President’s Message

This GGC year is passing by so quickly! It’s April al-

ready and that means the Spring Plant Sale is right around

the corner on Saturday, April 14th. Thanks to all who are ad-

vertising the sale via flyers, word of mouth, and social me-

dia, and thanks to those who have signed up to work the

day of the Sale. If you’re not scheduled to work, why not

grab a friend, relative, or neighbor and come out and shop?

By the time you receive this newsletter, Flowercade will have come and gone. Watch

for a list of winners and photos in the May newsletter.

And speaking of winners, congratulations to the committee chairs whose

hard work and dedication brought FOURTEEN first place awards to the GGC

at the District II Convention. See page 10 for the complete list.

Be sure to sign up for the upcoming Spring Picnic and West Texas Street workday. You

can sign up for both on the website or at the April general meeting.

Dues are Due!!

We are now collecting annual dues for 2018-2019. Thank you to all

members who have already paid. For those who haven’t, the dues for

an individual membership are $30.00. A family membership is $35.00.

Although the Club prefers checks and cash for renewals, credit cards

are accepted as well. Please remember that unless you renew your

membership by June 1st, you won’t be listed in the 2018-2019 year-

book.

Among the many benefits of membership are discounts for purchases from several lo-

cal nurseries:

• Marshall Grain Co., Grapevine — stop by the membership table in the

foyer of the Convention Center to get your discount application;

• Blooming Colors, Grapevine — pick up your discount card at the

membership table in the foyer of the Convention Center; and

• Grow It Land Designs & Garden Center, Coppell — tell the Grow It

cashier that you are a member of the GGC and you’ll be given a dis-

count card.

Members also receive a FREE subscription to either Better Homes & Gardens or Mar-

tha Stewart Living magazine. (One subscription per family, please.) It is so easy

to subscribe or renew your subscription via an internet link, which will be published in the

2018-2019 yearbook. Additionally, all renewing members will receive the link via e-mail

from the GGC in September or October. To ensure that you don’t miss an issue, please

check the subscription expiration date on your BHG address label. If your subscription is

expiring prior to September 2017, please e-mail me at member-

[email protected] and I will send you the link.

So as we continue to enjoy this beautiful spring, don’t forget to mail your check — or

“spring” on over to the Membership table in the foyer of the Convention Center and pay

your dues for next year!

Door Prize Alert

Please keep GGC in mind as you are out and about this summer

because we need door prizes for next year! As you run across items that

your fellow gardeners would love to win, please consider making a

small purchase to donate to our door prize bags. Your donations are al-

ways welcome, and who knows? Maybe YOUR name will be called for

a great door prize!

Gardeners on the Go Coordinator(s) Needed

Do you like to travel? Make new friends? Learn more

about gardening? If so, then you are the perfect person to

take over as Gardeners on the Go Coordinator for next year.

Or maybe you could share the position with a GGC friend as

we have done!

We have served as coordinators for the past two years and have learned so much about

planning trips and making arrangements for small groups. We have a file full of ideas for

future trips so you won’t be starting from scratch. If you have questions about the posi-

tion, please contact one of us or Candace Kyler.

Please consider volunteering. It would be a shame to lose this program if no one steps

forward.

Ways & Means

Ways & Means will have a table at the Spring Plant Sale on April

14th, with t-shirts, hats, aprons, various tools, plant and wildlife book-

lets, visors, bird feeders, and more. Look for us also at Grapevine’s

Earth Day event on April 21st, and of course we’ll be at the April gen-

eral meeting, with new items to discover.

We will again take orders at the April general meeting for members

wanting to purchase the GGC logo windbreaker jackets.

For a comprehensive list of items, visit the “Items for Sale” page on the GGC web-

site. You can e-mail me your requests before the general meeting and I’ll have them

ready for you to pick up.

Time to Plant Summer Color at West Texas Street

Have you been warming up those gardening muscles as you

clean up and plant your flowerbeds after a long winter? Just think

of that as practice to come and work in the flowerbeds on West

Texas Street! We’ll meet on Tuesday, May 8th at 9:00 A.M. The

Committee will check out the beds beforehand to determine what

work needs to be done, but we will definitely be weeding, pruning

some shrubs, planting annual color, and possibly mulching.

Bring your work gloves and hand tools and join in on the fun! We will have a sign-up

sheet at the April general meeting BUT YOU CAN ALSO SIGN UP ONLINE RIGHT

NOW! IT IS SO EASY! SOME MEMBERS HAVE ALREADY DONE IT, AND YOU

CAN, TOO!

We’ll provide water so you stay hydrated and after our work is done, we’ll mosey on

over to Jake’s on Main Street to have some breakfast or lunch. If spring fever hasn’t hit

you yet, you are sure to catch it by then! New members are always welcome — WTS

workdays are a great way to meet people! If you have any questions, please call me. I’m in

the yearbook.

Gardeners on the Go

Myers Park, McKinney

We’ll meet at the GBG at 8:30 A.M. on

Thursday, May 10th and depart by carpool

for the Earth-Kind Demonstration Gardens

in Myers Park in McKinney. Our two-hour

docent-guided tour departs at 10:00 A.M.

After the tour, we’ll have lunch at Spoons

Café in downtown McKinney. The café

manager has agreed to take separate checks

so we won’t need to order in advance.

After lunch, we’ll explore the shops, homes, and gardens in and around the historic

downtown area and then travel to Kathy Stone’s house in Frisco for a 2:00 P.M. tour of

her gardens. Kathy recently won “Yard of the Month” from her community’s Landscape

Committee! We’ll leave Kathy’s house by 3:30 P.M. to beat the traffic home.

