Dear Friends of Jewish Family Service:

We were privileged in September to move to bigger office space (upstairs in the same building), with no

increased rent or other costs, which is more practical to better accommodate our clients and administer our

programs, with some room to grow;

In October we hosted our sixth annual and most well attended and successful Tribute Dinner yet (pgs. 4-5);

We are seeing the fruition of a new and exciting program for seniors with dementia, Music & Memory (pg. 7);

We are ever-grateful to the members of JFS’s Chai Society, going strong in 2013, its second year (pgs. 2-3);

Along with five other local Jewish organizations, JFS became a founding member of the Utah Community

Legacy Project—formalized this past year — to focus on providing a long-term source of funding for all the

organizations involved (pg. 3);

In addition, we’ve strengthened or created collaborative partnerships with:

Peace House and The People’s Health Clinic in Park City, to extend JFS’s reach to those in Summit and

Wasatch Counties, where we provide clinical assessments and on-going mental health counseling by a

bilingual JFS therapist for victims of domestic violence; as well as with Temple Har Shalom, where JFS hosts

the weekly Park City Career Network, offering networking, job skills and emotional support to those

impacted by the recession and seeking professional employment; and

The Lupus Foundation, The Diabetes Association and The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and we

are working towards continued expansion to better serve our community in providing counseling and

supportive services to people with all types of cancers and other chronic illnesses, through our

LiveWell: Cancer/Chronic Illness & Caregiver Support Program.

While we are thrilled to report these exciting developments to you, like so many in the non-profit

sector, our small social services agency is still recovering from the Great Recession. Your support is as crucial as

ever at this time when the damaged economy has significantly reduced charitable giving while at the same

time we are experiencing increased demand for our services. Without you we cannot continue to supply food

for the hungry, teach job search skills and offer emotional support to the unemployed, counsel the depressed,

offer resources and comfort to the ailing and infirm, and respite to those caring for loved ones.

We extend our deepest appreciation to our generous donors and funders, our committed staff, our

dedicated Board of Directors, and the many selfless volunteers who give their time and their talents to help us

make our community a better place. A hearty THANK YOU again to ALL who sustain Jewish Family Service and

enable us to remain an open door to those in need.

In the on-going effort to create and improve services to address needs, JFS is launching

a Music & Memory program in the Spring of 2014, the first of its kind in Utah. It is another tool

to help caregivers of people suffering from Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. It

provides personalized music playlists to engage the mind and enable these individuals to

reconnect with the world and those around them through music-triggered memories. This

program has been found to reduce agitation, increase socialization and improve mood and behavior. It is a partnership with the

non-profit Music & Memory (www.musicandmemory.org), as featured in the film "Alive Inside," the Audience Award winner for

U.S. documentary at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. JFS's Music & Memory program is unique in that it will be one of the handful

of instances in the country where this therapeutic approach will be utilized in clients' homes rather than in a nursing facility, in

furtherance of our mission of aiding independent, healthy and safe aging in the home.

Want to help? JFS needs donations of new and used iPods, iTunes gift cards, or your time as a volunteer. For further

information, please call JFS at 801.746.4334.

The day-to-day outreach, companionship and assistance our volunteers give is an invaluable

component of the support JFS is proud to provide to our clients. JFS’s caring, dedicated volunteers gave over

4,600 hours of time and service in 2013. Priceless! … But if you wanted to quantify the value of that time in dollars —

that’s worth the equivalent of over $102,000!!! (see report below)

have gone into effect in recent months and many continue to

struggle with unemployment, more people in need are finding

themselves wondering where to turn for basic necessities. We

provide food assistance to eligible individuals and families who are

The sixth annual Jewish Family Service Tribute

Dinner was held on October 27, 2013 at The Garden Place

at This is the Place Heritage Park, where JFS and the

community celebrated three "Inspiring Women" — Suzanne

Goldsmith, Joanne McGillis, and Irene Tannenbaum —

women who have inspired and influenced our community

with their philanthropic work and endless contributions of

talent, compassion and support to the many worthy causes

dearest to them. On this elegant evening we paid tribute

to these women for lifetimes of good deeds to the Jewish,

as well as general, communities in Utah. Guests heard and

honored stories as told by these amazing women, and by

the many people each of them has inspired throughout

their lives.

JFS extends a big THANK YOU to ALL who supported

the Tribute Dinner—our primary fundraising event of the

year. We are very grateful to our corporate and table

sponsors, and those who gave time and talent to help us

host our biggest crowd ever! And we were extremely

pleased that we met our $25,000 challenge grant, and our

heartfelt gratitude goes to the two generous donors of the

challenge grant who doubled the value of everyone’s

contribution towards the evening's festivities.

The event received wonderful local media coverage

from KSL Channel 5 News, The Salt Lake Tribune and The

Deseret News (visit www.jfsutah.org to see video and

articles). Below are excerpts (Courtesy of KSL News) from

Carole Mikita’s interviews with the evening’s honorees:

"Education eradicates bigotry,

intolerance and violence. So,

what could be better than that?"

– Joanne McGillis

“In our living room, a committee got together a

long time ago to talk about a shelter which didn’t exist. And as a result of that, the rest of that story

you know: we now have The Road Home.“

– Larry Goldsmith, husband of Sue Goldsmith

“I was raised by a widowed mother

and with all the love in the world.

I never knew not to give love back.“

– Irene Tannenbaum
