Inspiration
Average annual daily traffic on FDR Drive:
50,001-300,000 vehicles
Why does this matter?More traffic passing under the esplanade will greater
the effect of the experience above.

Concept
There will be many glass squares placed in the ground so traffic on FDR Drive can be seen below. A few of those squares will be colored and when one is standing on a colored square, the same color will be represented on a object in the distance.

Materials: Glass
In the design, Modeling New York, (diagram above) there are 52 glass squares placed into the esplanade. They will
measure four feet by four feet and 47 of the 52 will be placed at random to view the passing of traffic on FDR Drive
beneath. The remaining five squares will be different colors, all in which will correspond to a silhouette in the
distance.
Shown to the right, when standing on the blue glass square, you will see a person climbing the apartment building in the
distance.
The Willis Tower, (formally Sears Tower) is home to an all glass visitor attraction called “The
Ledge”, where thrill seekers can step out into the sky for a heart-pounding view, 103 stories above
the ground. The ant-like streetscape from nearly a quarter mile up would not be possible without
the engineering that went into the glass. The Ledge was constructed to bear five tons of weight
and juts out more than four feet past the building. The strength of the glass comes from laminated
glass, a multilayered sandwich of glass and clear adhesive interlayer sheet material that holds the
layers of glass together.

Master Plan
When standing on one of the five colored squares, in the distance, you will see a silhouette outlined in the same color. The silhouette is either an object or person you most likely have never seen in New York before.
When standing on the red square (shown above) you can see a silhouette of a cowboy walking on the esplanade.

The silhouettes in Modeling New York are mounted onto steel posts with a concrete base, similar to the John Finley Walkway
sign currently on the esplanade. The concrete base measures 18 inches by 18
inches wide and 8 inches tall. The steel post measures three inches by three
inches, and the height varies depending on the silhouette it is representing.

One of the 47 randomly placed glass squares to
view traffic on FDR Drive.
In the photo below, one notices the silhouette is placed to look as if they are holding the lighthouse in their hand. This could be a great scene for tourists to take photos by reenacting this pose by standing in front of or next to the silhouette. When standing on the purple glass square, one can see the silhouette, which looks like it is standing on top of the bridge, as show in the illustration to the right.
In the design, Modeling New York, the photo to the left shows the view one would see when standing on the green glass square. The palm tree will be related to and remembered by those who pass by, because of its unique placement in New York City.