The cost of this trip is a nominal $3.00 donation to the Collin County Master Gardener

Association which will be collected the morning of the trip. Of course, gas money is al-

ways appreciated by our drivers. If you have not already signed up, please e-mail Anne-

marie. Please note that participation is limited and will be determined by the number of

docents available on May 10th.

Lavender Ridge Farms, Gainesville

Celebrate National Gardening Week with a trip to Lavender Ridge

Farms on Thursday, June 7th. We will carpool to Gainesville for a 10:00

A.M. tour of the farm that will include a bouquet of lavender and a glass

of lavender lemonade. Following the one-hour tour, we will have lunch

on the screened porch of the farmhouse or on the lawn under the shade

trees. Lunch will consist of a salad trio of honey lavender chicken salad,

garden salad, and dilled potato salad, a beverage, and lavender cheese-

cake for dessert.

The cost of this trip will be $26.00, which includes the tour and

lunch. And as always, we ask that you pay your driver for gas. Please

see us at the April general meeting to sign up and pay.

Scholarship News

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 2018 GGC scholarship recipi-

ents. Both are past recipients.

Ashton Bisballe attends Tarleton State University. She is the daughter of Jeff and Jen-

nifer Bisballe. Ashton’s major is Agriculture Services and Development with a teacher’s

certification. This year Ashton has done an internship at the Fort Worth Stockyards. She

has also been a supplemental instructor for an Animal Services class, preparing lessons

and worksheets to provide additional study materials for students. Ashton has been on the

Dean’s List and has been accepted to the National Honor Society of Leadership and Suc-

cess.

Joanna Lambert attends Louisiana State University. Joanna is the

daughter of Henry and Rachel Lambert. Her major is Horticultural

Science with a concentration on Plant and Soil Systems. She has

been on both the Dean’s and the President’s Honor Rolls and serves

as Vice President of the Horticultural Club. Joanna worked as “head

grower” for the recent plant sale at the University. She has also

served as an undergrad research assistant and is presently doing an

internship at Billy Heroman’s Flowerland in Baton Rouge.

We are looking forward to introducing Ashton and Joanna at our Spring Picnic where

you’ll have the opportunity to congratulate them in person and chat with them.

Celebrate the Monarch! Butterfly Flutterby, Saturday, October 20th

The 21st Annual Butterfly Flutterby will take place on Saturday, October 20th. As in past

years, many volunteers are needed to make this event a success.

The event kicks off at 10:00 A.M. with a costume

parade down Main Street, ending at the Grapevine

Botanical Gardens. The day’s events include three

Monarch Butterfly releases along with face painting,

arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt, and a science area

coordinated by GGC member Dinah Chancellor. GGC

member Gloria Land will be selling butterfly-related

items prior to the parade and in a booth at the Grape-

vine Botanical Gardens. GGC member Terry Curcio

will be chairing the Art Contest again this year.

Because there is only one general meeting in the fall before Butterfly Flutterby takes

place, we need to begin signing up volunteers NOW. There are two shifts, 9:30 - 11:30

A.M. and 11:30 A.M. - 2:30 P.M., and many of the jobs are seated, with little to no walk-

ing. Some areas of need for this year’s event are as follows: an Arts and Crafts chair-

man, volunteers to check in people as they arrive for their shifts, and volunteers to cut wa-

termelons for our watermelon sticks. Note to new members: volunteering for Butterfly

Flutterby is a great way to meet other GGC members!

Thank you, and please do not hesitate to contact us should you have questions.

The GGC and the Grapevine Historical Society Connection

The GGC has a lengthy history with the Grapevine Histor-

ical Society (“GVHS”) and on a recent visit to the Grapevine

Historical Museum, it was exciting to see that the revolving

exhibit at the museum mentioned that connection. The exhibit

is focused on the Cotton Belt Depot which includes a little

GGC history and photos with the dateline 1972: The Cotton

Belt closes the Grapevine depot for business. The Grapevine

Garden members step forward to save it from destruction and

ultimately the Historical Society is formed. The depot serves

as the first Historical Museum and its relocated in Heritage

Park on Ball Street. (The Grapevine Botanical Gardens is lo-

cated at Heritage Park, and the depot museum was located at

the north end of Heritage Park.)

According to the GVHS website, its first project was to save the Cotton Belt Depot.

The railroad had served notice that it had no further use for the depot and intended to de-

molish it. In order to save it, some of the members of the Grapevine Garden Club, led by

then-GGC President Alberta Nettleton, organized the GVHS to take charge of the depot

and move it off the railroad land. In a tribute to Alberta Nettleton, Jan Roberson wrote,

“She mobilized the Grapevine Garden Club and City leaders to move the Depot to Herit-

age and Wall Streets. During this process she realized that the long term management of

the Depot should be done by a historical group.” It is worth visiting the GVHS website to

read this tribute of the GVHS founder and how Alberta’s idea of fall festival fundraising

to support the museum evolved into a fall festival which eventually became an annual

event – Grapefest.

The museum is currently located in the Ted R. Ware

Plaza Settlement to City museum complex and housed

in the Grapevine Ice Company Building at 206 West

Hudgins street, just off Main Street in Grapevine. The

museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 A.M.

to 4:00 P.M. and Sunday from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00

P.M. If you visit, expect to see some familiar faces as

numerous GGC members serve as museum docents

and Carolyn Ernst serves as Co-Collections Manager.
