and sports medicine. Another measure of expertise is board certification which requires completion of training from an accredited medical program and passing multiple, rigid written and oral examinations to confirm their skill mastery. This specialized training, along with the latest minimally invasive techniques, offers superior surgical outcomes for bone, joint and muscle problems.

At Memorial, Medical Milestones are happening everyday. We’ve searched the nation...the world for the most highly trained experts in the field of orthopaedics & sports medicine and brought them home to you.
